Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the War of Independence of the United States of America, Vol. 1 America, and especially some parts of it, havmg been discovered by the genius and intrepidity of Italians, received, at various times, as into a place of asylum, the men whom political or religious dis turbances had driven from their own countries in Europe. The security which these distant and desert regions presented to their minds, appeared to them preferable even to the endearments of country and of their natal air. Here they exerted themselves with admirable industry and forti tude, according to the custom of those whom the fervor of Opinion agitates and stimulates, in subduing the wild beasts, dispersing or destroying pernicious or importunate animals, repressing or subject ing the barbarous and savage nations that inhabited this New World, draining the marshes, controlling the course of rivers, clearing the forests, furrowing a virgin soil, and committing to its bosom new and unaccustomed seeds; and thus prepared themselves a climate less rude and hostile to human nature, more secure and more commo' dious habitations, more salubrious food, and a part of the conve niences and enjoyments proper to civilized life. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Medallic History of the United States of America, Vol. 1 Although our political history measures but a hundred years, it records so many memorable deeds, and the names of so many illustrious citizens, that our medals form, even now, an historically valuable collection, to say nothing of the great artistiemerit of some of them. During the War of Independence alone, how many exploits, how many heroes do we find worthy of being thus honoredl How numerous would have been our medals if Congress had not been imbued with the conviction that only the very highest achievements are entitled to such a distinction, and that the value of a reward is enhanced by its rarity! In voting those struck after the War of 1812 with Great Britain, and after that of I846 with Mexico, the same discretion was shown. There was still greater necessity for reserve during the late Civil War, and only two were presented during that painful period: one to Ulysses S. Grant, then a major-general, for Victories, and another to Cornelius Vanderbilt, in acknowledgment of his free gift of the steamship which bore his name. Book Barnes Popular History of the United States of America Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Barnes Popular History of the United States of America Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Joel Dorman Steele and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Barnes Popular History, of the United States of America, Vol. 1 Part II., embracing the Revolutionary War, begins the book proper. Here will be found a narrative of those years of waiting and sacrifice during which the nation achieved its independence. The battles are described with unusual fulness, as becomes these centennial times and the interest every locality will naturally possess in the events of its own neighborhood. Anecdotes and inci dents illustrative of the feelings of the day are freely interspersed. Accurate maps and diagrams enable the reader to trace easily every campaign, while a calendar indicates the important events of every day throughout the eventful struggle. Part III. Covers the Constitutional History of the country, embracing the formation of the Constitution and the gradual development of the nation down to 1860. This is detailed in four chapters of two decades each, indi cating as many different stages of growth and characteristic ideas. It has two great episodes the war of 1812 - 14, which secured for the young Repub lic the respect of foreign nations and the war with Mexico, which gave to it New Mexico and California, and let the tides of emigration pour into the El Dorado of the West. Part IV. Treats of the Civil War, which resulted in the abolition of slavery and the centralization of the governing power. Part V. Narrates the important events which have occurred since the close of the civil war. In preparing this story of our past, no pains have been spared to gather the best material from every source. The most reliable authorities have been consulted, recent investigations have been examined, and the ripest fruits of historical research have been carefully gathered. It has seemed that a narrative so full of picturesque incident and roman tic adventure, should sweep the reader along as by a charm and a fascination that a history so pregnant with pure thought and high endeavor, should awaken the sympathy and arouse the ambition of the most sluggish and that a freedom which has cost so much sweat of brain and blood, so much treasure of money and life, should grow inexpressibly precious. Thus may the outcome of this fresh attempt to tell the story of our Independence be a truer reverence for the past, a purer patriotism for the present, and a more hopeful outlook for the future. Burgoyne, exercised, two years after, such ravages, and perpetrated such cruelties, as we shall be constrained to relate, in the sequel of this history. Meanwhile, the congress could not overlook in silence the act of conciliation of lord North, without manifesting too great an inflexibility, and avowing that the Americans would listen to no accommodation. They, nevertheless, were not disposed to take a precipitate resolution on this point, and reflected upon it for the space of full two months. By this delay, they intended to show either a great maturity of judgment, or perhaps their indifference towards the act But what appears more certain, is that the war being commenced, they desired to wait the event of the first actions. The answer could not, in effect, be the same, if victory had crowned their efforts, as in case fortune had favored the English arms. When the conciliatory act arrived in America, the 30th of May, it is true the affair of Lexington had taken place, and the Americans had acquired in it a reputation for incontestable courage; but it was no more, in fact, than a warm brush between militia collected in haste, and a detachment of regular troops; not a set battle, from which any prognostic could be drawn relative to the final issue of the war. The congress saw perfectly well, that it would always be time to enter into a negotiation of arrangement; and, in case of any disastrous event, they wished to reserve a way open to accept the conditions which England herself had offered. Victory vould become of no utility to the Americans, if they had commenced by submitting to the terms proposed; and ill fortune would have made the conditions of accord no worse. No risk, therefore, was incurred by temporizing; and there might...

Book American Military History Volume 1

Download or read book American Military History Volume 1 written by Army Center of Military History and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.
