Book Ruling Through Education

Download or read book Ruling Through Education written by Tim Allender and published by Sterling Publishers Pvt. Ltd. This book was released on 2006 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the history of colonial education in the Punjab, the large province of Hindustan divided today between India and Pakistan, this book argues that the British-controlled system of colonial education in Hindustan failed well before the national movement challenged foreign educational practice in the early twentieth century. Drawing on extensive archival research in Great Britain, India and Pakistan, Allender shows how the early ideas of British officials generated a highly imaginative village system of schooling. Attempting to accommodate local language and religious sensitivities, this broad-based scheme offered possibilities to improve the lot of village boys. The revolt of 1857, and a well-meaning crusade against female infanticide, prompted officials to drop this scheme and to content themselves with city based schools. Christian missionary tensions with the government over their evangelising agenda also meant that their focus on poor students was limited to a mere 17 years. These developments helped to create a strong indigenous voice for educational innovations and change, notably represented in the Arya Samaj. In 1882, the Hunter Commission marked a recognition over the previous 30 years made it impossible for them to reach the general population with an effective European-led scheme of education.

Book Liberal Education and Its Discontents

Download or read book Liberal Education and Its Discontents written by Shashikala Srinivasan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What explains the peculiar trajectory of the university and liberal education in India? Can we understand the crisis in the university in terms of the idea of education underlying it? This book explores these vital questions and traces the intellectual history of the idea of education and the cluster of concepts associated with it. It probes into the cultural roots of liberal education and seeks to understand its scope, effects and limits when transplanted into the Indian context. With an extensive analysis of the philosophical writing on the idea of university and education in the West and colonial documents on education in India, the book reconstructs the ideas of Gandhi and Tagore on education and learning as a radical alternative to the inherited, European model. The author further reflects upon how we can successfully deepen liberal education in India as well as construct alternative models that will help us diversify higher learning for future generations. Lucid, extensive and of immediate interest, this book will be useful for scholars and researchers interested in the history and philosophy of education and culture, social epistemology, ethics, postcolonial studies, cultural studies and public policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Punjabiyat? What are the different notions of Punjab? This volume analyses these ideas and explores the different aspects that constitute Punjab as a region conceptually in history, culture, and practice. Each essay examines a different Punjabi culture—language-based and literary; religious and those that define a 'community'; rural, urban, and middle class; and historical, contemporary, and cosmopolitan. Together, these essays unravel the complex foundations of Punjabiyat. The volume also shows how the recent history of Punjab—partition, aspirations of statehood, and a large and assertive diaspora—has had a discernible impact on the region's scholarship. Departing from conventional studies on Punjab, this book presents fresh perspectives and new insights into its regional culture.

Book The Culture and Civilisation of Ancient India in HIstorical Outline

Download or read book The Culture and Civilisation of Ancient India in HIstorical Outline written by D D Kosambi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1965, The Culture and Civilisation of Ancient India in Historical Outline is a strikingly original work, the first real cultural history of India. The main features of the Indian character are traced back into remote antiquity as the natural outgrowth of historical process. Did the change from food gathering and the pastoral life to agriculture make new religions necessary? Why did the Indian cities vanish with hardly a trace and leave no memory? Who were the Aryans – if any? Why should Buddhism, Jainism, and so many other sects of the same type come into being at one time and in the same region? How could Buddhism spread over so large a part of Asia while dying out completely in the land of its origin? What caused the rise and collapse of the Magadhan empire; was the Gupta empire fundamentally different from its great predecessor, or just one more ‘oriental despotism’? These are some of the many questions handled with great insight, yet in the simplest terms, in this stimulating work. This book will be of interest to students of history, sociology, archaeology, anthropology, cultural studies, South Asian studies and ethnic studies.

Book Making India Great Again

Download or read book Making India Great Again written by Meeta Rajivlochan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can India become a great country once again, is the question explored in this book. In the past, India had significant achievements in science, technology, mathematics and business. A failure to build robust institutional networks of information and trust and indifference of the state to business communities, brought all that crashing down within a generation. Many of these historical patterns persist till today. The ability to create wealth has everything to do with such networks. There was never any shortage of innovation in India. What was lacking was the ability to learn from their own experience. The building of learning networks and a learning ecosystem that could be used by people to leverage success – this is what is needed to unlock the huge talent pool that India possesses. This book addresses young, educated and aspiring Indians in different walks of life who are interested in contemporary issues relating to nation, society and economy. It puts forward some solutions to the problems that India faces. It would be of interest to anyone who would like to know how history can teach us to re-write the Indian growth story and to re-build a great nation. The book could also be used as reading material for students of history, political science, public administration, business administration, in under-graduate and post-graduate classes. Please note: This title is co-published with Manohar Publishers, New Delhi. Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka

Download or read book Indian Subjects written by Brenda J. Child and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian Subjects: Hemispheric Perspectives on the History of Indigenous Education brings together an outstanding group of anthropology, history, law, education, literature, and Native studies scholars. This book addresses indigenous education throughout different regions and eras, predominantly within the twentieth century. Many of the contributors have tackled the boarding school experiences of their communities. The histories of these boarding schools, whether run by the federal government or religious orders, dominate academic and community views of indigenous education, and the lessons learned demonstrate the devastating impact of colonialism and assimilation efforts just as they document multiple Native responses. The lessons from these histories in the United States and Canada have been valuable, but provide a fairly narrow view of indigenous educational history. Indian Subjects pushes beyond that history toward hemispheric and even global conversations, fostering a critically neglected scholarly dialogue that has too often been limited by regional and national boundaries. --Provided by publisher.

Book The Politics of Cultural Knowledge

Download or read book The Politics of Cultural Knowledge written by Njoki Wane and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent and implementation of European colonialism have disrupted innumerable epistemological geographies around the globe. Countless cultural ways of knowing and local educational practices have in some way been displaced and dislocated within the universalizing project of the Euro-Colonial Empire. This book revisits the colonial relations of culture and education, questions various embedded imperial procedures and extricates the strategic offerings of local ways of knowing which resisted colonial imposition. The contributors of this collection are concerned with the ways in which colonial education forms the governing edict for local peoples. In The Politics of Cultural Knowledge, the authors offer an alternative reading of conventional discussions of culture and what counts as knowledge concerning race, class, gender, sexuality, identity, and difference in the context of the Diaspora.
