Book History of Michigan Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Michigan Classic Reprint written by Lawton T. Hemans and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Michigan The twofold phase of our government, state and federal, is familiar to us all. The desirability of a knowledge of the principles and institutions of state concern, as distinguished from those of a national character, is now quite generally admitted. Indeed, it is thought that a familiarity with the institutions common to our townships, counties, and the state, should precede the study of the more distant and complex institutions of the general government. It is like wise generally believed that in the study of history the analogy holds true, and that the youth, before he is required to learn and comprehend the great national and world wide movements of history, should be told the story of his own state. One of the essential equipments for good citizenship is a knowledge of that noble band of men and women who, as pioneers, felled the forests, made the homesteads, organ ized the townships and the counties, and laid the foundations of the commonwealth. With a thorough knowledge of the history of the state and the principles of its government, the youth is at least equipped to discharge intelligently those civic duties with which he is most intimately connected, while a desire for a knowledge of history and government in their higher and broader relations is also fostered. It is to fulfill this mission in Michigan that this little book has been prepared. It is dedicated to the boys and girls of Michigan, as it was inspired by the belief that their lives would reflect a higher standard of civic virtue if lived with an intimate acquaintance with those patriots and statesmen whose efforts have made for the state an honorable fame. There are gaps in the narration. Also some portions receive too extended consideration in proportion to the space bestowed on other topics of equal or perhaps greater importance. Again the authority for many statements is either inadequately stated or is omitted altogether. Every canon dear to the heart of the historical scholar of today has been either broken or ignored. In short, there is no fault herein that the author does not recognize and acknowledge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book History of the University of Michigan Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the University of Michigan Classic Reprint written by Elizabeth M. Farrand and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the University of Michigan This book has been written for those who have been, or are, or shall be connected with the University of Michigan. The attempt has been made to collect from many documents into one volume the story of the University, to put into a convenient and accessible shape what has been already written, and to gather also something from its traditional history, placing upon record what has hitherto remained only in memories which are now fast fading. It is greatly to be regretted that the men who were students of the University in its early days have given us no reminiscences of their college life, of its duties, its customs, its hardships, and its pleasures so different from those of modern college life. The author of this book is much indebted to some of the early graduates, and especially to Dr. George Pray, of the class of 1845, for assistance rendered; from them alone has it been possible to gather any knowledge of the customs of their time. By them alone, however, can the subject be adequately treated. The suggestion is offered that the classes which left the institution before the days of college papers and of class histories, should each have its historian, and that a determined effort should be made to collect reminiscences of college life in Ann Arbor. The University is not too young to number among her children, white-haired men. Many of the instructors and many of the students, who taught and studied here in the days when the number of instructors and students was very small, are silenced by death. Yet in 1884 no class fails to respond to the roll-call. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The University of Michigan Classic Reprint written by Wilfred Shaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Michigan One early June day some fourscore years ago, it was 1837 to be precise, a party of distinguished visitors arrived in what was then the little backwoods community of Ann Arbor. The interest of the loiterers at the country tavern and the corner grocery was no doubt aroused by their com ing, for Ann Arbor we may suppose was not different from other small places; and this curiosity could hardly have been lessened by the fact that the newcomers were all men who figured prominently in the affairs of the State, which had been admitted to the Union only four months before. Whatever the speculation aroused by the personnel of the party, however, the business that called them to Ann Arbor caused little comment, if we are to judge from contemporary reports. Yet this unpretentious gathering of notables was charged with the inauguration of what was to become one of the most significant developments in the history of American education, - the establishment and successful maintenance of a University by the people of a State. Book History of Michigan Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Michigan Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Charles Moore and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Michigan, Vol. 2 James Frederick Joy. The distinction of having been the prime factor in the building of more than sixteen hundred miles of railroad in Michigan alone is of itself sufficient to make the name of James F. Joy one of the most significant in the history of this state. From 1836 until his death in 1896, Mr. Joy was a resident of the city of Detroit. Beginning his career there as a struggling young attorney, he rose to be one of the foremost business men of the United States, a recognized authority on finance, and one of the ablest railroad managers of the middle west. His achievements both in his profession and in practical affairs is remarkable. With his great executive ability he combined attributes of character which marked him as one of the most distinguished of Michigan's citizens. It has been said of him that he was too honest to be politic, too conscientious to be sycophantic and that his practice of all times telling the truth often made enemies of small-minded men, but brought him the friendship, never violated, of the greatest individuals of his time. James Frederick Joy was born at Durham, New Hampshire, December 2, 1810, a son of James and Sarah (Pickering) Joy. His father was a blacksmith by trade, and at Durham manufactured scythes and also engaged in ship building. The first ancestor of the name was Thomas Joy, who left England about 1632, locating at Boston. The town records show him to have been a landholder at Boston in 1636. James Joy, the father, was a man of strong character, of much enterprise and originality, was a Federalist in politics, a Calvinist in religion, and a leader in both religious and civil life in his community. His character and example were influential in the lives of his children, and from him the great railroad builder and lawyer inherited some of his best native traits. The common schools of New England introduced James Frederick Joy to a knowledge of life, and he completed his education in an academy, a short distance from his home. He then took up teaching and with some assistance from his father finally entered upon a collegiate course, graduating at the head of his class at Dartmouth College, with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. From Dartmouth he went to Harvard College, and took up the study of law. His finances did not allow him to continue until graduation, and he supplemented his income by teaching in the academy at Pittfield, Massachusetts, and for a year as a tutor in Dartmouth College. Resuming his studies at Harvard, he completed the course within a year and was admitted to the bar at Boston. In September, 1836, Mr. Joy arrived at Detroit, and entered the law office of Hon. Augustus S. Porter, later United States senator from Michigan. In 1837 he opened a law office of his own, and became associated in practice with George F. Porter, who had a large acquaintance with prominent moneyed interests in this state and elsewhere. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
