Book Celebrating a Century of Ecumenism

Download or read book Celebrating a Century of Ecumenism written by John A. Radano and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-30 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern ecumenism traces its roots back to the 1910 World Missionary Conference in Edinburgh. Celebrating a Century of Ecumenism brings readers up to date on one hundred years of global dialogue between many different church traditions, including Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist, Roman Catholic, Pentecostal, Evangelical, Orthodox, Baptist, Disciples of Christ, Oriental Orthodox, and more. Eighteen essays by authors representing a wide spectrum of denominational interests outline the achievements of this movement toward unity. The first part of the book focuses on multilateral dialogue that involved a variety of churches attempting to delineate common ground, with considerable progress reported. The second part describes bilateral discussions between two churches or groups of churches. Celebrating a Century of Ecumenism is one small marker along the way to the unity that many Christians desire, and the report it provides will encourage those involved in ecumenical discussions. Book Ecumenism A Guide for the Perplexed

Download or read book Ecumenism A Guide for the Perplexed written by R. David Nelson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-27 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecumenism: A Guide for the Perplexed is a comprehensive introduction to the methods, achievements, and future prospects of the modern ecumenical movement. The authors begin the volume by charting out a serviceable definition of ecumenism, a term that has long been a source of confusion for students of theology and church history. They review the chronology of the modern ecumenical movement and highlight the major events, figures, accomplishments, and impasses. This historical survey is followed by critical examinations of three significant challenges for contemporary ecumenical theology and practice. Along the way, the authors provide commentary upon the difficulties and prospects that the ecumenical movement might anticipate as it enters this new millennium.

In Receptive Ecumenism and the Renewal of the Ecumenical Movement, Antonia Pizzey offers a comprehensive, systematic analysis of Receptive Ecumenism. While still emerging, Receptive Ecumenism is highly promising because it prioritises the need for ecclesial conversion. Pizzey explores the scope and complexity of Receptive Ecumenism, providing much-needed clarity on its aim, key developmental influences and distinctiveness, as well as its virtuous character and relationship with Spiritual Ecumenism. Book Embattled Ecumenism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jill K. Gill
  • Publisher : Northern Illinois University Press
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 9780875804439
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Embattled Ecumenism written by Jill K. Gill and published by Northern Illinois University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vietnam War and its polarizing era challenged, splintered, and changed The National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. (NCC), which was motivated by its ecumenical Christian vision to oppose that war and unify people. The NCC's efforts on the war exposed its strengths and imploded its weaknesses in ways instructive for religious institutions that bring their faith into politics. Embattled Ecumenism explores the ecumenical vision, anti- Vietnam War efforts, and legacy of the NCC. Gill's monumental study serves as a window into the mainline Protestant manner of engaging political issues at a unique time of national crisis and religious transformation. In vibrant prose, Gill illuminates an ecumenical institution, vision, and movement that has been largely misrepresented by the religious right, dismissed by the secular left, misunderstood by laity, and ignored by scholars outside of ecumenical circles. At a time when the majority of scholarly work is committed to looking at the religious right, Gill's groundbreaking study of the Protestant Left is a welcome addition. Embattled Ecumenism will appeal to scholars of U.S. religion, politics, and culture, as well as historians of evangelicalism and general readers interested in U.S. history and religion.

Book excerpt: Whenever an attempt has been made in recent years at a diagnosis of the ecumenical movement, an impression has emerged of stagnation or even resignation. Has the momentum been lost? Taking this question as his starting point, in this book Konrad Raiser undertakes a critical examination of the present-day problems areas in the ecumenical movement. Book Shoki Coe

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonah Chang
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 9782825415627
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Shoki Coe written by Jonah Chang and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shoki Coe (1914-1988) was a pastor of the Taiwan Presbyterian Church who grew up in Japanese occupied Taiwan. He went on to become a champion of Taiwanese freedom, a pioneer of Asian theology, and an advocate of Christianity in the global south. This is his story, well researched and engagingly written by Jonah Chang. Coe was educated under Japanese rule and went to Cambridge for his ministerial education. He was involved in the ecumenical movement from the early 1950s, became a seminary president in Taiwan, and championed a contextual approach to ministry and mission. He served from 1965 to 1979 with the Theological Education Fund, where his deep influence helped to change the paradigm for theology and ministry internationally. Coe's story documents not only the growth and maturity of the worldwide ecumenical movement and the navigation of East-West and North-South tensions, but also the birth and legitimation of a distinctly contextual approach to world Christianity. *** "One of the most significant contributions of this book is that it captures the great extent to which Coe's local and international commitment as a theological educator was based on his strong sense of "m7-goan7," a Taiwanese Hoklo expression signifying "a sense of what is totally unacceptable." - The Ecumenist, Vol. 50, No. 4, Fall 2013
