Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the First Church in Boston, 1630-1880 Captain Pearce to the coast of Ireland in quest Of a fresh supply. It must have been that that country was thought to be nearer than any other, otherwise there would seem to be some reason for thinking with Cotton Mather, that perhaps there were other places more over owing with milk and honey, to which it would have been wiser to send. However as afterwards appears, the errand proved fruitful of success. In spite of these adversities - we might rather say because of them - the people hurried on the organization of the church. The 3oth of July was set apart as a day Of fasting and prayer, and after appropriate religious exercises, Governor Winthrop, deputy-governor Dudley, Mr. Isaac Johnson, and Mr. John Wilson subscribed the following Church covenant, the same which is continued with us to day. Book excerpt: "I always consider the settlement of America with reverence and wonder as the opening of a grand scene and design in Providence, for the illumination of the ignorant and the emancipation of the slavish part of mankind all over the Earth " -John Adams, a fragmentary draft of A Dissertation on Canon and Feudal Law Such were the sentiments of John Adams, the second president of the United States, written over one hundred fifty years after a brave and ill-supplied group of emigrants attempted to escape religious persecution and excessive taxation in their homeland of England. They settled in a place called Massachusetts Bay under the leadership of Governor John Winthrop. Some returned to England, while others succumbed to the harsh conditions they encountered. A minority persevered and had the courage to stand up to the theocratic oligarchy of their leaders, who lacked tolerance for any other form of religious worship different from their own. Ultimately, the government that was established became a model for democracies throughout the world. Among these stalwart individuals stood a young, simple family named Alcocke, who overcame innumerable, extraordinary difficulties. They would help to shape the new colony into "the grand scene and design in Providence". These were the true and unsung founders of America!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the first three generations in Puritan New England, this book explores changes in language, gender expectations, and religious identities for men and women. The book argues that laypeople shaped gender conventions by challenging the ideas of ministers and rectifying more traditional ideas of masculinity and femininity. Although Puritan's emphasis on spiritual equality had the opportunity to radically alter gender roles, in daily practice laymen censured men and women differently – punishing men for public behavior that threatened the peace of their communities, and women for private sins that allegedly revealed their spiritual corruption. In order to retain their public masculine identity, men altered the original mission of Puritanism, infusing gender into the construction of religious ideas about public service, the creation of the individual, and the gendering of separate spheres. With these practices, Puritans transformed their 'errand into the wilderness' and the normative Puritan became female.
