Book excerpt: History of Seyd Said, Sultan of Muscat is the account by Italian traveler Vincenzo Maurizi of his residence in the Sultanate of Oman in the early 19th century. Maurizi's entertaining and informative narrative is recognized as the first European book devoted entirely to Oman. Using the writings of Carsten Niebuhr (1733-1815) for historical background, the author bases his account on observations made in Oman in 1809-14. Maurizi claims that he served as physician to ruler Saʻid bin Sultan (reigned 1807-56), who seized power in a domestic coup. Saʻid's reign was one of internal dynastic stability, but marked by external threats from the Najd, the Arabian region from which the Wahhabis, followers of Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab (died 1826 or 1827), arose to spread their strict interpretation of Islam. Maurizi had access to many court dignitaries, including the ambassador of the Wahhabi sect, whom he interviewed in Muscat about his beliefs. He describes the politics of the country as well as the armed clashes with Wahhabi forces in which, as an officer in Sayyid Saʻid's forces, he took part. Maurizi was well acquainted with the country outside the capital, Muscat, and made ethnographic notes, "derived from my own personal survey, or in default of that, from the best living authorities which it was in my power to procure." Oman also confronted raids from neighboring shaykhdoms. Maurizi's nickname at court was "Shaik Mansur," or "victorious," a direct translation of his Italian first name. He also acquired the sardonic sobriquet Abu Midfaʻ (father of canons), after a ship under his command accidently opened fire on allied forces, killing several men. In his account of Maurizi's life, British scholar Robin Bidwell speculates that he may have been a spy for the French, reporting on Oman's alliance with the British East India Company and on the complex rivalries on the Arabian Peninsula and in the Persian Gulf region. Maurizi writes of himself that he was an "artificial diplomat." It is not known who translated the work from the Italian for publication in 1819 by John Booth in London.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First Book Devoted Exclusively to Oman (1819) With a New Introduction by Robin Bidwell Oman succeeded in maintaining a vigorous independence at the beginning of the nineteenth century when much of the Arab world was at least nominally subject to the Ottoman Sultan. This was only one of the facts that made it unique for it had also a distinctive local form of Islam, it was the only Arab state to rely upon the sea for its livelihood and the only Arab state to establish close relations with a European power. These assets, and in particular British support, were exploited by one of the most remarkable Arab rulers of the century, Sayyid Sacid bin Sultan who came to power in 1807 through murdering a usurping cousin. Ruling for half a century he carried out an expansionist policy in the Gulf and in East Africa where he laid the foundations of a state that his descendants were to rule until 1964. In addition to his great ability as a ruler, a Warrior and above all a trader, he was a man remarkable for his sense of justice, tolerance and humour. Sayyid Sa'id welcomed European visitors and one of these wrote the first book ever to be exclusively devoted to Muscat. Vincenzo Maurizi, an Italian, was nick-named Shaik Mansur by the ruler with whom he was closely associated as his personal physician and as the commander of his artillery, although he was denounced by a British Officer as a spy of Napoleon. His book, which strangely has never been reprinted since the first edition in 1819, gives a fascinating account of daily life in Muscat and of the personality of its Sultan. Dr Robin Bidwell, who has provided an introduction, is Secretary of the Middle East Centre at Cambridge University. He has also published Travellers in Arabia (1976) and The Two Yemens (1983) in addition to many articles on Southern Arabia, both eastern and western, in academic journals. Part of the Oleander Classics series, this title has been reproduced using the highest-quality modern scanning technology in order to keep this and other important works from the Press's 50-year history from going out of print. In this way, the invaluable resources provided by books in the series remain available for general readers, academics and other interested parties.

Book excerpt: Italian Literature before 1900 in English Translation provides the most complete record possible of texts from the early periods that have been translated into English, and published between 1929 and 2008. It lists works from all genres and subjects, and includes translations wherever they have appeared across the globe. In this annotated bibliography, Robin Healey covers over 5,200 distinct editions of pre-1900 Italian writings. Most entries are accompanied by useful notes providing information on authors, works, translators, and how the translations were received. Among the works by over 1,500 authors represented in this volume are hundreds of editions by Italy's most translated authors – Dante Alighieri, Machiavelli, and Boccaccio – and other hundreds which represent the author's only English translation. A significant number of entries describe works originally published in Latin. Together with Healey's Twentieth-Century Italian Literature in English Translation, this volume makes comprehensive information on translations accessible for schools, libraries, and those interested in comparative literature.

Book The Persian Gulf

Download or read book The Persian Gulf written by Sir Arnold Talbot Wilson and published by . This book was released on 1928 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Arnold Talbot Wilson (1884-1940) was a British colonial administrator, soldier, and politician. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1903 and served as an officer in the British Army in India. He was transferred to the Indian Political Department and subsequently sent to the Persian Gulf. Wilson was the British civil commissioner in Baghdad in 1918-20. Although he was credited with improving the country's administration, he was criticized for his violent repression of the 1920 Iraqi revolt against the British. At the 1919 Paris Peace Conference that followed World War I, he successfully recommended changing the Greek name "Mesopotamia" to the Arabic "Iraq." However, the British government ultimately rejected his view that Iraq should not be granted independence, and he was removed from his position. Wilson later became a member of Parliament. With the outbreak of World War II, he joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He served as a pilot officer and was killed in action in northern France. The Persian Gulf. An Historical Sketch from the Earliest Times to the Beginning of the Twentieth Century is a concise history of the region. Wilson begins with the writings of Greek, Roman, and Muslim geographers, followed by chapters on the arrival of European powers, beginning with the Portuguese, the British, and the Dutch. A later chapter discusses the growth of the British influence, starting in the 18th century. Other topics covered in the book are piracy, the slave trade, and the growth of Arab principalities.
