Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If God is holy, then He can’t sin. If God can’t sin, then He can’t sin against you. If He can’t sin against you, shouldn’t that make Him the most trustworthy being there is? Bestselling author Jackie Hill Perry, in her much anticipated follow-up to Gay Girl, Good God, helps us find the reason we don’t trust God— we misunderstand His holiness. In Holier Than Thou, Jackie walks us through Scripture, shaking the dust off of “holy” as we’ve come to know it and revealing it for what it really is: good news. In these pages, we will see that God is not like us. He is different. He is holy. And that’s exactly what makes Him trustworthy. As it turns out, God being “holier than thou” is actually the best news in the world, and it’s the key to trusting Him.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holy Hill: Its History Authentic, Legendary and Pre-Historic, in Prose and Poetry In preparing this little volume for its readers the author has labored to give a correct and reliable description, and at the same time, a concise and authentic history of what is locally and popularly known in the eastern portion of Wisconsin as Holy Hill. Though but a small spot within the great universe (only forty acres) yet it has a name and a notoriety of no small importance. It seems to be one of earths favored precincts; one which the bountiful hand of nature has profusely decorated with rare and charming rural scenery; a retreat for the weary; a spot divinely blest, the hallowed name and romantic beauties of which are destined to endure to the uttermost limits of time. All that pertains to the hill, geographically, has been gathered by careful research, observation and personal survey, while the distances and altitudes given are from actual measurements taken under the personal supervision of the writer. That portion which relates to its earliest known history, and down to the present time, has been transcribed from well authenticated records, and the whole compiled by one who, for the past forty years, has dwelt approximately within the shadow of the hill. Whatever is traditional, or merely hear-say, is treated under such especial headings, that none may confound the things that are real, or facts, with those that may admit of contradiction and dispute. Pertaining to such are the pre-historic and traditional history of the hill. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Trinity can be understood as a social community with members speaking and listening to one another in love, or, as Luther understood the Trinity, as conversation, then God's mission essentially involves in mission-in-dialogue. Byungohk Lee contends the church has to embrace the dialogical dimension in missional terms because the triune God is the subject of mission. The missional church conversation has taken it for granted that local churches should speak and listen to their neighbors. In contrast, for many churches in Asia, including Korea, mission has generally tended to be practiced in a monological, rather than dialogical, manner. The neighbor has not been regarded as a conversational partner of the church, but only as the object for its mission. In Listening to the Neighbor Lee shows that some local churches have participated in God's mission by listening to their neighbors. He argues that listening is not a technique, but a multifaceted learning process in missional terms. The church must nurture its hearts, eyes, and ears in order to listen to the sigh of its neighbors.

Book A Church Built on the Rock

Download or read book A Church Built on the Rock written by Ken Riedl and published by Ken Riedl. This book was released on 2003-04-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 150-Year History of St. Henry's Catholic Church, Watertown,Wisconsin. 1853-2003. The only previous history of St. Henry’s Catholic Church of Watertown was written in German in 1903, at the time of the 50th anniversary of the congregation. One hundred years later, a new and comprehensive history of the congregation has been written to coincide with the 150th anniversary of St. Henry’s. The product of over two years of research, this updated history documents and adds perspective to the significant achievement of the one and one-half centuries of the church itself and also of the faith and devotion of its members over the years. Making lighthearted use of names of books of the Bible to organize the content of this history, the author covers all aspects of the history of St. Henry’s: the church, school, parish center, rectory, and cemetery; the societies and organizations; the varied religious services; the few absolute commands of Christ and the many rules of the Church; the devotions that nurtured one’s religious life and also the events that tested one’s faith. Particular emphasis is placed on the early decades of the 150 year history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning journalist’s dramatic account of a shooting that shook a community to its core, with important implications for the future On the last evening of summer in 2013, five shots rang out in a part of northeast Denver known as the Holly. Long a destination for African American families fleeing the Jim Crow South, the area had become an “invisible city” within a historically white metropolis. While shootings there weren’t uncommon, the identity of the shooter that night came as a shock. Terrance Roberts was a revered anti-gang activist. His attempts to bring peace to his community had won the accolades of both his neighbors and the state’s most important power brokers. Why had he just fired a gun? In The Holly, the award-winning Denver-based journalist Julian Rubinstein reconstructs the events that left a local gang member paralyzed and Roberts facing the possibility of life in prison. Much more than a crime story, The Holly is a multigenerational saga of race and politics that runs from the civil rights movement to Black Lives Matter. With a cast that includes billionaires, elected officials, cops, developers, and street kids, the book explores the porous boundaries between a city’s elites and its most disadvantaged citizens. It also probes the fraught relationships between police, confidential informants, activists, gang members, and ex–gang members as they struggle to put their pasts behind them. In The Holly, we see how well-intentioned efforts to curb violence and improve neighborhoods can go badly awry, and we track the interactions of law enforcement with gang members who conceive of themselves as defenders of a neighborhood. When Roberts goes on trial, the city’s fault lines are fully exposed. In a time of national reckoning over race, policing, and the uses and abuses of power, Rubinstein offers a dramatic and humane illumination of what’s at stake.
