Book History of St Paul and Vicinity Vol 2

Download or read book History of St Paul and Vicinity Vol 2 written by Henry A. Castle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of St. Paul and Vicinity, Vol. 2: A Chronicle of Progress and a Narrative Account of the Industries, Institutions and People of the City, and Its Tributary Territory A similar enlightened policy has dictated the opening, by the St. Paul board of education, of a continuation sch'ool for pupils under Six teen years of age who are compelled to work and who have not completed the grade course in the public schools. This is an important provision of the compulsory education law and its strict enforcement is essential to the protection of the working children. Under the proposed system the working children who come within the provisions of the law will be given certain hours each day in school in order to do the study equivalent to a completion of the grade course in the public schools. The cooperation of employers, by which the little toilers will not lose any of their wages while attending the school for a few hours each day, is an important feature of the plan and should be secured without difficulty. Both the children and their employers will derive ultimate benefit by compliance with the terms of the plan. It is unfortunate that children under sixteen years of age should be compelled to become wage earners, but the evils of the condition will be greatly lessened by successful conduct of the continuation school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of St. Paul and Vicinity, Vol. 3: A Chronicle of Progress and a Narrative Account of the Industries, Institutions and People of the City and Its Tributary Territory But his most conspicuous gift along these lines was that of half a mil lion dollars a few years ago to the Theological Seminary established here by Archbishop Ireland for the education of a progressive native priest hood. This endowment, which has since no doubt been supplemented by other large gifts as the seminary goes on rapidly expanding, was ex pressly donated by Mr. Hill in compliment to his wife. But it was given on conditions which testify both to the sterling patriotism and the prac tical foresightedness of the donor. At the dedicating services, before a vast congregation, embracing leading Catholic prelates from all parts of America, and Cardinal Satolli, Mr. Hill said in substance: The title deeds to this property specifically stipulate that whenever the principles of true Americanism, as now taught by Archbishop Ireland, shall cease to be promulgated in this institution, the property shall revert to my heirs or legal representatives.
