Book History of Kentucky Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Kentucky Classic Reprint written by Elizabeth Shelby Kinkead and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Kentucky In the preparation of this book, an attempt has been made to relate the events of practical, everyday life, in such a manner as to make the study of the history of our State a pleasure to the pupil. While adhering to facts as closely as they could be ascertained, the aim has been that the whole shall entertain as a connected story. Special effort has been made to portray the spirit of the Kenluckians, in order that the student may understand and revere the people from whom he is sprung. To this end, more space has been given to their characteristics as indicated by tales of particular acts, than to the statistics of battles in which they have taken part. As this is a narration of the life of a State, and as the connection of one incident with another is of more importance in a work of this kind than the grouping of kindred topics, the chronological order of development has been followed. The subject naturally divides itself into five clearly marked periods. And these lend themselves readily to important subdivisions. That portion of the history which extends to the close of the War of 1812 belongs to the poetic stage in the States life; and that which follows, to the prose stage. Book Stories of Old Kentucky Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of Old Kentucky Classic Reprint written by Martha Grassham Purcell and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Old Kentucky To be easily assimilated, our mental food, like our physical food, should be carefully chosen and attractively served. The history of the "Dark and Bloody Ground" teems with adventure and patriotism. Its pages are filled with the great achievements, the heroic deeds, and the inspiring examples of the explorers, the settlers, and the founders of our state. In the belief that a knowledge of their struggles and conquests is food that is both instructive and inspiring, and with a knowledge that a text on history does not always attract, the author sets before the youth of Kentucky these stories of some of her great men. This book is intended as both a supplementary reader and a text, for, though in story form, the chapters are arranged chronologically, and every fact recorded has been verified. Thanks are due to the many friend who have granted access to papers of historical value, to many others who have assisted in making this book a reality, and especially to my husband, Dr. Clyde Edison Purcell, for his valuable suggestions, careful criticisms, and untiring cooperation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Kentucky In 1788 the savage Indians roamed almost at will all over the territory now known as Kentucky. In 1792 Kentucky was admitted as a State of the Union. Nothing in the history of this country, and perhaps of the world, shows such rapid development of a people in founding settlements and making homes for their families. It seems almost like a fairy tale. It is safe to say that no State in the American Union has had such a unique history as Kentucky. It has no parallel. And this progress was accomplished by the most fearful sacrifices, the most heroic actions, and the history of it all is written in blood. All things considered, there is no population similar to the people who accomplished these results. Tennessee was very much like Kentucky, and it is to be hoped that some of her sons will put in perma nent and compact form a history of her achievements as I am trying to do for my native State. It goes without saying that the Kentuckians have always been considered a peculiar people, and wherever they are found they still manifest the characteristics of their ancestors. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Kentucky, Vol. 1 of 5 The present work is the result of consultation and cooperation. Those engaged in its composition have had but one purpose, and that was to give to the people of Kentucky a social and political account of their state. Based on contemporaneous history, as nearly as the accomplishment of such an undertaking were possible. It has not been the purpose of those who have labored in concert to follow any line of precedent. While omitting no important event in the history of the state, there has been a decided inclination to rather stress those events that have not hitherto engaged the attention of other writers and historians, than to indulge in a mere repetition of that which is common knowledge. How far they have succeeded in this purpose a critical public must determine. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Pioneer Kentucky The history or pioneer kentucky is submitted to the reader with many misgivings on the part of its author. As the work has progressed he has come to realize more and more clearly the greatness of the under taking and his own deficiencies as a historian. Seven years ago, when this little book was begun, he had, if the truth be told, but scant suspicion of either. Perhaps the only good thing that can be said of it is, that the author has searched diligently for the truth and told it without prejudice when he found it. Download or read book History of Kentucky Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Lewis Collins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Kentucky, Vol. 2 Tan late H. P. Peers, of the city of Maysville, laid the foundation for the work which is now presented to the reading community. Mr. Peers designed it to be simply a small Gazetteer of the State; and had collected, and partially arranged for publication, the major part of the materials, comprising a description of the towns and counties. Upon his de cease, the materials passed into the hands of the Author, who determined to remodel them, and make such additions as would give permanency and increased value to the work. He has devoted much labor to this object; but circumstances having rendered its publication necessary at an earlier day than was contemplated, some errors may have escaped, which more time, and a fuller investigation would have enabled him to detect. Serious obstacles have been encountered, in the preparation of the Biographical Sketches. Many of those which appear in the work, were prepared from the personal recollections of the Author; while others have been omitted, because he did not know to whom he could apply for them, or having applied, and in some instances repeatedly, failed in procuring them. This is his apology, for the non-appearance of many names in that department, which are entitled to a distinguished place in the annals of Kentucky. