Book Identity Crises and Indigenous Religious Traditions

Download or read book Identity Crises and Indigenous Religious Traditions written by Elijah Obinna and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the complex identity crises among many Christians as they negotiate their new identities, religious ideas and convictions as both Christians and members of Nigerian-African societies of indigenous religious traditions and identities. Through an interdisciplinary interpretation of religious practices and educational issues in teaching and ritual training, the author provides tools to help analyse empirical cases. These include the negotiation processes among Christians, with focus on the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria (PCN) and members of the Ogo society within the Amasiri, Afikpo North Local Government Area, Ebonyi state, in South-eastern Nigeria. Identifying the power dynamic, identity, role and influence of indigenous religions on Christians and the Ogo society, this book reveals the limited interactions between many Christians and members of the Ogo society. Questions explored include: what makes the Ogo society an integral part of the socio-religious life of Amasiri and what powers and identity does it confer on the initiates; how is the PCN within Amasiri responding to the Ogo society through its religious practices such as baptism, confirmation, local auxiliary ministries and organisational structure; and how does the understanding and application of conversion within the PCN impact on its members’ response to the Ogo society? Demonstrating how complex religious identities and practices of Nigerian-African Christians can balance mission-influenced Christianity with indigenous religious traditions and identities, this book recognises the importance of appropriating the powers of indigenous cultures, ingenuity and creativity in the construction and preservation of community identities. As such, it will be of keen interest to scholars of Christian theology, indigenous religious practice and African lived religion.

Book excerpt: The history of St. Clements Church in El Paso, Texas, chronicles the sacred movement of God through generations of people who have powerfully experienced His presence. Follow this churchs story from humble beginnings in a dusty western outpost over a century ago, through decades of extraordinary growth and great social upheaval, to the renewal of the 1970s and the groundbreaking separation of the Episcopal and Anglican churches in North America. The Lord faithfully led this once small, insignificant group of believers to become one of the most dynamic Anglican churches in the country today, with broad missionary outreach and inner-city neighborhood ministries. The story of St. Clements is told through historical records and the testimonies of men and women, ministers and lay people, civic leaders and humble workers, and writers and musicians who served through many decades, all empowered by Gods Holy Spirit.

Book The Labour Church

  • Author : Jacqueline Turner
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2018-02-28
  • ISBN : 1786724022
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book The Labour Church written by Jacqueline Turner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Labour Church was an organisation fundamental to the British socialist movement during the formative years of the Independent Labour Party (ILP) and Labour Party between 1891 and 1914. It was founded by the Unitarian Minister John Trevor in Manchester in 1891 and grew rapidly thereafter. Its political credentials were on display at the inaugural conference of the ILP in 1893, and the Labour Church proved a formative influence on many pioneers of British socialism. This book provides an analysis of the Labour Church, its religious doctrine, its socio-political function and its role in the cultural development of the early socialist arm of the labour movement. It includes a detailed examination of the Victorian morality and spirituality upon which the life of the Labour Church was built. Jacqui Turner challenges previously held assumptions that the Labour Church was irreligious and merely a political tool. She provides a new cultural picture of a diverse and inclusive organisation, committed to individualism and an individual relationship with God. As such, this book brings together two major controversies of late-Victorian Britain: the emergence of independent working-class politics and the decline of traditional religion in a work which will be essential reading for all those interested in the history of the labour movement.

Download or read book International Handbook of Protestant Education written by William Jeynes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-13 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since their earliest days, institutions providing a Protestant education have always been respected and sought-after for their rigor and relative freedom from dogma—and despite today’s secularism and plurality, they remain so. This international handbook is the ultimate companion to protestant schooling worldwide. Its 39 chapters form the most comprehensive and wide-ranging treatment of the subject yet available, addressing Protestant education on all six inhabited continents and featuring the perspectives of leading authorities and public figures. The contributions cover in detail not only the facts and features of Protestant schooling in sundry nations, but also integrate a range of themes common to them all, themes so vital that they are of central concern to Christians around the world and of whatever denomination. Some of these topics are school choice, globalization, Bible pedagogy and character education, the fine arts, parental involvement, and the rise of Christianity in previously inaccessible locations such as China. The handbook’s stellar list of authors is a Who’s Who of authorities on the subject and includes a renowned American evangelical, a former historian of the US House of Representatives, and White House consultants responsible for framing legislation. The many contributors from outside the USA are leading academics conducting seminal research on numerous topics in the field. Both exhaustive and authoritative, The International Handbook of Protestant Educationwill be an invaluable asset to educators, ministers, parents, policy makers political leaders of any denomination—or none.
