Book excerpt: In 1682, William Penn offered the "Free Society of Traders" a nearly twenty-thousand-acre tract of land made up from the then communities of Warwick, New Britain, and Hilltown. The area grew slowly and, in 1745, William Doyle applied for permission to operate an inn at a well-traveled crossroads. With the permission granted, Doyle's town was created. Spared destructive battles of the American Revolution, the town retained its rustic charm and appeal. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, Doylestown, as it had become known, had blossomed and was beginning to attract merchants and residents. It spent the next century somewhat in isolation until wealthy Philadelphians and New Yorkers "discovered" the borough in the 1930s, boasting of its abundant, beautiful, land and rich history. Doylestown is the first collection of images to document the history of the seat of Bucks County. The images contained in this collection were gathered primarily from local residents who, upon hearing of the pending publication, came forth with troves of photographs, stories, and memories of their hometown. Truly a community effort, Doylestown is a unique compilation of a storied past, a spirited present, and an exciting future.

Download or read book The American Counties written by Charles Curry Aiken and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012-12-21 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Americans give little thought to their county’s size, population, when it was created, or how its name came about. But such information can be very helpful to anyone, particularly researchers and genealogists, investigating local or state history. Drawing on information obtained from the 2010 Census, the 6th edition of The American Counties provides up-to-date data on each county’s: land area population county seat date of creation name origin dates of governmental organization, elimination, and re-creation This edition includes information on counties created since the previous edition was published as well as more precise “date of creation” details for many colonial counties. If a county is named for a geographical feature—river, mountain, lake, etc.—the origin of the name and the meaning of any Indian or foreign words is provided. For those counties that were named after a specific individual, a brief sketch of the person’s life is provided, including updated biographical information from previous editions. The Introduction has been expanded to address such topics as counties with similar names, persons who have more than one namesake county, the paucity of counties named for women, the practice of creating counties in uninhabited regions, and legislators naming counties for each other. At the request of many readers, the 6th edition contains new appendices ranking all counties nationally by population and area, as well as an appendix listing counties that have been eliminated. Containing information on all 3,143 counties and county equivalents (independent cities, parishes, boroughs, etc.) in the United States, the 6th edition of The American Counties is an essential resource for researchers looking for basic information on counties in the United States.

Old Graveyards And Cemeteries. In Deed Book B, page 140, under date of August 6, 1791, is recorded a deed by which Jacob Beeson and Elizabeth, his wife, conveyed to David Jennings, Jacob Murphy, Samuel Stevens, Jonathan Rowland and Peter Hook, trustees of the Methodist Episcopal church at Uniontown, and their successors in office, for the sum of five shillings, the lots laid off in " Jacob's Addition" known as Nos. 27 and 28, bounded on the south by Peter street, extending eastward and westward on said street one hundred and forty-five feet and running back one hundred and fifty feet. Most of the frontage of these lots was laid off for a burying ground and lots were sold for interment, and members of the foremost families of the town and vicinity and useful members of society were here buried under the shadow of the little church in which they loved to worship. Several ministers of the gospel here rest awaiting the resurrection morn, and several who fought in defense of their country sleep here. Doubtless this ground was used for burial purposes before the date of the deed as one tombstone still standing and in good condition testifies. The following is a very incomplete list of the persons buried in the old Methodist Episcopal burying ground, as it is impossible to identify those whose graves have no markers, and some of the stones have become entirely illegible, while others have been removed when the bodies were removed: A brief mention of some of the former citizens of the town in its early history is attached. Alexander, Anna, died March 25, 1833, in 69th year. Adams, John S., died October 20, 1843, age 19 months, 20 days. Addis% Elizabeth, died October 28, 1832, age 72 years.
