Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Georgia, Containing Brief Sketches of the Most Remarkable Events Up to the Present Day, (1784) This is a reprint, not a revision. The first volume of McCall's History was published in 1811, the second volume in 1816. Major McCall was nearly a man at the close of the Revolution, later a gallant officer in the regular army. He learned devotion to duty, and from a sense of duty combined with love of country, he wrote his History of Georgia while suffering constant and tormenting pain, and confined to a roller chair by his physical disabilities. Having served faithfully in the armies of his country, he did not want the record of what was truly its heroic period to be lost, and in so far as he could preserve that record, in spite of age and feebleness and pain, he did so. There are many curious phrases in the book, many familiar words the spelling of which does not look familiar. There are a number of statements not altogether accurate in detail. But I have made no changes. I prefer to give to our readers the work exactly as it came from Major McCall's hand, written at a time when a great many men who had been soldiers of the Revolution were yet in the prime of life. Notwithstanding its defects of punctuation, of grammar and of spelling, it is a work of intense interest to Georgians, and it is reproduced exactly as it was first printed ninety-eight years ago, (except that the two volumes are included in one,) with the idea that it will be helpful to the Georgians of this day to read of what the Georgians of that day did and suffered. Book excerpt: In August 1753, four colonists and their boat crew set out on a potentially dangerous passage of "discovery and observations" along Georgia's barrier islands from Savannah southward as far as the St. Johns River in Spanish-held Florida. Journal of a Visit to the Georgia Islands is a record of that trip, and although unsigned, internal evidence points directly to prominent Georgia entrepreneur Jonathan Bryan (1708-1788) as the author. His companions were the famous cartographer William G. De Brahm and South Carolina planters William Simmons and John Williamson. Traveling by day, hunting for food and camping on shore at night, the brave little band endured a battering by stormy seas and undoubtedly vicious attacks by nocturnal insects. However, the author was not deterred from appreciating the wilderness and its beauty. His comments on the waterways, the deplorable condition of coastal fortifications, and his assessment of the splendid timber resources and the fertile land for agriculture and for raising livestock make the document tantamount to a field report. As our only known legacy of the trip, this previously unpublished journal is unique in the annals of Georgia's colonial history.

Book excerpt: Spanning nearly a century, the letters in this collection revolve around a central event in the history of a southern family: the death of the eldest son owing to sickness contracted during service in the Confederate Army. The letters reveal a slaveowning family with keen interests in art, music, and nature and an unshakable belief in their religion and in the Confederate cause. William Seagrove Smith was a private in the signal corps of the Eighteenth Battalion, Georgia Infantry. Smith was part of the force defending Savannah until it fell in late 1864, and then marched with General William J. Hardee in his famous retreat out of the city and through the Carolinas. Like so many other soldiers on both sides of the conflict, William Smith fell not at the hands of an enemy but from disease. He died in Raleigh, North Carolina, on July 7, 1865. A parallel and complementary story about William's younger brother, Archibald, also emerges in the letters. As a cadet at Georgia Military Institute, Archibald was (as his parents fervently wished) exempt from service; however, he ultimately saw--and survived--action before the war's end. Scattered among the many lines in the letters that are devoted to the two brothers are a wealth of particulars about agricultural, industrial, and social life in the family's north Georgia community of Roswell, the Smith family's flight from Sherman's invasion force, their lives as refugees in south Georgia, and a final reunion of the Smith brothers outside of Savannah just after the city's fall. Also included are a number of moving exchanges between the Smiths and the family that cared for William in his final days. A brief history of the Smith family through 1863 begins the correspondence, while the letters following the war reveal their fortitude in the face of William's death and the hardships of Reconstruction. The volume concludes with selected letters from the subsequent generation of Smiths, who conjure images of the Old South and revive the memory of William. Like the most distinguished Civil War-era letter collections, The Death of a Confederate introduces a personal dimension to its story that is often lost in histories of this sweeping event.

Shaffer pursues a number of themes and establishes a connection between the historians' republican ideology, political concerns and outlook, and the precise ways in which they interpreted American history. He also includes an analysis of their background, education, profession, political persuasion, personal ambitions and circumstances, and attitudes toward the problem of union during the 1780s. The writings here offer unusual insights into the mind of the Revolutionary generation. The histories produced during the early national period represent the beginnings of a genre of writing new to America, one characterized by the subjugation of history to the service of nationalism. It is this element"nationalism"that gave this history its flavor, made possible its achievement, saddled it with difficulties, and, although unintentionally, produced a tone and emphasis different from that of the Enlightenment. The contribution of the Revolutionary generation of historians to the public identity represents an important aspect of the intellectual history of the early national period. With all their frequent vagueness and imprecision of formulation, almost incantatory repetitiousness, and patriotic sentimentality, the works of the first national generation of historians comprise a revealing effort to come to grips with the meaning of the Revolution and nationhood. This striving charted much of the course that American historiography was to travel thereafter.
