Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Monmouth and Wales About this time, serious troubles arose between the settlers and the proprietors of the Plymouth Patent, which comprised, in addition to all the land in Monmouth and Wales, a large number of the townships lying east and west of the Kennebec river. Many of the early set tlers had taken up land under the supposition that they were free and, after expending years of hard labor on them, had been forced to relinquish them to the lawful, if not rightful, owners, without remuneration for the im provement they had effected. Others who had bought out the claims of the squatters at a fair price, were called upon to pay exorbitant sums for the lands that were all but worthless before the improvements were made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry of Monmouth: Or Memoirs of the Life and Character of Henry the Fifth, Vol. 1 of 2: As Prince of Wales and King of England By the standard of truth those delineations of Henry's character which have contributed to im mortalize our great historical dramatist. The Au thor, indeed, is willing to confess that he would gladly have withdrawn from the task of assaying the substantial accuracy and soundness of Shak speare's historical and biographical views, could he have done so safely and without a compromise of principle. He would have avoided such an inquiry, not only in deference to the acknowledged rule which does not suffer a poet to be fettered by the rigid shackles of unbending facts; but from a dis inclination also to interfere, even in appearance, with the full and free enjoyment of those exquisite scenes of humour, wit, and nature, in which Henry is the-hero, and his riotous, reckless companions are subordinate in dramatical excellence only to himself. The Author may also not unwillingly grant, that (with'the majority of those who give a tone to the form and pressure of the age) Shakspeare has done more to invest the character of Henry with a never-dying interest beyond the lot of ordinary monarchs, than the bare records of historical verity, could ever have effected. Still he feels that he had no alternative. He must either have ascertained the historical worth of those scenic representations, or have suffered to remain in their full force the deep and prevalent impressions, as to Henry's principles and conduct, which owe, if not theirorigin, yet, at least, much of their universality. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Every Inch a King: The Romance of Henry of Monmouth, Sometime Prince of Wales IT was the springtime, and France was arrayed in all her glory. The buds were swelling upon the noble trees, the early owers were peeping from the grass, and the birds were singing their sweetest songs to aid their wooing. Love was the burden of their melody, and as their notes rang out joyously in the early dawn, a young monk standing in the window of a stately castle on the coast of Normandy felt his heart throb in answer to their plea. Was not the whole world singing the same glad song? And why must he sti e it upon his lips and crush the pas sion which turned his blood to fire? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duke of Monmouth To the eye of the mountain-bred Scot, the display of fertility, of luxuriance, and of agricultural wealth, which the country soon presented far and near, had rather the character of a region of enchantment, such as he might have found in the gorgeous romances of the preceding century, than that of a soil made prolific by human hus bandry. The numerous sheep-pens in the fields on either side the road, the thick woods that clambered to the very summit of the neighbouring heights, the hep-gar dens, and extensive fields of grain that chequered the face of the surrounding lands; and diversity of scene through which the road conducted them, now Winding up a height overarched with thickest verdure, now lead ing down on a small cluster of farm - houses close nestling in a woody hollow, now offering a wide view of some highly cultivated champaign, now running through a sharp and narrow defile, - all afforded a continual sub ject of admiration to Mr. Fullarton and his children, and of silent satisfaction to his wife, who was herself a native of the country into which they were advancing.
