This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 832 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of North Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, From Its First Settlement to the Present Time: With Family Registers It was not undertaken for want of other employment, or for pecuniary profit, but has been a severe tax upon the author's time, as well as purse. The work was commenced about twelve years since, without any reference to its publication, but merely for the gratification of a natural curiosity which must arise in the mind of any one who extends his thoughts beyond the peo ple and scenes immediately around him. None but those who have pre pared a work of this kind can have any idea of the amount of labor and time required in its execution. The author has devoted nearly all of his leisure time during the past eight years in examining the records of the town, as well as of the adjoin ing towns, also the Parish, Probate, and State records, and the ponderous volumes in the State Archives, beside the Registry of Deeds in several coun ties, muster rolls at the State House, to say nothing of the large number of town, church, and family histories that have been published, public ad dresses, sermons, orations, documents, plans, maps, etc. Many an hour has been spent in deciphering 'the almost unintelligible records of early times. Days and even weeks have been devoted to a care ful examination of files of newspapers or other publications, also in copying inscriptions on gravestones and monuments. The matter here embodied consists of a mass of facts, items, and figures, many of them gathered from a correspondence of upwards of twelve hun dred letters, as well as by a personal consultation with the people of the town. During the winter of 1860, while the author was engaged in copying and examining the early records at the State House, Hon. Edward Southworth, In 1862, a circular was issued to all those residing at a distance who would be likely to feel an interest in having a good work, requesting any informa tion that they might be able to give. At the same time a large number of letters were written to various persons concerning their records. From many the author received prompt, full, and satisfactory replies, while many others took no notice whatever of the same. Download or read book William Rimmer written by Dorinda Evans and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2022-12-05 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Rimmer (1816–1879) is arguably the first modernist American sculptor, although his inventive originality has not been fully acknowledged. Rimmer cultivated an art of ideas and personal expression whilst supporting himself as a physician and, later, as a teacher of art anatomy at the Cooper Union School of Design for Women in New York. Unlike his contemporaries, he advocated the creation of sculpture drawn entirely from the artist’s imagination, as opposed to antique archetypes or live models. In this way, he sought to reframe excellence in American art as something that must be found within, rather than derived from Europe. In this new monograph, the meaning of Rimmer’s works is for the first time considered from a combination of perspectives, such as close visual analysis (including X-ray and infrared), historical documentation, and social context. These are enriched with discussion of the artist’s own bipolar disorder, deeply-held spiritualism, and views on gender equality—considering women just as talented as men, he used naked male models in all-female classes long before his contemporaries, and produced an allegorical sculpture of fighting lions that criticized the tyranny of men over women. This book will be of great interest to academics, students, art museums, collectors, dealers, art historians, and members of the public with an affinity for Rimmer’s work. It will also appeal to those with a broader interest in American culture.

Download or read book Last to Leave the Field written by Timothy J. Orr and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revealing the mind-set of a soldier seared by the horrors of combat even as he kept faith in his cause, Last to Leave the Field showcases the private letters of Ambrose Henry Hayward, a Massachusetts native who served in the 28th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Hayward’s service, which began with his enlistment in the summer of 1861 and ended three years later following his mortal wounding at the Battle of Pine Knob in Georgia, took him through a variety of campaigns in both the Eastern and Western theaters of the war. He saw action in five states, participating in the battles of Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg as well as in the Chattanooga and Atlanta campaigns. Through his letters to his parents and siblings, we observe the early idealism of the young recruit, and then, as one friend after another died beside him, we witness how the war gradually hardened him. Yet, despite the increasing brutality of what would become America’s costliest conflict, Hayward continually reaffirmed his faith in the Union cause, reenlisting for service late in 1863. Hayward’s correspondence takes us through many of the war’s most significant developments, including the collapse of slavery and the enforcement of Union policy toward Southern civilians. Also revealed are Hayward’s feelings about Confederates, his assessments of Union political and military leadership, and his attitudes toward desertion, conscription, forced marches, drilling, fighting, bravery, cowardice, and comradeship. Ultimately, Hayward’s letters reveal the emotions—occasionally guarded but more often expressed with striking candor—of a soldier who at every battle resolved to be, as one comrade described him, “the first to spring forward and the last to leave the field.” Timothy J. Orr is an assistant professor of military history at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.
