Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the United States joined World War II in 1941, the men and women of Weber County heeded the call to fight for victory at home and overseas. Over 10,000 Northern Utahns served in the armed forces, while back at home, new military installations, such as Defense Depot Ogden and Hill Air Force Base, employed thousands more. Women's clubs held bond drives, high school students learned first aid and harvested crops, and children gathered scrap metal; it was a community-wide response that changed Weber County forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trails and Trailblazers By: Shirley Robertson Lee Following the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, this book provides a story of how Lunenburg County, a rural school district, in Southside Virginia transitioned - in the span of one hundred years - from a segregated to an integrated, unified system. The Lunenburg story is as important as that of its neighbor, Prince Edward County, although its transition is less dramatic. This story is part of what occurred in public education during this important chapter. As a life-long resident of Lunenburg County and former student attending segregated schools from the first to eleventh grade and an integrated school during her senior year, Shirley Robertson Lee offers a thoroughly researched and passionate study of public education and school desegregation. By the time segregated schools ended in Lunenburg County in the fall of 1969, it had been nearly fifteen years since America’s racially segregated school systems were found to be unconstitutional in the case of Brown v. Board of Education on May 1, 1954. The first totally integrated Lunenburg senior class graduated in spring of 1970. Shirley Robertson Lee is a member of that class. “Many people remember Brown v. Board of Education and think of that as the end of segregated schools in our country. The truth is, of course, infinitely more complicated. This book meticulously documents that transition and all that led up to it in one Virginia County. It is both scholarly and personal and will be of interest to educators and local government, but also to anyone who wants to understand the important history of mid-twentieth century America.” -STEPHANIE DEUTSCH, Author, You Need a Schoolhouse- “The telling of this story is important to Lunenburg County’s history; and I know that those who live here now, others who have journeyed from the County but stay connected, and others into the future will enjoy and learn from it. Shirley’s research was both thorough and very interesting in both the written word as well as her historical photograph collection. Well done and many thanks!” -STEPHEN S. ISRAEL, President, Lunenburg County Historical Society-

Book The History of Canada Series War in the St Lawrence

Download or read book The History of Canada Series War in the St Lawrence written by Roger Sarty and published by Penguin Canada. This book was released on 2012-04-17 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1942 to 1944, 15 German submarines destroyed or severely damaged 27 ships, including three Canadian warships, a U.S. Army troop transport, and the Newfoundland ferry Caribou. More than 250 lives were lost. It was the only battle of the twentieth century to take place within Canada’s boundaries, and the only battle to be fought almost exclusively by Canadian forces under Canadian, rather than alliance, high command. And for more than 40 years the battle was characterized as a Canadian defeat. But was it a defeat? Drawing on new material from wartime records—including ultra-top-secret Allied decryptions of German naval radio communications, Roger Sarty shows that Canada mounted a successful defence with far fewer resources and in the face of much greater challenges than previously known. He draws vivid pictures of the intense combat on Canada’s shores and the interplay of the St Lawrence battle with war politics in Ottawa, Washington and London. At the same time, he weaves a second story: how researchers reassembled the scattered war records in Canada, Britain, the United States and Germany and brought the long-forgotten battle to life for new generations of Canadians and international audiences.

Book A Biography of Robert Henry Winters

Download or read book A Biography of Robert Henry Winters written by Barry Cahill and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography is of Nova Scotian Robert Henry Winters (1910-1969) who was first elected to Parliament in 1945 and appointed to Cabinet by Prime Minister Louis St-Laurent in 1948. Between 1957 and 1965 Winters was one of Canada’s most prominent businessmen, running companies specializing in resource extraction and development. Returning to politics in 1965, he was again elected to Parliament and soon joined the Cabinet of Prime Minister Lester Pearson as minister of trade and commerce. Notably, Winters placed second to Pierre Trudeau in the vote to choose the new leader of Canada’s Liberal Party in 1968. Leaving politics once again and re-entering big business, Winters became president, and then chair of Brascan (now Brookfield Asset Management) before his unexpected death. This book will be a welcome read for anyone interested in Canadian politics, especially within the Liberal Party, Canadian business, and the interaction between the two.

Book Children of World War II

Download or read book Children of World War II written by Kjersti Ericsson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-08-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a hidden legacy of war that is rarely talked about: the children of native civilians and enemy soldiers. What is their fate? This book unearths the history of the thousands of forgotten children of World War II, including its prelude and aftermath during the Spanish Civil War and the Allied occupation of Germany. It looks at liaisons between German soldiers and civilian women in the occupied territories, and the Nazi Lebensborn program of racial hygiene. It also considers the children of African-American soldiers and German women. The authors examine what happened when the foreign solders went home and discuss the policies adopted towards these children by the Nazi authorities as well as postwar national governments. Personal testimonies from the children themselves reveal the continued pain and shame of being children of the enemy.Case studies are taken from France, Germany, the Netherlands, Czechoslovakia, Norway, Denmark and Spain.
