Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lee: The Centennial Celebration and Centennial History of the Town of Lee, Mass The idea of celebrating the Centennial Anniversary of the incorporation of Lee, so far as is known, originated with the late Rev. Nahum Gale, D.D., pastor of the Congregational church, who said, with his characteristic humor, to the editor of The Gleaner, "In 1877 occurs the Centennial of Lee, and you must show for it." The editor obeyed the injunction of his pastor, and the subject was duly ventilated in the village paper. As this is an era of Centennials, it was not difficult to create a public sentiment in favor of this local celebration, though, we are sorry to add, the author of the idea did not live to participate in the social Reunion of the town of Lee, which he had anticipated with so much pleasure, and of which, had his life been spared, he would have been the soul. It is due to Doctor Gale to say, that the enterprise was carried through substantially in the manner in which he blocked it out, when he first made the suggestion. At the annual town meeting held in Lee, April 3, 1876, the following vote was passed on the article in the warrant: "To see what action the town will take with reference to the celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the incorporation of the town." "Voted, that the town celebrate its Centennial in an appropriate manner, and that a Committee of Thirteen be appointed to make all necessary arrangements to carry this vote into effect." Book Jean Toomer and the Terrors of American History

Download or read book Jean Toomer and the Terrors of American History written by Charles Scruggs and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean Toomer's Cane was the first major text of the Harlem Renaissance and the first important modernist text by an African-American writer. It powerfully depicts the terror in the history of American race relations, a public world of lynchings, race riots, and Jim Crow, and a private world of internalized conflict over identity and race which mirrored struggles in the culture at large. Toomer's own life reflected that internal conflict, and he has been an ambiguous figure in literary history, an author who wrote a text that had a tremendous impact on African American authors but who eventually tried to distance himself from Cane and from his identification as a black writer. In Jean Toomer and the Terrors of American History, Charles Scruggs and Lee VanDemarr examine original sources—Toomer's rediscovered early writings on politics and race, his extensive correspondence with Waldo Frank, and unpublished portions of his autobiographies—to show how the cultural wars of the 1920s influenced the shaping of Toomer's book and his subsequent efforts to escape the racial definitions of American society. That those definitions remain crucial for American society even today is one reason Toomer's work continues to fascinate and to influence contemporary writers and readers.

King John, a history play by William Shakespeare, dramatises the reign of John, King of England (ruled 1199–1216), son of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine and father of Henry III of England. It is believed to have been written in the mid-1590s but was not published until it appeared in the First Folio in 1623. Life of William Shakespeare is a biography of William Shakespeare by the eminent critic Sidney Lee. This book was one of the first major biographies of the Bard of Avon. It was published in 1898, based on the article contributed to the Dictionary of National Biography. William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. Sir Sidney Lee (1859 – 1926) was an English biographer and critic. He was a lifelong scholar and enthusiast of Shakespeare. His article on Shakespeare in the fifty-first volume of the Dictionary of National Biography formed the basis of his Life of William Shakespeare. This full-length life is often credited as the first modern biography of the poet.

Book Community Boundaries and Border Crossings

Download or read book Community Boundaries and Border Crossings written by Kristen Lillvis and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization and transnationalism have reshaped our communities and their borderlines. Communities exceed fixed boundaries, existing instead in the liminal spaces where narratives intersect, clash, or cooperate. These liminal spaces—physical and virtual, local and global—provide opportunities for diversifying discussions on diaspora, cultural hybridity, and ethnic identity. Ethnic women writers make significant contributions to this dialogue regarding the reconfiguration of people and their perimeters. A multigenre and multicultural text, Community Boundaries and Border Crossings explores the novels, short stories, essays, autobiographies, testimonios, plays, poems, and hybrid poetics of established and emerging ethnic women writers. This collection of critical essays highlights the new zones of cultural contact and exchange that are defining the twenty-first century. Each chapter reflects an awareness of cultural changes and challenges, engaging readers in a richly productive conversation concerning the interconnectedness of border crossings and community boundaries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lee's Centennial: An Address Having occasion once to refer in discussion to certain of the founders of our Massachusetts Commonwealth, I made the assertion that their force lay in character; and I added that in saying this I paid, and meant to pay, the highest tribute which in my judgment could be paid to a community or to its typical men. Quite a number of years have passed since I so expressed myself, and in those years I have grown older - materially older; but I now repeat even more confidently than I then uttered them, these other words The older I have grown and the more I have studied and seen, the greater in my esteem, as an element of strength in a people, has Character become, and the less in the con duct of human affairs have I thought of mere capacity or even genius. With Character a race will become great, even though as stupid and unassimilating as the Romans; without Character, any race will in the long run prove a failure, though it may number in it individ uals having all the brilliancy of the Jews, crowned with the genius of Napoleon. Book Lincoln and Lee

Download or read book Lincoln and Lee written by Smith D. Fry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln and Lee: A Patriotic Story From the dawn of the day when the curtain was raised on the stage of the first theatre in this country, each, every and all playwrights and play-writers have sought and striven in vain for the theme, the suggestion or the story from which might be developed and produced the outstanding and the everlasting Great American Play. George Washington Custis Lee and William Henry Fitzhugh Lee, first and second-born sons of Robert E. Lee, were present, and in their youthful ways participated in the great reception at Arlington Mansion; a reception concerning which there has been nothing recorded heretofore; a reception which surely deserves a paragraph or a page in the history of our country. From the lips of those participants in the reception the narrator obtained vivid informative descriptions of the event. The second son, known at home as "Rooney," remembered a great deal, in fact nearly all of the utterances of his grand-father, whom he loved and almost idolized. While "Rooney" was a Member of the House of Representatives in Washington he was frequently a dinner guest or an evening caller at the home of the writer. He spoke unreservedly and with wonderful loving appreciation of the heroism of his elder brother during the tragedy of the Civil War. But, concerning the silent suffering of Charlotte Wickham, his beloved wife, "Rooney" was surely ignorant entirely. General Custis Lee absolutely commanded every member of the family to be silent concerning his own unexampled self-sacrifices. The only thing that he would say to the folks at home, or to trusted friends, was that "General Ould had charge of the exchange of prisoners, and I did have some conversation with him about that matter." General Custis Lee never spoke of Charlotte, nor allowed any conversation concerning that almost unknown heroine, except on one exceptional occasion when he described to the writer the scene of his visit to inform Charlotte that he was going to visit "Rooney" in prison; and even then the marvelous man was unemotional, apparently, as he quietly said: "That was the last time that I saw Charlotte. I did not realize then that she was really dying, even as she gave me a farewell smile and waved her hand so cheerfully. I understood her tears, but I did not understand her physical condition."
