Book excerpt: Huron is pleasurable reading for any student of natural history or the Great Lakes region, or for anyone who has ever spent time at a summer cottage or wished to do so. Napier Shelton takes us on a journey as he spends a year at his family's cottage on the lake. Having visited Lake Huron for over thirty years, Shelton weaves family memories into his evocative and informed account of the seasons on this great lake. In 1995, Shelton spent a year at the cottage more fully exploring Lake Huron and its varied shores. He writes about Native American fishing rights, small towns, the fearsome ice, and the migration of birds. He follows the seasonal changes of life in the water. We accompany him on commercial fishing boats, a research vessel studying lake trout, and a Coast Guard icebreaker. We experience the travels and tragedies of venturers on Lake Huron over the past four centuries. Huron is pleasurable reading for any student of natural history or the Great Lakes region, or for anyone who has ever spent time at a summer cottage or wished to do so.

Book Oliphant and Its Islands Lake Huron

Download or read book Oliphant and Its Islands Lake Huron written by Irene Monkman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oliphant and Its Islands, Lake Huron: Historical and Descriptive Sketches Indian occupation Of the days of Indian occupation of the Saugeen Peninsula and its Islands, Time and Tradition have left us only a few traces. The first tribe known to have inhabited the region was a band of the Algonquins called the Ottawas, who were here in the sixteenth century, doubtless the Cheveux relevez (straight-up hair), mentioned by Champlain. Later this tribe gave way to a band of the Ojibway Indians from the Lake Superior district; and at the same time, at least one tribe of Hurons lived on the shore in the beautiful spot known as Red Bay. In the beginning of the seventeenth century the two tribes came into conflict with each other and in a bloody battle on the shore of this bay, the Hurons killed so many of the Ojibways that their blood colored the water a deep red from whence came the name. Book Grand Lake and Presque Isle

Download or read book Grand Lake and Presque Isle written by Judith Kimball and John Porter and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For centuries, Presque Isle served as a way station for Native Americans and explorers. Lumbering and shipping led to the development of wooding stations along the Lake Huron shore, where settlements emerged. The roads created by loggers eventually led to the building of resorts and hotels for tourists. Postcard History Series: Grand Lake and Presque Isle explores Burnhams Landing, the abandoned community of Bell, Presque Isles two renowned lighthouses, two youth camps, the new limestone mining industry at Rockport, and other important sites. Some 20th-century visitors bemoaned water that was too cold, fish that were not biting, journeys that were too long, or visits that were too short. The postcard messages indicate that they knew Grand Lake and Presque Isle would remain in their hearts and minds until they could return."-- From back cover.
