Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Regality of Musselburgh: With Numerous Extracts From the Town Records So much is this acknowledged, that detached contributions like the present are encouraged everywhere - in England, per haps, more than in Scotland - and it is generally conceded that history - genuine history - is only to be written when the charter chests of long existing communities, as well as of religious houses, and those ancient families, whose ancestors have been active par ticipators in the great national dramas of the past, have been tho roughly ransacked. Much light has already been thrown upon the last two great eras in this country - the Reformation, including the Cromwellian period, and the Revolution - by the Opening up of previously hidden sources of information. The once popular and still classic History of Scotland, by Robertson, for emple, has been wholly cancelled by the greater researches of Tytler. That the work of excavation, how ever, is not yet by any means complete, we have numerous recent proofs in the sketchy, well written, but inaccurate History of England by Macaulay. The laboured defence of King William, in reference to the massacre of Glencoe, by that ingenious author, for instance, has been wholly upset by the production of one or two documents from the charter chest of Breadalbanel It is thus extremely dangerous for any writer to undertake history without a thorough know ledge Of facts, which his own or the researches of others mav have placed within his reach. Book excerpt: More of a Man presents the only known diaries of a skilled craft-worker in Victorian Canada: Andrew McIlwraith, a Scottish journeyman who migrated to North America during a tumultuous period marked by economic depression and early industrial change. McIlwraith's journals illuminate his quest to succeed financially and emotionally amidst challenging circumstances. The diaries trace his transformations, from an immigrant newcomer to a respected townsman, a wage worker to an entrepreneur, and a bachelor to a married man. Carefully edited and fully annotated by historians Andrew C. Holman and Robert B. Kristofferson, More of a Man features an introduction providing historical context for McIlwraith's life and an epilogue detailing what happened to him after the diaries end. Historians of labour, gender, and migration in the North Atlantic world will find More of a Man a valuable primary document of considerable insight and depth. All readers will find it a lively story of life in the nineteenth century.

Book The Battle of Pinkie 1547

Download or read book The Battle of Pinkie 1547 written by David Caldwell and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2023-07-27 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of Pinkie, fought between the English and the Scots in 1547, was the last great clash between the two as independent nations. It is a well-documented battle with several eyewitness accounts and contemporary illustrations. There is also archaeological evidence of military activities. The maneuvers of the two armies can be placed in the landscape near Edinburgh, despite considerable developments since the sixteenth century. Nevertheless, the battle and its significance has not been well understood. From a military point of view there is much of interest. The commanders were experienced and had already had battlefield successes. There was an awareness on both sides of contemporary best practice and use of up-to-date weapons and equipment. The Scots and the English armies, however, were markedly different in their composition and in the strategy and tactics they employed. There is the added ingredient that the fire from English ships, positioned just off the coast, helped decide the course of events. Using contemporary records and archaeological evidence, David Caldwell, Victoria Oleksy, and Bess Rhodes reconsider the events of September 1547. They explore the location of the fighting, the varied forces involved, the aims of the commanders, and the close-run nature of the battle. Pinkie resulted in a resounding victory for the English, but that was by no means an inevitable outcome. After Pinkie it briefly seemed as if the future of Britain had been redefined. The reality proved rather different, and the battle has largely slipped from popular consciousness. This book provides a reminder of the uncertainty and high stakes both Scots and English faced in the autumn of 1547.
