Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: the East Lancashire Regiment was extended to no less than seventeen battalions during the Great War, and was represented on every front from France to Mesopotamia, it will be readily understood that it has not been possible to record here all the deeds which made yet more honoured the name of the East Lancashire Regiment. But it is hoped that those who served with the Regiment will find something in these pages which will recall old memories, and that the younger generation will be enabled to gain some small insight into a life that the accident of birth has spared them from experiencing.Four members of the Regiment gained the Victoria Cross. Two of these lost their lives in winning this highest award to which a soldier can aspire, and one deliberately threw away his own life in order that his comrades might be saved from certain death.Of such material were the men made who went forth to fight for the honour and glory of their Regiment. If this book does anything to perpetuate their memory it will have served its purpose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The War Diaries for the Great War, held under WO95, represent one of the most popular record collections held at the National Archives, Kew, London. For researchers and family historians, the War Diaries contain a wealth of information of far greater interest than the army could ever have predicted. They provide unrivalled insight into daily events on the front line and are packed with fascinating detail. They contain no modern editing, opinions or poorly judged comments, just the war day by day, written by the men who fought this 'War to end all Wars. They are without question, the most important source of information available on the war on the Western Front. Full colour facsimile of each page with specially created chronological index. What is a War Diary? The headquarters of each unit and formation of the British Army in the field was ordered to maintain a record of its location, movements and activities. For the most part, these details were recorded on a standard army form headed 'War diary or intelligence summary'. What details are given? Details given vary greatly, depending on the nature of the unit, what it was doing and, to some extent, the style of the man writing it. The entries vary from very simple and repetitive statements like 'Training' up to many pages of description when a unit was in battle. Production of the diary was the responsibility of the Adjutant of the headquarters concerned. Is there any other information or documents with the diaries? Some diaries have other documentation attached, such as maps, operational orders and after-action reports.

Book Loyal North Lancashire Regiment 1914 1919

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Loyal North Lancs is one of the proudest names among British Army Regiments, and this massive history is a fitting memorial to their performance in the Great War. The Regiment served in virtually every theatre - the Western Front; Gallipoli; Egypt; Palestine; East Africa and Macedonia; - and this book tells the story of them all. The First Battalion of the regiment were in at the first - taking part in the defence of Ypres at Langemarck and Gheluvelt; and were in at the finish - participating in the breaking of the HIndenburg LIne. IN between, they fought at the battles of Neuve Chapelle and Aubers RIdge in 1915; the Somme in 1916; and the battles of Arras and Passchendaele in 1917. The 2nd Battalion was sent to East Africa and took part in the disastrous attack on Tanga and the subsequent frustrating campaign against that guerilla leader of genius, General Von Lettow-Vorbeck. Towards the end of the war, the battalion served in Egypt, Palestine and on the western front. The regiment s 1st/4th and 2nd/4th (territorial) battalions fought at Festubert in 1915 and then on the Somme and in the Ypres salient and Passchendale, and took part in the breaking of the HIndenburg line. A comprehensive, plainand unvarnished history of the regiment s huge contribution to the world war, this book, fully illustrated with maps and photos, and with appendices covering awards, uniforms, colours and honours, is a book that all lovers of Lancashire and all interested in the history of the Great War will treasure.

Book excerpt: Numbering over five million men, Britain's army in the First World War was the biggest in the country's history. Remarkably, nearly half those men who served in it were volunteers. 2,466,719 men enlisted between August 1914 and December 1915, many in response to the appeals of the Field-Marshal Lord Kitchener. How did Britain succeed in creating a mass army, almost from scratch, in the middle of a major war ? What compelled so many men to volunteer ' and what happened to them once they had taken the King's shilling ? Peter Simkins describes how Kitchener's New Armies were raised and reviews the main political, economic and social effects of the recruiting campaign. He examines the experiences and impressions of the officers and men who made up the New Armies. As well as analysing their motives for enlisting, he explores how they were fed, housed, equipped and trained before they set off for active service abroad. Drawing upon a wide variety of sources, ranging from government papers to the diaries and letters of individual soldiers, he questions long-held assumptions about the 'rush to the colours' and the nature of patriotism in 1914. The book will be of interest not only to those studying social, political and economic history, but also to general readers who wish to know more about the story of Britain's citizen soldiers in the Great War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “First class . . . a book that helps the reader to understand just what the ordinary soldier thought about his lot in the Great War.” —The Western Front Association This is a most unusual chronicle of the events of one man during the Great War. A professional soldier at the outbreak, Edward Roe was one of the first to cross over to France in 1914 and as such fought in the early battles of the war and took part in the Retreat from Mons. He was there for the crossing of the Marne and Aisne, the dreadful fighting at Ploegsteert and for the extraordinary events during the first Christmas. Remarkably he witnessed the debacle at Gallipoli and was part of the rear-guard of the Army during the re-embarkation and evacuation of the Peninsula. Thereafter the scene shifts to Mesopotamia and the Tigris Corps in the attempt to relieve General Townshend at Kut. Wounded he returned for the final campaign that captured Baghdad. “The author of these unique and extraordinarily moving diaries, which are supported by excellent maps and footnotes, was Edward Roe, an Irishman who had already served nine years with the British Army by the outbreak of the first world war.” —The Times
