Book History of the American Civil War Vol 2 of 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the American Civil War Vol 2 of 3 Classic Reprint written by John William Draper and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Civil War, Vol. 2 of 3 The events considered in this volume occurred between the accession of Mr. Lincoln and the Proclamation of Freedom to the Slaves. Chronologically they range from the 4th of March, 1861, to the 1st of January, 1863, inclusive. An examination of these events shows that they may be conveniently grouped under certain sections or heads. By that means they are more easily borne in mind, and their relation to each other more clearly understood. The secession movement exhibited the character of a conspiracy for some time after the accession of Lincoln. There may be a difference of opinion as to the exact epoch at which it lost that character, but, for reasons subsequently mentioned, I have placed the limit at the battle of Bull Run, which also coincides with the translation of the Confederate seat of power to Richmond, manifested by the assembly of a Congress in that city on July 20th, 1861. The battle of Bull Run satisfied both the national government and its antagonist that the results sought by each could not be attained by the tumultuary levies which the people, then unacquainted with war, had up to that time supposed would be sufficient. It had become plain that real armies must be called into existence. The period during which the resources on both sides were organized is closed by Lincoln's general War Order of the 27th of January, 1862, commanding an advance of the national forces. Meantime, however, certain small military affairs had been taking place. These, though they excited public attention very much at the time, exerted, in reality, little or no influence on the general result. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Civil War, Vol. 3 of 3 IN the work now completed by this volume I have endeavored to convert the annals of the Civil War into a history. In the annals of a nation, each occurrence, Whether important or unimportant, is presented as an isolated fact, irrespective Of its bear ing on the general course of affairs. Its philosophical connection with other occurrences is not necessarily traced out. The first duty of one who would write a history is to take such annals of the events with which he has to deal, and to discover among them what may be termed the master-facts. In his narrative he must bring these into prominence, making them the conspicuous centres around which the minor or subordinate facts are grouped. The impression which he will finally leave on the mind of his reader depends upon the Clearness Of his narrative, and this, in its turn, de pends upon the completeness with which the rule here indicated has been Observed. Book Stonewall Jackson and the American Civil War Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stonewall Jackson and the American Civil War, Vol. 1 of 2 The second lesson is that to hand over to civilians the administration and organisation of the army, whether in peace or in war, or to allow them to interfere in the selection of officers for command or promotion, is most injurious to efficiency; while, during war, to allow them, no matter how high their political capacity, to dictate to commanders in the field any line of conduct, after the army has once received its commission, is simply to ensure disaster. The first of these lessons is brought home to us by the opening events of this unreasonably protracted war. As I have elsewhere said, most military students will admit that had the United States been able, early in 1861, to put into the field, in addition to their volunteers, one Army Corps of regular troops, the war would have ended in a few months. An enormous expenditure of life and money, as well as a serious dislocation and loss of trade, would have been thus avoided. Never have the evil consequences which follow upon the absence of an adequate and well-organised army been more forcibly exemplified. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stonewall Jackson and the American Civil War, Vol. 2 of 2 Before Yorktown mcclellan's five army corps had been held in check, first by men, then by protected by earthworks of feeble profile.1 The fort at Gloucester Point was the key of the Confederate lines.' mcclellan, however, although a division was actually under orders to move against it, appears to have been unwilling to risk a failure.3 The channel of the York was thus closed both to his transports and the gunboats, and he did nothing whatever to interfere with Johnston's long line of communications, which passed at several points within easy reach of the river bank. Nor had he been more active since he had reached West Point. Except for a single ex pedition, which had dispersed a Confederate division near Hanover Court House, north of the Chickahominy, he had made no aggressive movement. He had never attempted to test the strength of the fortifications of Richmond, to hinder their construction, or to discover their weak points. His urgent demands for reinforcements had appeared in the Northern newspapers, and those newspapers had found their way to Richmond. From the same source the Confederates were made aware that he believed himself confronted by an army far larger than his own; and when, on the departure of Whiting's division for the Valley, he refused to take advantage of the opportunity to attack Lee's diminished force, it became abundantly clear, if further proof were wanting, that much might be ventured against so timid a commander. This book was released on 2019-02-23 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civil War in America, Vol. 1 IT has been the author's purpose to write an accurate and interest ing history of the Civil War within moderate limits. In prepara tion for this work, he has visited all the principal. Battlefields, so as to see for himself the ground upon which the war was fought. This has brought him into contact with the people of the South and made him somewhat familiar with their character and habits, as well as their country and their occupations. It has enabled him to see with considerable accuracy the background Of the events with which he was concerned. Thus his preparation has not been altogether a labour with books. It has been One of Observation as well. And he has sought to transfer to his pages some of the im pressions he has thus received. From books his materials have been the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. For a copy Of which, comprising a hundred and thirty volumes with numerous maps and charts, the author is indebted to the Hon. Joseph J. Gill, sometime a Member of Congress from Ohio. For this and other kindness a heartfelt acknowledgment is here made in the hope that it will also perpetuate the remembrance of a friendship which continued unbroken for many years. The author has also given attention to other narratives of actual participants. While the works of many others have been consulted.
