Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformation in Europe, Vol. 1: In the Time of Calvin The times of Luther Were followed by those of Calvin. He, like his great predecessor, undertook to search the Scriptures, and in them he found the same truth and the same life; but. A different character distinguishes his work. The renovation of the individual, of the Church, and of the human race, is his theme. If the' Holy Ghost kindles the lamp of truth in man, it is (according to Calvin) 'to the end that the entire man should be transformed.' In the kingdom of Christ, ' he says, 'it is only the new man that flourishes and has any vigour, and whom we ought to take into account.' This book was released on 2023-12-24 with total page 2238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean Henri Merle d'Aubigné presents the comprehensive scope of religious reform during the sixteenth century through Calvin's life and the church in Geneva. He outlines the people, places, and ideas that shaped the Reformation in France, England, Spain, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands. According to the author, the main theme of this book is the "renovation of the individual, of the Church, and of the human race." Following this thought, the whole book proves that Reformation resulted in political emancipation and brought about a new understanding of human freedom, which influenced the history of the three following centuries.

Download or read book The Reformation written by Diarmaid MacCulloch and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2005-03-25 with total page 1248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reformation and Counter-Reformation represented the greatest upheaval in Western society since the collapse of the Roman Empire a millennium before. The consequences of those shattering events are still felt today—from the stark divisions between (and within) Catholic and Protestant countries to the Protestant ideology that governs America, the world’s only remaining superpower. In this masterful history, Diarmaid MacCulloch conveys the drama, complexity, and continuing relevance of these events. He offers vivid portraits of the most significant individuals—Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, Loyola, Henry VIII, and a number of popes—but also conveys why their ideas were so powerful and how the Reformation affected everyday lives. The result is a landmark book that will be the standard work on the Reformation for years to come. The narrative verve of The Reformation as well as its provocative analysis of American culture’s debt to the period will ensure the book’s wide appeal among history readers.

Book History of the Reformation

Download or read book History of the Reformation written by Philip Schaff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 773 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformation, Vol. 1 I publish the history of the Reformation in advance of the concluding volume on the Middle Ages, which will follow in due time. The Reformation was a republication of primitive Christianity, and the inauguration of modern Christianity. This makes it, next to the Apostolic age, the most important and interesting portion of church history. The Luther and Zwingli celebrations of 1883 and 1884 have revived its memories, and largely increased its literature; while scholars of the Roman Church have attempted, with great ability, an ultramontane reconstruction of the history of Germany and Europe during the period of the Reformation. The Cultur-Kampf is still going on. The theological battles of the sixteenth century are being fought over again in modern thought, with a slow but steady approach to a better understanding and final settlement. Protestantism with its freedom can afford to be fair and just to Romanism, which is chained to its traditions. The dogma of papal infallibility is fatal to freedom of investigation. Facts must control dogmas, and not dogmas facts. Truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, is the aim of the historian; but truth should be told in love (Eph. 4 : 15). The signs of the times point to a new era in the ever onward march of Christ's kingdom. God alone foreknows the future, and sees the end from the beginning. Book excerpt: The Reformation was the seismic event in European history over the past 1000 years, and one which tore the medieval world apart. Not just European religion, but thought, culture, society, state systems, personal relations - everything - was turned upside down. Just about everything which followed in European history can be traced back in some way to the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation which it provoked. The Reformation is where the modern world painfully and dramatically began, and MacCulloch's great history of it is recognised as the best modern account.
