Book History of the 13th Infantry Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers During the Great Rebellion Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the 13th Infantry Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers During the Great Rebellion Classic Reprint written by Homer B. Sprague and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the 13th Infantry Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers, During the Great Rebellion The regimental narrative is based mainly on the author's private diary - The Life and Sufferings of Captain Sprague. So far as the events came under his personal observation he is quite confident of the essential correctness of the statements but even here, he dares not hope he has escaped all errors. Jotted down at odd moments, in the midst of weary marches, on picket duty, on horseback, in the rain sometimes by the light of blazing buildings, often in presence of hissing bullets, as during our six weeks-at Port Hudson undoubtedly mistaken impressions may have been recorded. Having been present, however, in every battle, skirmish, siege, and march, in which the regiment was engaged, until the nineteenth of September, 1864, when he had the misfortune to charge too far and hold his position too long, and so fell into the enemy's hands, the author fears more that his observations may lack breadth than that they may be wanting in distinctness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Twenty-First Regiment, Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, During the Civil War, 1861-1865 Inexorable Time is chargeable with many of the apparent delays, and the procrastination common to our fallen nature may be held responsible for the rest. Details and incidents fade and become indistinct as the events with which they are identified recede into a remoter past. Delays that are really unavoidable for reasons that seem good and sufficient to the committee, appear inexcusable in the eyes of comrades to whom the conditions are unfamiliar and who look only to the desired reality of having the volume in hand. Such meagre data came in response to repeated appeals that the completion of the task has seemed at times almost hopeless. Undertaken as a labor of love, the work has proved far more exacting than was anticipated and has been full of discouragements which only those engaged in its fulfillment can appreciate. The committee has endeavored to make the book, so far as possible, strictly a regimental history, not a general criticism on the conduct of the war. Irrelevant matter has been largely excluded and references to other regiments and organizations have been usually made only when the situation could not otherwise be clearly set forth. Book Souvenir of Excursion to Battlefields by the Society of the Fourteenth Connecticut Regiment and Reunion at Antietam

Download or read book Souvenir of Excursion to Battlefields by the Society of the Fourteenth Connecticut Regiment and Reunion at Antietam written by H. S. Stevens and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Souvenir of Excursion to Battlefields by the Society of the Fourteenth Connecticut Regiment and Reunion at Antietam: September 1891; With History and Reminiscences of Battles and Campaigns of the Regiment on the Fields Revisited Only the insistence of comrades whose requests for service I can never decline to comply with could have induced me to undertake the preparation of this volume. It is designed, as believed to be desirable, not only as a souvenir of the trip itself, but to give our guest excursionists explanations and descriptions it was impossible to give them during the trip and to give the comrades historical and reminiscent data and views of places made memorable to them long ago. Should such data not be given now they may never be given. While the narrative and reminiscent style of writing necessary causes a different treatment of the matter from the purely historical style I have endeavored to verify things stated from either personal knowledge, statements of reliable persons or official reports. In such a work it is neither feasible nor proper that full casualty lists at battles be given nor full mention made of individuals deserving mention. About securing views of some points desired, especially of our old camp at Falmouth, I have been disappointed, and some views taken necessarily when nature would "weep" have not the clearness wished for; evoking the confession often necessary heretofore, that with my most thoughtful and strenuous endeavor I cannot achieve all I long to in my work for the regiment. With unabated affection for the old comrades of the Fourteenth and their friends I submit my work. If it shall please and profit them at all I shall feel recompensed for the care and effort it has caused me.
