This book was released on 1933-12-15 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of economic documents resumes the story of the development of Canada as told by contemporary sources. Newspaper accounts of economic forces and factors, contemporary writings by statesmen and business men, poems depicting current situations, official documents—all have been included. The volume divides the period into two eras, 1783-1850 and 1850-85. The basis of classification of entries is by topics and geographic sections. It is hoped that the material which follows will amplify and illustrate the blend of materialistic and non-materialistic factors which has determined the nature of Canadian history and will allow students in Canadian universities to study with some degree of fullness the development of the economic institutions of their native land.

Book The Thousandth Man

Download or read book The Thousandth Man written by Barry Cahill and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James McGregor Stewart (1889-1955) was perhaps the foremost Canadian corporate lawyer of his day. He was also an appellate counsel, venture capitalist, Conservative Party fundraiser, bibliographer of Rudyard Kipling, and sometime university teacher of classics. A leader of the bar in the inter-war period, he was the first Maritimer to serve as president of the Canadian Bar Association. He distinguished himself mainly in constitutional cases before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. During his career, Stewart was also head of the leading law firm in eastern Canada (now Stewart McKelvey Stirling Scales), director and vice-president of the Royal Bank of Canada, and senior counsel to the Royal Commission on Dominion-Provincial Relations. Above all, Stewart was committed to the idea of law as a truly learned profession and to the bar as the most important legal institution. To this day, no lawyer has held such prestige and power both within and outside Atlantic Canada; in his time he was the only Maritime lawyer who gained full acceptance by every branch of the Canadian establishment. Thematic rather that chronological in approach, this fascinating legal biography provides both a history of a uniquely Canadian career and an interpretation of its significance for Stewart's time and ours.

Book Old and New World Highland Bagpiping

Download or read book Old and New World Highland Bagpiping written by John G. Gibson and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2002-05-22 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work is the result of over thirty years of oral fieldwork among the last Gaels in Cape Breton, for whom piping fit unself-consciously into community life, as well as an exhaustive synthesis of Scottish archival and secondary sources. Reflecting the invaluable memories of now-deceased new world Gaelic lore-bearers, John Gibson shows that traditional community piping in both the old and new world Gàihealtachlan was, and for a long time remained, the same, exposing the distortions introduced by the tendency to interpret the written record from the perspective of modern, post-eighteenth-century bagpiping. Following up the argument in his previous book, Traditional Gaelic Bagpiping, 1745-1945, Gibson traces the shift from tradition to modernism in the old world through detailed genealogies, focusing on how the social function of the Scottish piper changed and step-dance piping progressively disappeared. Old and New World Highland Bagpiping will stir controversy and debate in the piping world while providing reminders of the value of oral history and the importance of describing cultural phenomena with great care and detail.

Book HIST OF INVERNESS COUNTY NOVA

Download or read book HIST OF INVERNESS COUNTY NOVA written by J. L. Macdougall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Inverness County, Nova Scotia Our principal aim was to perpetuate the names and memories of the brave, intrepid men and women to whom we are indebted for the opening up and reclaiming from the bondage of the wilderness of this favored region of fine and free country. The lives of people in the woods are usually uneventful; but their noble sacrifices have eternal life. Matter for ordinary history was not likely to be abundant here What little there was could not readily be found, because of the dearth of original records and the death of the old people. We know that our haphazard endeavour can only be remarkable for its pathetic failure' and defects. Yet, we indulge the hope that even our poor attempt may move abler pens to cure those defects in days to come. For ourselves we can only say that, in the untoward conditions, we did our little best, and the best can do no more. Book Primary Sources in Canadian Working Class History 1860 1930

Download or read book Primary Sources in Canadian Working Class History 1860 1930 written by Russell G. Hann and published by Kitchener, Ont. : Dumont Press. This book was released on 1973 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " The work of four young historians, Primary Sources in Canadian Working Class History: 1860-1930, was months in preparation. It led its compilers thousands of miles across the North American continent. Unwilling to leave a single stone unturned or a local historical society undisturbed in their quest for source materials on the Canadian working class, they braved drunken drivers, motor accidents, the rare librarian full of wrath, archival dust in near lethal doses, and the annual meeting of the Canadian Historical Association in order to bring you this scintillating book. No effort has been spared to make this bibliography first-rate. From the archives to the print shop the compilers were with this project longer than anyone cares to remember. Advance notices have been extremely warm." –Publisher
