Book A History of the Ninth Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry

Download or read book A History of the Ninth Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry written by Marion Morrison and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-11-22 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marion Morrison's 'A History of the Ninth Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry' presents a comprehensive account of the regiment's military actions during the American Civil War. Initially, Morrison compiled the history as a newspaper article, but on the urging of officers and soldiers, expanded it to include not only battles but also personal accounts of daily life during marches and scouts. Using information provided by Adjutant Klock and the soldiers themselves, Morrison felt it was crucial to bring to light the Ninth Regiment's deeds, often unrecognized by the media. This book is a tribute to the brave men who served and an important source for future historians seeking to understand this critical period in American history.

Book excerpt: We Were The Ninth is a translation, carefully edited and thoroughly annotated, of an important Civil War regiment. The Ninth Ohio--composed of Ohio Germans mostly from Cincinnati--saw action at Rich Mountain and Carnifex Ferry in West Virginia, Shiloh, Corinth, Perryville, Hoover's Gap, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Chickamauga. The Ninth began the War amid misgivings (Would a German-speaking regiment in the Union Army cause chaos?) and ended its active service among the honored units. It continued as an active German-speaking veterans' organization. Constantin Grebner published this significant history, in German, in 1897 and noted that it "is intended as neither a history of the war nor a definitive account of battles. Rather, it is restricted to a straightforward, veracious report of what happened to The Ninth, and to recounting as accurately as possible The Ninth's experiences as a wartime regiment." Frederic Trautmann's English translation is faithful to Grebner's original text, preserving its integrity while maintaining its energy, precision, and grace.

Book excerpt: The saga of a nation divided—from the Union Army’s disaster at Fredericksburg to its triumph at Gettysburg—by a Pulitzer Prize–winning Civil War chronicler. In the second book of the Army of the Potomac Trilogy, Bruce Catton—one of America’s most honored Civil War historians—once again brings the great battles and the men who fought them to breathtaking life. As the War Between the States moved through its second bloody year, General Ambrose Burnside was selected by President Lincoln to replace the ineffectual George “Little Mac” McClellan as commander of the Union Army. But the hope that greeted Burnside’s ascension was quickly dashed in December 1862 in the wake of his devastating defeat at Fredericksburg. Following Burnside’s exit, a mediocre new commander, Joseph “Fighting Joe” Hooker, turned a sure victory into tragedy at Chancellorsville, continuing the Union’s woes and ensuring Robert E. Lee’s greatest triumph of the war. But the tide began to turn over the course of three days in July 1863, when the Union won a decisive victory on the battlefield of Gettysburg. Months later, Lincoln would give his historic address on this ground, honoring the fallen soldiers and strengthening the Union Army’s resolve to fight for a united and equal nation for all of its people. With brilliant insight, color, and detail, Catton interweaves thrilling narratives of combat with remarkable portrayals of politics and life on the home front. Glory Road is a sweeping account of extraordinary bravery and shocking incompetence during what were arguably the war’s darkest days.
