Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Franklin and Marshall College: Franklin College, 1787 1853; Marshall College, 1836 1853; Franklin and Marshall College, 1853 1903 In response to a request of the Alumni Association of Franklin and Marshall College the author has prepared the following pages. It seems strange that this work was not done many years ago, when the necessary material might have been more easily collected. Now that the historic renaissance has come upon us it is frequently in timated by the friends of the institution that the time for such a publication has fully come and that there must be no further delay. The preparation of this volume was directly suggested by the approaching Semi-centennial Celebration of the union of two colleges and of the consequent organization of Franklin and Marshall College, at Lancaster, Penn sylvania. For telling the story of the development of the educational movement which these institutions have represented this festival was regarded as a peculiarly auspicious occasion, and it was speedily determined that some one must write 'a book. Knowing that the task was accompanied by peculiar difficulties the present writer would have been well pleased if it had been assigned to another; but he was at last persuaded that he could not honorably decline an invitation which had been most courteously extended. In the earliest instructions of the Committee of Publi cation the author was reminded that he was expected to limit his studies to the history of the College, introducing that of the Theological Seminary at certain periods only. Benjamin Rush, who was largely responsible for the establishment of Franklin College in 1787, anticipated that it would promote the assimilation of Pennsylvania's Germanic population as contributing citizens of the new republic. The founders included four signers of the Declaration of Independence, three future governors of Pennsylvania, and four members of the Constitutional Convention. Named after Benjamin Franklin, its first benefactor, in 1853 Franklin College merged with Marshall College, which had been established by the German Reformed Church in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, in 1836. Marshall College bought the faculty and the constellation of intellectual values that guided Franklin & Marshall over the next half-century. This collection of photographs presents important parts of Franklin & Marshall's history: the evolution of the campus, the establishment of intercollegiate athletic teams and social fraternities, curricular innovations, U.S. Navy programs that kept the college alive during World War II, the decision to become coeducational, and the emergence of Franklin & Marshall as a national liberal arts college.

Citizens pleaded with government leaders to reorganize local infrastructures and heighten regulations, but economic turmoil, Native American warfare, and political unrest persisted. By 1784, one group of North Carolina frontiersmen could no longer stand the unresponsiveness of state leaders to their growing demands. This ambitious coalition of Tennessee Valley citizens declared their region independent from North Carolina, forming the state of Franklin. The Lost State of Franklin: America's First Secession chronicles the history of this ill-fated movement from its origins in the early settlement of East Tennessee to its eventual violent demise. Author Kevin T. Barksdale investigates how this lost state failed so ruinously, examining its history and tracing the development of its modern mythology. The Franklin independence movement emerged from the shared desires of a powerful group of landed elite, yeoman farmers, and country merchants. Over the course of four years they managed to develop a functioning state government, court system, and backcountry bureaucracy. Cloaking their motives in the rhetoric of the American Revolution, the Franklinites aimed to defend their land claims, expand their economy, and eradicate the area's Native American population. They sought admission into the union as America's fourteenth state, but their secession never garnered support from outside the Tennessee Valley. Confronted by Native American resistance and the opposition of the North Carolina government, the state of Franklin incited a firestorm of partisan and Indian violence. Despite a brief diplomatic flirtation with the nation of Spain during the state's final days, the state was never able to recover from the warfare, and Franklin collapsed in 1788. East Tennesseans now regard the lost state of Franklin as a symbol of rugged individualism and regional exceptionalism, but outside the region the movement has been largely forgotten. The Lost State of Franklin presents the complete history of this defiant secession and examines the formation of its romanticized local legacy. In reevaluating this complex political movement, Barksdale sheds light on a remarkable Appalachian insurrection and reminds readers of the extraordinary, fragile nature of America's young independence.

The Barelvī and Deobandī groups are two normative orientations/reform movements with beginnings in colonial South Asia. Almost two hundred years separate the beginnings of this polemic from the present. Its specter, however, continues to haunt the religious sensibilities of postcolonial South Asian Muslims in profound ways, both in the region and in diaspora communities around the world. Defending Muḥammad in Modernity challenges the commonplace tendency to view such moments of intra-Muslim contest through the prism of problematic yet powerful liberal secular binaries like legal/mystical, moderate/extremist, and reformist/traditionalist. Tareen argues that the Barelvī-Deobandī polemic was instead animated by what he calls “competing political theologies” that articulated—during a moment in Indian Muslim history marked by the loss and crisis of political sovereignty—contrasting visions of the normative relationship between divine sovereignty, prophetic charisma, and the practice of everyday life. Based on the close reading of previously unexplored print and manuscript sources in Arabic, Persian, and Urdu spanning the late eighteenth and the entirety of the nineteenth century, this book intervenes in and integrates the often-disparate fields of religious studies, Islamic studies, South Asian studies, critical secularism studies, and political theology.
