Book Toward a Holistic Approach to Sustainable Development

Download or read book Toward a Holistic Approach to Sustainable Development written by World Bank and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the international community has recognized the need for an approach to development that considers the interdependence of human and natural systems. Single-sector approaches to development challenges are insufficient to produce sustainable landscapes that promote resilience and help communities mitigate and adapt to climate change. Achieving sustainable development requires stakeholders to work together to minimize trade-offs and increase synergies between different, and often competing, sector-focused goals. Integrated land use initiatives offer a holistic approach to addressing complex environmental and development challenges. This approach seeks to sustainably manage multiple land uses across landscapes, considering both the natural and human systems that depend on them. The objective of this report is to take stock of lessons learned, document best practices from a range of integrated land use initiatives, facilitate knowledge sharing, and provide a guide for practitioners who are looking to implement this approach. This report provides a basic toolkit for practitioners and raises awareness of the cutting-edge work happening in this space.

Book A New Approach to Sustainable Development

Download or read book A New Approach to Sustainable Development written by Nazar Al Baharna and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The greatest challenge and aspiration of the 21st century is sustainable development. A basic method for sustainable development addresses the two most pressing and human-perpetuated crises of this time in history namely the critical issues of climate and natural resource crises as well as the steadily worsening levels of poverty in most of the world's population. The Community Development Enterprise, CDE, approach to development, with its focus on the people, proposes a Holistic Rights Based solution to sustainable development, covering all the pillars of sustainable development, namely; Governance, Environment, Social, Economy, and Cultural. A solution which is a cross between decentralization and micro-business models. It will ensure a shift from centralized development to community development through a process that would facilitate the establishment and/or strengthening of the relationship of the organizations with its community. Thus, shifting development away from a solution that is merely economical, and providing a solution that will be real and durable. Such a development will be shaped by the Government and driven by a pioneering private sector - a development that raises a broad middle-class people who will enjoy good living standards through increased productivity and high-wage jobs.

Book Holistic Sustainability Through Craft Design Collaboration

Download or read book Holistic Sustainability Through Craft Design Collaboration written by Rebecca Reubens and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-18 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the intersection of craft, design and sustainability in the developing world. It argues that most sustainable design approaches and efforts fall short of implementing holistic sustainability, and in order to reach this goal, design must be underpinned by alternatives to the mainstream, technology-intensive, industrial design paradigm. Renewable materials such as bamboo, cork and hemp - which are abundantly available in the developing world - have the potential to be a viable resource base for sustainable development. Current sustainable design initiatives and approaches already recontextualize these materials using industrial techniques and technologies. However, these efforts fall short of impacting holistic sustainability and tend to focus on the ecological aspect. This book offers the development of one alternative to design for holistic sustainability, called the Rhizome Approach, which draws on existing sustainability praxis and craft. Holistic Sustainability Through Craft-Design Collaboration includes customizable tools which aim to empower designers to guide and evaluate their own designs. Through these tools, and the Rhizome Approach in general, the book aims to enable designers, and students of design, to move beyond green and sustainable design, to holistic sustainability design.

Book Linking Local and Global Sustainability

Download or read book Linking Local and Global Sustainability written by Sukhbir Sandhu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-10 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book takes a holistic approach to sustainability. Acknowledging the Brundtland definition, that sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, the book is specifically concerned with the ethics of contemporary social and environmental sustainability activity and thinking. It is concerned with the role of institutions–both local and global in achieving sustainability initiatives. All twelve chapters extend sustainability–conceptually, empirically and theoretically, and in doing so provide insights into linking local and global sustainability. The book refocuses sustainability as a series of interwoven and dynamic relationships, backed by just ethical decision-making, which begin locally, and reach out to impact the global level.
