This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformation on the Continent, Vol. 1 of 3 IT is scarcely necessary to say that these volumes, ending with the death of Luther, do not contain a complete History of the Revolution which they profess to describe; they do not extend even to the earliest epoch assigned as that of its termination, nor do they treat, perhaps, with sufficient minuteness all the occurrences of the period which they embrace. There are, besides, some important observations, as to the influence of the Reformation on the political, social, and literary character of after-ages - a subject on which extremely different Opinions prevail among learned men - which have been omitted, if I may not rather say de ferred: for these deficiencies have been, for the most part, occasioned by an unexpected interruption, which has turned my attention, during the last few months, to other objects, and it is my purpose, should health and some literary leisure be continued to me, to supply them in a Fourth and concluding Volume. Book History of the Reformation in Europe Vol 1

Download or read book History of the Reformation in Europe Vol 1 written by J. H. Merle D'aubigne and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformation in Europe, Vol. 1: In the Time of Calvin At the conclusion of the preface to the first volume of the History of the Reformation, the author wrote, 'This work will consist of four volumes, or at the most five, which will appear successively.' These five volumes have appeared. In them are described the heroic times of Luther, and the effects produced in Germany and other countries by the characteristic doctrine of that reformer - justification by faith. They present a picture of that great epoch which contained in the germ the revival of Christianity in the last three centuries. The author has thus completed the task he had assigned himself; but there still remained another. The times of Luther were followed by those of Calvin. He, like his great predecessor, undertook to search the Scriptures, and in them he found the same truth and the same life; but a different character distinguishes his work. The renovation of the individual, of the Church, and of the human race, is his theme. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A History of the Reformation Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Reformation Classic Reprint written by Thomas M. Lindsay and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Reformation This History of the Reformation has been written with the intention of describing a great religious movement amid its social environment. The times were heroic, and produced great men, with striking individualities not easily weighed in modern balances. The age is sufficiently remote to compel us to remember that while the morality of one century can be judged by another, the men who belong to it must be judged by the standard of their contemporaries, and not altogether by ours. The religious revival was set in a framework of political, intellectual, and economic changes, and cannot be disentangled from its surroundings without danger of mutilation. All these things add to the difficulty of description. My excuse, if excuse be needed, for venturing on the task is that the period is one to which I have devoted special attention for many years, and that I have read and re-read most of the original contemporary sources of information. While full use has been made of the labours of predecessors in the same field, no chapter in the volume, save that on the political condition of Europe, has been written without constant reference to contemporary evidence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 1 of 2 The Lord Herbert judged it unworthy of him to tri e as others had done, and therefore made a more narrow search into records and original papers than all that had gone before him and with great fidelity and industry has given us the History of King Henry the Eighth. But in the transactions that concern religion, he dwells not so long as the matter required, leaving those to men of another profession, and judging it perhaps not so proper for one of his condition to pursue a full and accurate deduction of those matters. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 1 of 4 Who would suppose, for instance, that while Burnet was yet alive, he had been admonished of an error into which he had fallen, in speaking of the Council of Trullo, (or in T ratio as it should rather be) as a council holden in the fifth century, whereas it took place, in reality, not till the very end of the seventh, or beginning of the eighth century? Still however the original mistake has been repeated again and again in the text, in various editions, and the correction reserved for the addenda or appendix at the very end of the work. In the present edition the text will be found to be corrected as it should be, and the correction sent to the author, omitted. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformation in the Sixteenth Century, Vol. 1 The very charms of our secular historians have done much to throw church history and historians into the shade. In childhood we are fascinated with the spirit-stirring annals of Greece and Rome, and as we advance in years, Hume, Robertson, Gibbon, &c. Tend to con firm the illusion that while secular events form the staple of history, the memorials of that body to which all worldly things are subordin ated in the Divine counsels, and which is destined to surpass all earthly empires in duration and glory, are merely adventitious and episodical. Some of our histories of particular periods and churches, and many of our ecclesiastical biographies, are admirable of their kind. But, neither together nor separately, do they supply the place of more extensive works. No where do we find so long and important a period as the sixteenth century, treated with the fulness which it receives in the pages of this Genevan historian. If any be prejudiced against this work because written by a foreigner, be it remembered that this very circumstance is attended with peculiar advantages. Residing at one time in Germany, at an other in Belgium, settling finally at Geneva, and frequently visiting France, the author has had manifest facilities for collecting his materi sis, and by familiarity with some of the most important scenes of the Reformation, he has been enabled to describe these with much of the animation and graphic power of an eye-witness. Book Books for Bible Students Vol 1

Download or read book Books for Bible Students Vol 1 written by Herbert B. Workman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Books for Bible Students, Vol. 1: The Dawn of the Reformation I have entitled this little work The Dawn of the Reformation. My purpose is to trace the various influences and forces both within and without the Church, which produced the great revolution of the sixteenth century. At what hour dawn begins is always a matter of dispute, and depends largely on local circumstances. But one thing is certain. A new day has begun long before the average worker has commenced his toil. So with the Reformation. The study of its causes cannot commence with Erasmus or Savonarola; its methods and results were to some extent settled for it in the century before Luther or Cranmer. My narrow limits have compelled me to omit many things of interest, and to compress into a few lines others which demanded as many pages. I have constantly realised that to write a small history is more difficult than to write one of larger margins. In what I have included, as well as in what I have omitted, the understanding of the Reformation and its causes has alone had weight. If it be objected that I have given a disproportionate space to Wyclif, or made him bulk larger than he did in his own day, I must plead that his life has scarcely received the attention it deserves. The materials, in fact, for estimating his work and character have but recently become generally available.
