Download or read book Migrating Faith written by Daniel Ramírez and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2015-09-14 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel Ramirez's history of twentieth-century Pentecostalism in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands begins in Los Angeles in 1906 with the eruption of the Azusa Street Revival. The Pentecostal phenomenon--characterized by ecstatic spiritual practices that included speaking in tongues, perceptions of miracles, interracial mingling, and new popular musical worship traditions from both sides of the border--was criticized by Christian theologians, secular media, and even governmental authorities for behaviors considered to be unorthodox and outrageous. Today, many scholars view the revival as having catalyzed the spread of Pentecostalism and consider the U.S.-Mexico borderlands as one of the most important fountainheads of a religious movement that has thrived not only in North America but worldwide. Ramirez argues that, because of the distance separating the transnational migratory circuits from domineering arbiters of religious and aesthetic orthodoxy in both the United States and Mexico, the region was fertile ground for the religious innovation by which working-class Pentecostals expanded and changed traditional options for practicing the faith. Giving special attention to individuals' and families' firsthand accounts and tracing how a vibrant religious music culture tied transnational communities together, Ramirez illuminates the interplay of migration, mobility, and musicality in Pentecostalism's global boom.

Download or read book How to be Well Read written by John Sutherland and published by Random House. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Generous, enjoyable and well informed.' Observer '500 expertly potted plots and personal comments on a wide range of pop and proper prose fiction.' The Times ___________________________________________________________ Ranging all the way from Aaron's Rod to Zuleika Dobson, via The Devil Rides Out and Middlemarch, literary connoisseur and sleuth John Sutherland offers his very personal guide to the most rewarding, most remarkable and, on occasion, most shamelessly enjoyable works of fiction ever written. He brilliantly captures the flavour of each work and assesses its relative merits and demerits. He shows how it fits into a broader context and he offers endless snippets of intriguing information: did you know, for example, that the Nazis banned Bambi or that William Faulkner wrote As I Lay Dying on an upturned wheelbarrow; that Voltaire completed Candide in three days, or that Anna Sewell was paid £20 for Black Beauty? It is also effectively a history of the novel in 500 or so wittily informative, bite-sized pieces. Encyclopaedic and entertaining by turns, this is a wonderful dip-in book, whose opinions will inform and on occasion, no doubt, infuriate. __________________________________________________ 'Anyone hooked on fiction should be warned: this book will feed your addiction.' Mail on Sunday 'A dazzling array of genres, periods, styles and tastes... chatty, insightful, unprejudiced (but not uncritical) and wise.' Times Literary Supplement
Download or read book Co Creation and Learning written by K.B. Akhilesh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-04 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to co-creation --- a complex, value-based, context-driven and collaborative effort to develop new paradigms, products and services to satisfy human wants. Co-creation is built not only around the perceptions of challenges, cause-and-effect relationships and constraints, but also around available alternatives for dealing with or overcoming those challenges. Co-creation is not about transferring or outsourcing activities, and neither is it about the customization of products and services. This book explains the emergence of the co-creation approach. It describes various models of value creation, as well as different stages and the contract process involved in co-creation. It also explores different types of learning and learning techniques, and how co-creation impacts the learning process. The book allows practitioners and policymakers to understand the processes involved in implementing co-creation in any organization, while also presenting case studies to show how to apply the relevant concepts in their day-to-day activities.
Download or read book The Art of American Screen Acting 1960 to Today written by Dan Callahan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern screen acting in English is dominated by two key figures: Method acting guru Lee Strasberg--who taught the "the art of experiencing" over "the art of representing"--and English theater titan Laurence Olivier, who once said of the Method's immersive approach, "try acting, it's so much easier." This book explores in detail the work of such method actors as Al Pacino, Ellen Burstyn, Jack Nicholson and Jane Fonda, and charts the shift away from the more internally focused Strasberg-based acting of the 1970s, and towards the more "external" way of working, exemplified by the career of Meryl Streep in the 1980s.
