Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When gold was discovered in the far northern regions of Alaska and the Yukon in the late nineteenth century, thousands of individuals headed north to strike it rich. This massive movement required a vast network of supplies and services and brought even more people north to manage and fulfill those needs. In this volume, archaeologists, historians, and ethnologists discuss their interlinking studies of the towns, trails, and mining districts that figured in the northern gold rushes, including the first sustained account of the archaeology of twentieth-century gold mining sites in Alaska or the Yukon. The authors explore various parts of this extensive settlement and supply system: coastal towns that funneled goods inland from ships; the famous Chilkoot Trail, over which tens of thousands of gold-seekers trod; a host of retail-oriented sites that supported prospectors and transferred goods through the system; and actual camps on the creeks where gold was extracted from the ground. Discussing individual cases in terms of settlement patterns and archaeological assemblages, the essays shed light on issues of interest to students of gender, transience, and site abandonment behavior. Further commentary places the archaeology of the Far North within the larger context of early twentieth-century industrialized European American society.

Book excerpt: "No novel could contain more dramatic events than the history of Cripple Creek."--Wyoming Library Roundup "This is the fascinating story of the great Cripple Creek gold mines. But it is not told with fantasy: here are the plain facts of one of the most unbelievable incidents of our history, of a place in the Colorado mountains where a man threw his hat into the air, dug where it fell, and struck a rich vein of ore. . . . It is a fascinating story and the author has told it well."--Paul Engle, Chicago Tribune "Money Mountain mines as rich a vein of human interest, of solid accomplishment combined with picturesque skullduggery, as one is likely to find in all the annals of the western frontier. . . . Virtually every page bears evidence of patient researching through old newspaper files, court records, pioneer reminiscences and other obscure sources likely to throw light on events in and about the town during the fifteen years [1892-1907] when it was riding high. . . . Highly rewarding reading to anyone curious to know what manner of life was lived in the wide-open mining towns of the West."--Oscar Lewis, New York Herald Tribune Books "A roaring story of a roaring town. . . . It's an authentic contribution to the matter of the American West and dandy reading."--Saturday Review "Cripple Creek has found its historian. Money Mountain is sure to stand for years as a valid picture of that bizarre camp."--New York Times Book Review

Book excerpt: "Forced to leave the Ireland they loved during the Famine, the Cashmans quickly took to the ways of the New World. After some years in Boston and San Francisco, Nellie chose the mining camps of Nevada and British Columbia for her first restaurant, hotel and mining ventures. She then spent more than a decade in the mining centers at Tombstone, Bisbee, Nogales, Kingston and other Southwest boom towns. By the late 1890s, Nellie Cashman had been in boom and bust in a dozen frontier communities for twenty-five years." "Yet, this was the beginning, not the end of her quest for the gold and silver riches of the West. In 1898 she was off to the Klondike, where she operated restaurants and ran her own placer operations for six years, winning and losing a few fortunes. She then abandoned the "civilization" of the Yukon and headed into the Koyukuk River basin of Alaska, north of the Arctic Circle, the world's most northern gold mines. She persevered in this challenging environment until her death in 1925." "Author Chaput interprets the volatile, ever-changing life of this frontier stampeder with the use of court cases, tax records, newspaper accounts, mining and geological literature, and the voluminous Cashman Papers held by the Sisters of St. Ann in Victoria, stalwart friends of Nellie for fifty years."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
