Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few American cities can claim a firefighting history as rich as that of New Jersey's capital. Trenton's first volunteer fire company was organized in 1747 and was followed by more than a dozen other volunteer engine, hose, and hook and ladder companies that protected Trenton until 1892. They were replaced by paid firefighters staffing six engines and two ladders. As the city grew into a major industrial center, the fire department grew with it. Trenton Firefighting tells and honors the story of Trenton's firefighters--both volunteer and paid--and the blazes they have battled, including the 1885 fire that gutted the New Jersey State House, the 1915 conflagration that destroyed the insulated wire mill of John A. Roebling's Sons Company (builder of the Brooklyn Bridge), and the 1975 inferno that razed the historic Trenton Civic Center.

In 1889, he formed the Pittsburgh Company to create a town south of the Connoquenessing Creek near the village of Hazel Dell. Local farm properties were purchased, and the town quickly began to take shape. Along with houses, the first major building was the Hotel Oliver. The Ellwood Short Line and later the Beaver and Ellwood Railroads were built to meet the demands of the growing steel industry. In 1891, the Ellwood Shafting and Tube Company was founded, producing the first seamless steel tubing and establishing Ellwood City as the "birthplace of the seamless tube industry." Mills, financial institutions, stores, schools, churches, civic organizations, and building trades thrived as construction in the new town grew.

Download or read book Indiana Township written by Erica Alderdice Birkner and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1805, Indiana Township became the fourth township formed in Allegheny County. The earliest settlers, Jacob Huddle (Hodil) and Henry Strohm, arrived from Germany in 1798. The township was mainly rural when it was first settled, but as time progressed, the inevitable coal culture began. Coal mining was ideal for three main reasons: the rich coal deposits found within the landscape, the vast array of rail systems, and proximity to the Allegheny River. Important areas in the community include the Singing Winds site of the Council of the Three Rivers American Indian Center, the Mary Flinn Lawrence Estate (commonly referred to as Hartwood Acres), the Harmarville Rehabilitation Center, Consulate Healthcare, and Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve (currently in Fox Chapel Borough but formerly in Indiana Township), which is currently home to the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania. The famous stage actress Faye Templeton made Indiana Township her home for a time at Wunnahunny Farm, now called Humess Farm.

Book excerpt: Founded in 1697 as Maidenhead, the Township of Lawrence was renamed in 1816 in honor of naval hero Capt. James Lawrence, who commanded the frigate Chesapeake during the War of 1812. Situated in the heart of Mercer County, the township has served as a stopping point along several transportation routes, including road, rail, and canal, linking New York and Philadelphia. During the 1800s, the town saw the construction of the Delaware and Raritan Canal and two railways, including the Camden & Amboy Railroad, within its borders. Once an agricultural town, Lawrence grew during the 20th century from a village of about 1,000 residents to a thriving suburb of the state capital with a population of almost 30,000. Along the way, the township became the home of multinational corporations, the Lawrenceville School, and Rider University. The images featured in this book tell the story of how a growing population created a thriving community through educational institutions, religion, social endeavors, and public service.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the development of photography in the mid-nineteenth century, the camera has been used as a tool of both discovery and preservation. Photographs bring alive our picture of the past and can open a floodgate of memories and nostalgia or inspire curiosity and a sense of history. Collected in this delightful visual history are over 200 photographs, which bring to life the rich and diverse history of Lawrence Township, New Jersey, from the Victorian era to the Great Depression. Some of the best and most telling images are those which simply give us a picture of "how things used to be," which seem to have frozen for posterity a moment of a certain way of life, which has long since disappeared. I n this exploration of daily life throughout Lawrence Township we see a barge landing at Port Mercer, a blacksmith shoeing a horse in Slackwood, people from all walks of life at work and play. In the faces of these people we can see how a strong community spirit helped Lawrentians to adapt to the changes of the twentieth century.

It leads the reader on a search for its original owner and maker. Following a sometimes elusive trail, the author reconstructs the history of the sword that reveals the Revolution often as a civil war between patriots and loyalists. The story of the sword details its eighteenth-century social meanings, its craftsmanship, the symbolism of its designs, and its subsequent celebration in Fourth of July ceremonies, art, song, and popular literature. The sword as material culture exemplifies the complex and trying times of the American Revolution.
