Book Turning Back the Clock

Download or read book Turning Back the Clock written by Umberto Eco and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2007 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time: 2000 to 2005, the years of neoconservatism, terrorism, the twenty-four-hour news cycle, the ascension of Bush, Blair, and Berlusconi, and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. Umberto Eco's response is a provocative, passionate, and witty series of essays--which originally appeared in the Italian newspapers La Repubblica and L'Espresso--that leaves no slogan unexamined, no innovation unexposed. What led us into this age of hot wars and media populism, and how was it sold to us as progress? Eco discusses such topics as racism, mythology, the European Union, rhetoric, the Middle East, technology, September 11, medieval Latin, television ads, globalization, Harry Potter, anti-Semitism, logic, the Tower of Babel, intelligent design, Italian street demonstrations, fundamentalism, The Da Vinci Code, and magic and magical thinking. The famous author and respected scholar shows his practical, engaged side: an intellectual involved in events both local and global, a man concerned about taste, politics, education, ethics, and where our troubled world is headed.

Book excerpt: Claire Vincent is a misunderstood and confused girl who has no friends her own age. The kids at school think she's weird, and she'd rather be left alone than have to deal with their rude stares and hurtful comments. Her only friend is her bold and adventurous grandmother Millie, who's traveled the world and done everything from going on safaris to flying planes. Claire wants to be just like her, but that's much harder for her than anyone realizes. She's not courageous enough to even try - and so she remains a loner, burying her nose in books and escaping into the imaginative magical worlds she reads about. But when a new kid, Matt, moves next door, she finds herself slowly drawn into the world of the living, despite her misgivings. Matt would do anything to please her, and she finds herself depending on him for everything - friends, social life, and recognition. But it's a dependence she eventually grows to despise because it just makes her own weakness that much more apparent. She yearns for more - real magic in her life, to sweep her away from the land of the boring. When Claire's father decides to throw her grandmother a surprise seventy-fifth birthday party despite her grandmother's vehement aversion to celebrating birthdays, Claire finds out that a magical life might not be as desirable as she naively believed. An unexpected guest at her grandmother's party - Jack, a handsome boy new to town - seems to know Gran very well. Claire soon discovers her grandmother has been keeping a very big secret - and that secret might just be the perennially mysterious Jack.

Download or read book Hold Your Own written by Kae Tempest and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From playwright, novelist, spoken-word star, and the youngest-ever winner of the Ted Hughes Award, an electrifying poem-sequence based on the myth of the gender-switching prophet Tiresias. My heart throws its head against my ribs, / it's denting every bone it's venting something it has known since I arrived and felt it beat. Walking in the forest one morning, a young man disturbs two copulating snakes--and is punished by the goddess Hera, who turns him into a woman. So begins Hold Your Own, a riveting tale of youth and experience, wealth and poverty, sex and love, that draws ancient figures into a fiercely contemporary vision. Weaving elements of classical myth, autobiography and social commentary, Tempest uses the story of the blind, clairvoyant Tiresias to create four sequences of poems, addressing childhood, manhood, womanhood, and late life. The result is a rhythmically hypnotic tour de force--and a hugely ambitious leap forward for one of the most broadly talented and compelling young writers today.

Book English General Nouns

Download or read book English General Nouns written by Michaela Mahlberg and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2005-12-14 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes an innovative approach to general nouns. General nouns are defined as high-frequency nouns that are characterised by their textual functions. Although the concept is motivated by Halliday & Hasan (1976), the corpus theoretical approach adopted in the present study is fundamentally different and set in a linguistic framework that prioritises lexis. The study investigates 20 nouns that are very frequent in mainstream English, as represented by the Bank of English Corpus. The corpus-driven approach to the data involves a critical discussion of descriptive tools, such as patterns, semantic prosodies, and primings of lexical items, and the concept of 'local textual functions' is put forward to characterise the functions of the nouns in texts. The study not only suggests a characterisation of general nouns, but also stresses that functions of lexical items and properties of texts are closely linked. This link requires new ways of describing language.
