Book excerpt: 'In the Gardens of God' is a unique collection of poetry which symbolizes the return of the poet to the source of all creation. Despite the harsh influences of the physical reality the poet excels owing to his devotion to the love of life. Furthermore, the poet managed to overcome temptation owing to the gift of poetry. His realization of the truth was the ray of the new dawn for mankind. This collection is a mirror of the ordeal in which the poet was pressed down to the extreme point of madness. He had to choose between the world of man and the world of God; A choice which was bound to either lead the poet to self destruction or to lead posterity to salvation. Freedom of the human spirit or the demise it occupied the poet's inner world. To conform to the world of man would mean spiritual death whereas to return to God would mean an everlasting life for the human spirit.

Book excerpt: ÊMore than three hundred years ago a little sailing vessel set out from Holland, crossed the Atlantic Ocean, and followed down our coast from Greenland. Its captain, Henry Hudson, was in search of a quick and easy route to Asia, and when he entered the mouth of the river that is named for him, he hoped that he had found a strait leading to the Asiatic coast. He was disappointed in this, but the Indians welcomed him, the mountains were rich in forests, and the ground was fertile. "It is the most beautiful land in all the world," declared the enthusiastic navigator. Henry Hudson was an Englishman, but he sailed in the employ of the Dutch East India Company, and soon the flag of this Company was well known along the Hudson River. It was the old flag of Holland, three horizontal stripes, of orange, white, and blue, with the initials of the Company on the white stripe. Hudson had not found a new route to Asia, but he had opened the way for the fur-trade. In a few years the Dutch had established trading-posts as far north as Albany. They had also founded a city which we call "New York," but which they named "New Amsterdam." So it was that in 1609 the Dutch flag first came to the New World. Nearly thirty years after the voyage of Henry Hudson, a company of Swedes made a settlement on the Delaware River. This had been planned by the great Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden. "That colony will be the jewel of my kingdom," he said; but the "Lion of the North" was slain in battle, and his twelve-year-old daughter Christina had become queen. That is why the loyal Swedes named their little fortification Fort Christiana, and over it they raised the flag of their country, a blue banner with a yellow cross. In course of time the Swedes were overpowered by the Dutch, and then the Dutch by the English; so that before many years had passed, the only flag that floated over the "Old Thirteen" colonies was that of England. This was brought across the sea by the settlers of our first English colony, Jamestown, in Virginia. Moreover, they had the honor of sailing away from England in all the glories of a brand-new flag made in a brand-new design. The flag of England had been white with a red upright cross known as "St. George's Cross"; but a new king, James I, had come to the throne, and the flag as well as many other things had met with a change. James was King of Scotland by birth, and the Scotch flag was blue with the white diagonal cross of St. Andrew. When James became King of England, he united the two flags by placing on a blue background the upright cross of St. George over the diagonal cross of St. Andrew; and he was so well pleased with the result that he commanded every English vessel to bear in its maintop this flag, "joined together according to the form made by our own heralds," the King declared with satisfaction. It was the custom at that time to call "ancient" whatever was not perfectly new, and therefore the flag used before James became king was spoken of as the "ancient flag," while the new one became the "King's Flag" or the "Union Jack." This change was made in the very year when the grant for Virginia was obtained, and therefore the little company of settlers probably sailed for America with the "King's Flag" in the maintop and the "ancient flag" in the foretop.

Book excerpt: This book and my research is about uncovering the many, many injustices of the American government and the American people against black people over the last five hundred years in America. I will show and also prove the absolute diabolism being applied throughout history against the masses of black people to keep us in a submissive role in this American society. Through history, I have assembled undisputed facts of this American conspiracy to destroy black people as America present their version of black people. As black people aEUR" not African Americans, but black people aEUR" we have the right to be our own selves. We have the right to choose for ourselves. We have a right to reject the lies and atrocities that America tells and have committedaEUR"and are still committing. We have the right to have the true history, not this distorted American history. It is our right to be free of everything America does; we have nothing to gain. I'm telling the truth that the majority of civilization is trying to hide but can no longer hide. Read, everyone, this is the absolute truth.

Download or read book The Historian s Red Badge of Courage written by Paul A. Cimbala and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-07-08 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For someone who did not actually fight in the American Civil War, Stephen Crane was extraordinarily accurate in his description of the psychological tension experienced by a youthful soldier grappling with his desire to act heroically, his fears, and redemption. Stephen Crane's novel The Red Badge of Courage provides an extraordinary take on the battlefield experiences of a young soldier coming of age under extreme circumstances. His writing took place a generation after the war's conclusion, at a time when the entire nation was coming to grips with the meaning of the Civil War. It was during this time in the late 19th century that the battle over the memory of the war was taking place. This new, annotated edition of the novel is designed to guide readers through references made through Crane's characters and how they reflect Civil War military experiences—specifically how "the youth's" experiences reflect the reality of the multi-day battle of Chancellorsville, which took place in Virginia beginning on May 1, 1863, and concluded on May 4 of the same year. The annotated text is preceded by introductory essays on Crane and on the Civil War. Crane's short story "The Veteran" is also included to allow readers to better understand the post-war lives of Civil War soldiers.
