George Rogers Clark went to Virginia, and presented plans for the occupancy of Illinois by Americans, to Patrick Henry, Governor of the state. Illinois was then under the jurisdiction of Virginia. Clark receiv ed his instructions in January, 1778, and in February set out for Pittsburgh. He gathered four companies of men, and captured Kaskaskia without shed ding a drop of blood. This signal vic tory owed its bloodless triumph to the fact that the people of Illinois County had a wholesome dread of the Virgin ians, whom they called long knives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Commemorative Booklet of the Seventy-Fifth Anniversary of the First Baptist Church, Champaign, Illinois, 1864-1939 When I arrived in Champaign on the 15th of September, 1862, I knew John P. White and his father, who lived with him in the house now owned and occupied by Frank Harris, southwest corner of Church and Elm streets. I knew them as Baptists and learned the wife of John P. White was also a Baptist and that these persons had lived here since about 1851' not far from the park here in the city. In 1853, Mr. Curtis F. Columbia and wife, Mrs. Nancy Columbia, came to live in a house about three hundred feet north of where they now live. They were Baptists at that time, Mr. Columbia having been baptized at Mahomet, but on moving to where they now live, or near to it, they became members in Urbana where Mrs. Columbia had been baptized. The father of Mrs. Columbia, whose name was Cox, lived north of Urbana and at her home Mr. Columbia was married to her. On this farm, their son, Thomas B. Columbia, was born and their other three children, Mary, Emma and Hattie, were born in theold home, just north of Champaign. A Baptist church was organized soon after Champaign was laid out, I suppose sometime between 1856 and 1860. John P. White and his father and perhaps the wife of John P. White, were members. Mr. Columbia informed me of this and said that he and Mrs. Columbia brought letters from Urbana and were among the constituent members of that first Church. Rev. A. L. Farr was the first pastor and it appears that the Church was for a while prosperous. Discord, however, developed later and Mr. Farr gave up the care of the church, and the membership was dissolved. About the year 1860, a Mr. Thomas came along and served as pastor, but it is not certain whether the old organization had dissolved before he came or not. Informa tion received indicates that he was not a very prudent man, and did not ac complish anything in uniting the members. As the Rebellion of the Southern States took place about that time and the war for its suppression commenced, Mr. Thomas went into the service of the U. S., either as a chaplain or soldier. The Commissioners then turned their attention to the selection of the spot, which, for all the years to come, Should be the County Seat of the new-born County. This was no easy task. It took not only clear judgment and courage, but also faith and vision. Several of the very early settlers who had come to this region had chosen a beautiful wooded location which they had named Blooming Grove, and had built homes there. At this time of year the wild fruit trees were in full bloom, the prairie was carpeted by flowers of every hue, and the peace of God seemed to rest over the unturned sod. At first this appeared the logical place for the location of the busy city they hoped soon to see rising on the prairie. Again there was discussion and delay. Then Honorable James Allen, who had been active in urging the formation of the new County, offered to give twenty-two and one-half acres of his own land lying north and west of the tract under consideration. A few miles made little difference in those days, so the offer was accepted and the town received its name. Thus Bloomington came into being. The town was Soon laid out. The twenty-two and one-half acres were divided into twelve squares, the boundaries were located and the streets named. Front Street marked the southern limits of the town; North Street, now called Monroe Street, marked the northern boundary; East Street, the eastern; and West Street, now called Roosevelt Avenue, the western, with a central space reserved for a Court House. Most of the earliest settlers of this region were Christian people who longed for the Christian fellowship and religious instruction and inspira tion to which they had been accustomed. Whenever possible they met in little groups to talk and pray together, looking forward hopefully to the time when there would be churches, schools, and libraries here. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the land of Central Illinois. When ever a new-comer arrived, his denominational preference was one of the first questions asked him. In 1824, before there was even a separate County, a little group of seven had formed the First Methodist Church, and for seven years the only preaching services they had were held in the home of one of their number. By this time there was a small one story Court House, which for four years they rented for their religious services.
