Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sinn Fein (Gaelic for "We Ourselves") was founded to promote the cultural revival and political independence of Ireland. History of the Sinn Fein Movement and the Irish Rebellion of 1916 is a detailed history of the movement, written by Francis P. Jones, a former member of the movement who had immigrated to the United States from Ireland. The book covers the period from the founding of Sinn Fein in Dublin in 1905 to the Easter Rising of April 1916. It deals with the economic, cultural, religious, and political aspects of Irish independence, as well as the twists and turns of British policy and the debates in Parliament over Home Rule. More than half of the book is a detailed account of the Easter Rising, based on documentary sources and the first-hand accounts of men involved in the fighting who had fled to the United States. The final chapters deal with the aftermath of the uprising, including the trial and execution of its leaders. A chapter on the "Women of the Nation" is by the author's wife, to whom the book is dedicated. The introduction is by John W. Goff (1848-1924), an immigrant from Ireland who was prominent in New York as a lawyer and judge. The appendix, "Ireland's Roll of Honor," contains a complete list of the names of the men killed in the fighting of April 1916 and of those sentenced to penal servitude, hard labor, or prison. The appendix concludes with details of the numbers of men deported and jailed without trial.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Rebellion of 1916: A Brief History of the Revolt and Its Suppression The Irish words Sinn F ein mean, literally, Ourselves alone. Irishmen should depend on themselves, and not on outsiders - this was the essence Of the teaching in the Sinn Fein movement. They should think in Irish, speak in Irish, write in Irish, dress in Irish, develop Irish resources, support Irish industries, and generally progress on purely Irish lines. This, too, was, in a great measure, the pro gramme of the Gaelic League, which was founded some years in advance of the Sinn Fein movement. There were, however. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Irish Rebellion of 1916 In the next place, the moral gravity of the Rebellion was fully matched by its military gravity; for it exposed Great Britain to a dis advantage which, serious as it would have been if she had been engaged in war with any other Power, was vastly more serious when she was engaged in war with Germany. Strategic geo graphy, especially in relation to sea power, is not a subject which the average British citizen has been trained to regard with intelligent interest. His lack of acquaintance with Ireland's history, and the fact that her foreign relations have long been merged with those of the neighbouring island, tend further to obscure his realisation of the strategic importance of Ireland. Yet the most cursory glance at Irish military history serves to show how capital is that importance, and it is emphasised by the frequency of the occasions, during the period when Great Britain enjoyed a complete immunity from invasion, on which the soldiers of foreign Powers have landed and fought on Irish soil. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Sinn Fein Stands For: The Irish Republican Movement; Its History, Aims and Ideals, Examined as to Their Significance to the World My suggestions as to a detailed plan for a non-parliamentary constitution will seem to some far-fetched, and I have candidly stated that I have given speculation free rein. But not without reason. After all, an author who should in 1912 have written of a Europe in which Poland was a power and the German Empire a memory, would have been thought a fanatic or a fool. Yet, we have lived to see such a Europe brought about in a few short years. In 1912, Irish Republicans were laughed at as cranks in an attic To-day they have given England the gravest of her problems. History no longer trudges slowly. So, perhaps, the social ideals which I have described in my long social chapter may be brought to realisation sooner than the sceptic may anticipate.
