Excerpt: ...he had not yet learned the strength of the University of Paris. The Bull contained nothing contrary to custom or to canon law, and the politicians in the King's Council doubted what to do; but the University had no hesitation. It boldly pronounced those who had brought the Bull to be guilty of high treason, and demanded a public examination of its contents. This took place on May 21, when a Professor of Theology, Jean Courte-cuisse, impeached the Bull as an attack upon the royal dignity and the national honour, accused Benedict of promoting the Schism, and declared him deserving of deposition. The University then presented their conclusions, which denounced Benedict as a schismatic and a heretic, to whom obedience was no longer due; his Bull should be torn in pieces, and all who had brought or suggested it should be punished. The royal secretary cut the Bull in two, and handed it to the Rector of the University, who tore it into shreds before the assembly. Some of Benedict's friends were imprisoned on the suspicion of being previously acquainted with the contents of the Bull; even Peter d'Ailly only escaped by prudently absenting himself from Paris. The University again behaved with the same violence as it had shown in 1398, and even treated with injustice some of its most eminent sons. Nicholas de Clemanges, as Benedict's secretary, was suspected of having written the Bulls, and though he persistently denied it, he dared not enter France for some years, and when at length he returned, it was only to end his days in obscurity. Urged on by the University, the King proclaimed the neutrality of France, and wrote on May 22 to the Flight of Cardinals of both parties, exhorting them to leave fnedo' these Popes, who had not been able to find any...

Book A Companion to the Great Western Schism 1378 1417

Download or read book A Companion to the Great Western Schism 1378 1417 written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-09-30 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The division of the Church or Schism that took place between 1378 and 1417 had no precedent in Christianity. No conclave since the twelfth century had acted as had those in April and September 1378, electing two concurrent popes. This crisis was neither an issue of the authority claimed by the pope and the Holy Roman Emperor nor an issue of authority and liturgy. The Great Western Schism was unique because it forced upon Christianity a rethinking of the traditional medieval mental frame. It raised question of personality, authority, human fallibility, ecclesiastical jurisdiction and taxation, and in the end responsibility in holding power and authority. This collection presents the broadest range of experiences, center and periphery, clerical and lay, male and female, Christian and Muslim. Theology, including exegesis of Scripture, diplomacy, French literature, reform, art, and finance all receive attention.

This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public and Private History of the Popes of Rome, Vol. 1: From the Earliest Period to the Present Time; Including the History of Saints, Martyrs, Fathers of the Church, Religious Orders, Cardinals, Inquisitions, Schisms, and the Great Reformers A short but spirited review of the political condition of the world until Christianity was placed on the throne of the Roman empire, with the various heresies that have occurred, with their leading doctrines and principal actors, are set forth with great clearness and com prehensiveness. In a word, the reader of this work will find himself, at the close of its perusal, acquainted with all the leading facts, connected with the history of the Christian church, and the accompanying political history of the world. Coming from the pen of a Roman Catholic, but one who is enabled to see that good may be found out of the pale of his own church it may be read without the suspicion of its truth, naturally attendant on such a production from the pen of one of adverse faith. The vices of the men who claim to be the vicars Of Christ on earth are not slurred over; the horrors at tendant on religious bigotry and fanaticism in the persecution, torture and murder of fellow men, are truthfully portrayed; and the claim for the popes to infallibility best exposed by the record of their ambition, avarice, public dishonesty and private turpitude.
