Johnson was the Son of Daniel and Elizabeth (crabtree) Johnson. His father and mother were natives of Allegheny county, Maryland, where they were married and resided for some years and where an elder brother and sister of the subject of this sketch were born. They came to Ohio in 1802, before Ohio had arrived at the dignity of statehood, the father driving a wagon conveying their scanty belongings and the mother traveling on horseback with the children over the moun tains of West Virginia, then still a part of the Old Dominion. It was before the days of bridges, and they forded the Ohio river, the young mother performing this feat on horse back with a child in her arms. Tradition says that she crossed the Ohio three times in this manner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Western Pennsylvania Historical Magazine Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Western Pennsylvania Historical Magazine Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Historical Society of West Pennsylvania and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Western Pennsylvania Historical Magazine, Vol. 1 It is true, the society entertains views somewhat different from those held by the editor of The Olden Time. It does not believe that the society could be a substitute for a periodical like The Olden Time, nor that this magazine could take the place of the society, but holds that the one must be the complement of the other. The society must supply the capital and the energy necessary to the conduct of the magazine, while the magazine is the instrument for the publication of the materials collected by the society. For a number of years the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania realized that it would be advantageous to conduct a magazine, but did not feel able to undertake the work. It is now prepared to answer the call, and the result is its entry into the list of publishers. It is hoped that the magazine will be a valuable instrument in the preservation, discussion, and dissemination of matters of local history, biography and belles letters. It is intended whenever possible to publish original letters, journals, records and other memoranda. Articles dealing with modern as well as the older phases of the history and development of what in early days was known as the Western country, will appear from time to time. Occasionally excerpts from publications not ordinarily accessible to the general reader, will be printed. The department of "Notes and Queries," begun in this number, is to be continued as a feature of the magazine. The editors hope for the assistance and co-operation of every member of the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania, as well as of those readers whose names do not appear on its roles. Book Myers History of West Virginia Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Myers History of West Virginia Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Myers' History of West Virginia, Vol. 1 of 2 TO the public: There are several reasons why this book was written. Firstly - There is no single volume or set of volumes which contains an up-to - date history of \yest Virginia. Lewis' History is the nearest approach. It is a good one. And fairly supplies the purpose for which it was intended, namely: a text book for use in the public schools; but the information it contains is in such abbreviated form and omits so many subjects that are really of such historical impor tance as to emphasize the need of a book of more extensive detail and covering a wider scope of information for the use of the general reading public. Secondly - There was need of a book which would revive and help perpetuate the memory of some almost forgotten heroes and heroines who opened and made easier the way for the succeeding generations of people. Book Washington West of the Cascades Vol 1

Download or read book Washington West of the Cascades Vol 1 written by Herbert Hunt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Washington, West of the Cascades, Vol. 1: Historical and Descriptive; The Explorers, the Indians, the Pioneers, the Modern Fiction at its best is infused with nothing finer than the history of the State of Washington. And from the day when adventurous white men first set foot upon its soil we have the record - an incomparable one. For more than a hundred years the diary of its development is known. The aim of this work shall be to set forth the record in a new dress, adding to the recital material that has not been in book form, and bringing it as nearly as possible up to date. It is the intention to give considerable attention to the romantic period of over land travel and the first settlements. They were a race of giants were those men and women who braved the wilderness to plant an empire on the Northwest coast. Their sufferings never can be told in full. What brought them here? What is there in the American blood that ever hastens us to the farthest place? Why did the pioneers leave or ignore the thousands of rich acres of the middle west and drive to the coast? Especial attention will be given to the founding of cities and towns and to their development. The creation of this rich commonwealth is the work of a little more than sixty years, and it is the intention to point out some of the forces and many of the personalities that figured in the process. Old Fort Vancouver, blessed with a background rich in history; old Fort Steilacoom, the center of activities through the horrors of the Indian war; Olympia, the birthplace of the state, scene of the first settlement north of the Columbia River and prolific in romantic history; these are the spots around which the narrative of Washington, in its early reaches, must revolve, and the effort will be made to add something to their picturesqueness. Ogden's Letters from the West; William Bullock's Sketch of a Journey through the Western States; and Josiah Gregg's Commerce of the Prairies. The first two of these are slight sketches, chiefly interesting for their accounts of the Ohio Valley and its metropolis, Cincin nati, at the close of the first quarter of the nineteenth cen tury. The third is the classic description of the Santa F trail. 'although limited in scope, it fills its particular niche so completely, that it is entitled to rank as one of the great works of American history.'
