Book The 1st and 2nd Battalions The Sherwood Foresters Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment in the Great War

Download or read book The 1st and 2nd Battalions The Sherwood Foresters Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment in the Great War written by Col H. C. Wylly and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this history the two battalions are dealt with separately but the list of Honours and Awards combines both battalions. When war broke out the 1st Battalion was in Bombay and sailed for home on 3 Sep 1914, arriving on 2 October and joining the newly formed regular division, the 8th. They landed in France on 5 November 1914 taking part in the battles of Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Ridge and Loos. Both the regiment's VCs were won by the 1st Battalion, at Neuve Chapelle and during the Aubers Ridge battle. Subsequently the narrative describes the battalion's part on the Somme, at Third Ypres, at Villers Bretonneux and the Chemin des Dames in 1918, and the Second Battle of Arras. The 2nd Battalion in August 1914 was stationed in Sheffield, part of the 18th Brigade of the 6th Division which was widely dispersed with two brigades in Ireland and one in Northern Command. They landed in France in September 1914 and after taking part in the Battle of the Aisne moved north to the Ypres salient where the division stayed for the next thirteen months sustaining some 11,000 casualties before moving down to the Somme. The battalion fought at Lens in June/July 1917 suffering losses of 183 or a quarter of its trench strength, and it was also at Cambrai. Wylly’s is a factual, unembellished account avoiding dramatics. Casualty figures are given from time to time following actions with individual officers named, as are officers with incoming drafts. After the war a memorial tower was erected at the summit of Crich Cliff, near Ripley, to be seen for miles around. The account of its opening, on 6th August of some unspecified year is reproduced from the Derbyshire Advertiser: It commemorates 11,409 of the Regiment who died in the Great War and the 140,000 who served in its thirty-two battalions.

It is a remarkable campaign, overshadowed by the armies of the British and Americans in Northern Europe, and detailed here with precision and passion by one of France’s leading military minds.

Book The History of the Green Howards

Download or read book The History of the Green Howards written by Geoffrey Powell and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regimental histories abound, but few can be as stirring as this story of the fortunes of the famous Yorkshire-based Green Howards. Raised in 1688 in response to a call for loyal troops, the Green Howards have maintained their tradition of loyalty over the past 300 years winning many superb battle honours. Their history reflects that of the British Army as there is hardly a major campaign that this Regiment has not been involved in; the French Wars of 1697-1793, the American War of Independence, Crimean War, First and Second World Wars, service in Suez, Malaya, Northern Ireland, peacekeeping operations in Bosnia and the war in the Gulf. This fine book brings the story of one of Britain's finest regiments right up to date.

Book History of the Duke of Wellington OS Regiment 1st and 2nd Battalions 1881 1923

Download or read book History of the Duke of Wellington OS Regiment 1st and 2nd Battalions 1881 1923 written by C. D. Bruce and published by . This book was released on 2002-08 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1881 the 33rd (Duke of Wellington s) and the 76th Regiments of Foot were linked to form the 1st and 2nd Battalions The Duke of Wellington s Regiment, the only British regiment to be named after a commoner. It is a Yorkshire regiment and had its Depot in Halifax. The first two chapters in the book provide an historical outline of the raising of the 1st Battalion in 1702 and take its story through to 1923. When the Great War war broke out the battalion was in India (where it had arrived in 1905) in Lahore and it was one of eight regular battalions to remain in India throughout the war. The 2nd Battalion was raised as 76th Foot in 1787 (two other regiments with that number had previously been raised and disbanded) and the next two chapters give an historical outline of the early years of the battalion taking it up to the outbreak of the Great War when the battalion was stationed in Dublin, part of 13th Brigade, 5th Division. Apart from the last chapter on the Memorial Chapel and a couple of appendixes, the rest of this history recounts story of the 2nd Battalion on the Western Front, mainly by use of quotations from eyewitness accounts, letters, diaries and official documents supported by good maps. The battalion arrived in France on 16th August 1914 and within a short time it was in action at Mons (360 casualties), Le Cateau and the Retreat from Mons, then the Marne, the Aisne and so to Ypres. Here, on 11th November 1914 the Germans launched their final, desparate attack to break through to Ypres and in the fighting 2nd DW virtually eliminated the Fusilier battalion of the 2nd (Prussian) Guard Grenadier Regiment (4th Guard Brigade); that regiment s history put the Fusilier casualties at 15 officers and 500 men while 2nd DW themselves lost 400 officers and men. Again, at Hill 60 on 18th April 1915, in a successful assault on the high ground the battalion suffered 421 casualties, 15 of them officers. On 5th May the Germans attacked using poisonous gas (chlorine) and recaptured the lost ground, inflicting a further 350 casualties, catastrophic losses in just two, separate days fighting. In January 1916 the battalion was transferred to the 4th Division in which it served for the rest of the war. A good feature of this history is the recording by name of officers joining the battalion or leaving or becoming casualties, and the arrival of drafts with strengths. By the end of August 1915 the battalion had received drafts totalling 2,265 other ranks.
