In this collection of essays, he argues that it is California’s heartland and economic hub. In addition, the valley has produced a crop of gifted writers. These nineteen essays range from reminiscences of childhood and adolescence to a portrait of Mexican-Americans and their position in the Valley’s society to a moving essay about having the author’s aging father come to live with the family. Even if you have never lived in the Valley, reading this book will give you an entirely new perspective the next time you drive into it.

Book excerpt: "Shunning boosterism, this history of Stockton California seeks to present a critical and candid account of a tent city during the Gold Rush that grew into a metropolis larger than either Pittsburgh or Cincinnati. It begins with the Yokut and Miwok tribes of the San Joaquin and moves forward to the present day, highlighting along the way the city's "golden age" during the Roaring Twenties and its unique, even crucial, roles during the Civil War, the Great War, and the Second World War. It does not ignore movers and shakers liek city manager Walter Byron Hogan, local industrialists such as Tillie Lewis, and real estate developers such as the billionaire Alex Spanos. However, it also tells the stories of ordinary citizens who did extraordinary things -- a transvestite woman who worked for a local newspaper during the Gilded Age and stowed away on a troop ship to the Philippines in 1898, a high school teacher who refused to abandon her Japanese students when they were imprisoned in 1942 at the county fairgrounds and was later honored by the Emperor of Japan, a brilliant Jewish humanities professor who inspired som many of his students, including jazz composer Dave Brubeck. Seeking to be inclusive, this history takes pains to acknowledge the contributions of Native Americans, Chinese, and Italian immigrants, Filipino/as, Japanese Americans, African Americans, Mexican Americans, Sikhs, gays and lesbians, and women. Everyone is given a voice." -- cover, p.[4].

Book Garden of the World

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly a century before it became known as Silicon Valley, the Santa Clara Valley was world-renowned for something else: the succulent fruits and vegetables grown in its fertile soil. In Garden of the World, Cecilia Tsu tells the overlooked, intertwined histories of the Santa Clara Valley's agricultural past and the Asian immigrants who cultivated the land during the region's peak decades of horticultural production. Weaving together the story of three overlapping waves of Asian migration from China, Japan, and the Philippines in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Tsu offers a comparative history that sheds light on the ways in which Asian farmers and laborers fundamentally altered the agricultural economy and landscape of the Santa Clara Valley, as well as white residents' ideas about race, gender, and what it meant to be an American family farmer. At the heart of American racial and national identity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries was the family farm ideal: the celebration of white European-American families operating independent, self-sufficient farms that would contribute to the stability of the nation. In California by the 1880s, boosters promoted orchard fruit growing as one of the most idyllic incarnations of the family farm ideal and the lush Santa Clara Valley the finest location to live out this agrarian dream. But in practice, many white growers relied extensively on hired help, which in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was largely Asian. Detailing how white farmers made racial and gendered claims to defend their dependence on nonwhite labor, how those claims shifted with the settlement of each Asian immigrant group, and how Chinese, Japanese, and Filipinos sought to create their own version of the American dream in farming, Tsu excavates the social and economic history of agriculture in this famed rural community to reveal the intricate nature of race relations there.