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Kentucky: From Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time There are but few persons in this country who have not, at some time or other, felt the want of an accurate, well written, concise, yet clear and reliable history of their own or some other state. The want here indicated is now about being sup plied; and, as the task of doing so is no light or superficial one, the publishers have given into the hands of the two gentlemen whose names appear in the title-page, the work of preparing a series of cabi net histories, embracing a volume for each state in the Union. Of their ability to perform this well, we need not speak. They are no strangers in the literary world. What they undertake the public may rest assured will be performed thoroughly, and that no sectarian, sectional, or party feelings will bias their judgment, or lead them to violate the integrity of history. Download or read book The Story of Kentucky Classic Reprint written by Emma M. Connelly and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Kentucky The Story of Kentucky is. No less exact history because of its somewhat romantic air. Where a character hitherto unknown in history is introduced, it has always been drawn from real life, with only such unimportant changes as name, residence, and the occasional borrowing of incident from the lives of others among the great crowd of unknown and unsung. And, in a certain sense, are not these as much a part of their times and country as those whom ambition and self-assertion, as often as excep tional merit, have served to bring into prominence? There are shadows but none unwarranted by the truth as I have seen it, and none questioned by the two historical authorities who care' fully examined the manuscript and proofs - one a literary mem ber of the State Historical Society at Louisville, the Filson Club. I had no thought of writing a Preface it seems a rather per sonal, egotistic proceeding; but, since I am requested to write one, I might as well speak the thoughts that are in my mind, and express my pleasure in the recent renewal of literary inter est in Kentucky, even though that means a good deal of criticism, just and unjust. Since the passing away of the pic turesque pioneer with his tales-of adventure, Kentucky seems to have presented little temptation to the poet, dramatist and story-writer. And the flying tourist scans the uninviting fields along his way-(especially certain sections of Eastern Ken tucky) - in cherished ignorance of the fact that he sees no more of the real Kentucky than he sees of great cities under similar circumstances. The typical Kentuckian is scarcely less averse to the railroad as a feature of his landscape than Ruskin, and is far more active in keeping it out. His home is not on the highway, but hidden away among clustering forest trees. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A History of the Commonwealth of Kentucky Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Commonwealth of Kentucky Classic Reprint written by Mann Butler and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Commonwealth of Kentucky The first and most important inquiry respecting any history of social transactions is, its impartial truth. In order to answer this question, two others present themselves for examination. First, what have been the opportunities of accurate information enjoyed by the author? and secondly, how faithfully has he availed himself of his opportunities? The latter enquiry must be left to every reader; the author's protestations neither shall, nor ought to interfere with the answer. To the former, he will answer most unreservedly. The author has been no inattentive observer of public events in Kentucky, from his migration to the State in 1806; nor has he been destitute of intercourse with public characters. His curiosity, he may add, his heart, was early engaged in the story of Kentucky heroism, hardship, and enterprise. Nor during twenty-eight years' residence in the bosom of the State, has he felt his interest lessen in the fame and the fortunes of his adopted commonwealth. Still the author places the claims of his history to the public attention on a basis higher, than any personal intercourse he may have enjoyed, at the late period of his removal to the west. It is on a body of private papers belonging to some of the principal actors in Kentucky history. These have come into his possession from numerous sources in the most cheering and friendly manner. In the first place are the papers of Gen. George Rogers Clark; these contain a memoir by the great western hero, of his public services, from 1775 to 1779. These periods embrace the most interesting epochs; the papers also include an interesting correspondence with Patrick Henry and Jefferson, the early and distinguished Governors of Virginia, as with many military officers in the western country. These documents are now, after more than the lapse of half a century, for the first time submitted to the public. To the McAfee papers, preserved by Gen. Robert B. McAfee, the author has had full access. They form a part of the records of Providence church, the first established in Kentucky; and embrace the adventures of that enterprising and bold family of men from 1773 to the final settlement of the family in peace and in the plenty of Kentucky. In addition to these almost untouched mines of western history, and memorial of Kentucky story, the author has, by the liberality of Colonel Charles S. Todd, John J. Crittenden, and Nathaniel Hart, Esqrs., been favored with the Shelby, Innes, and Floyd papers. Messrs. Thomas and Edmund Rogers, H. Marshall, Esq., judges Rowan, Underwood, and Pirtle, Hon. H. Clay, and Jas. Guthrie, Dr. D. Drake, of Cincinnati, Messrs. John and James Brown, and Gov. Pope, have all most freely and kindly contributed every thing in their power.
