Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Dentistry in Cleveland, Ohio The writer has done considerable excavating in his time, and excavating dentistry from the newspapers and directories, from the first issue to the present time, has occupied all his odd hours for six years, but if it meets the approbation of the profession, he will feel amply rewarded. He has endeavored to bring about the articulation of past dentistry in Cleveland, with the present, believing that when empires have fallen and granite monuments crumbled, history will still exist. Many of the old times and things in dentistry savor now of romance, and as we look down the line of the past, a mellow enchantment is cast over them. The dental pioneers who practiced here labored under many disadvantages, but they blazed the way for the glorious oncoming of a great and numerous profession. The history of dentistry will lead the public to appreciate the importance of the science and art, and it puts dentistry on a higher plane than before; it is an up-lift that lifts-up. This volume does not contain every possible thing that could be found, but there is enough to show the trend of dentistry since its first introduction here. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ohio Dental Journal, 1895, Vol. 15 The entire credit of continuous gum work lies in two points: first, in taking it out at the proper temperature maintain an adaptation of the platinum, and the compensation for the effect the shrinkage would have on the palate in hard points upon which there was any shrinkage the adaptation must be altered a little bit. This can be done judiciously and without injury to the plate. Aside from this trouble and the trouble of repairing, that is, with the old furnace and the labor connected with making the fire, continuous gum work is a more certain work than any other that we have. It is certainly the highest type of mechanical den ture. It is more cleanly and it is durable. The tissues retain their health and the ridge retains its form under a platinum denture longer than any other plate. With the furnace Dr. Custer has introduced to this society, repair ing would be a matter of no consideration whatever. If a plate hap pened to fall and something broken off it can be easily restored. From the fact that there is no gas about it, there is no danger of free gas attacking the body. There need be no apprehension of that. I think the introduction of this into the laboratory of the dentist will revolution ize that department. It decreases the trouble arising from accidents if you break a tooth it does not have to go through the big coke furnace when you haven't time for it and don't get paid for it, for you can do it without loss of time. I think it is one of the grandest achievements that has been made in the profession recently, aud I think Dr. Custer deserves a great deal of credit for having solved this problem. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ohio Dental Journal, 1894, Vol. 14 He said, as long as children play and stone sidewalks are hard, so long will teeth occasionally be broken off. Sometimes a 'whole tooth is knocked out or broken off at the gum line, but more often a corner is just chipped. Again, the whole incising edge is snapped off far enough down to involve the pulp. What should be done in such cases? These accidents most often occur in childhood, so that we, as conscientious practitioners, must con sider what is best, not only to remedy the present disfigurement, but also to secure the best results for a lifetime. For these growing patients, the extirpation of the pulp, and placing a crown should be the last resort. Several cases in practice were then related. The conserva tive treatment of a pulp exposed through the fracture of a central incisor, is thus given With bibulous paper I removed the blood from the exposed portion of the pulp, bathing with a mild anti septic, and after thoroughly drying the fractured end of the tooth, including the exposed portion of the pulp, I flowed collo dion over the pulp, allowing it to extend to a short distance beyond the exposure. After this was dry I repeated the opera tion two or three times, then before the last coat was quite dry I covered the spot with a small piece of No. 4 gold foil. I repeated this operation with the collodion and gold foil several times; then being careful to remove all the collodion from the margins. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ohio Journal of Dental Science, 1888, Vol. 8 This kind of life, away from home and its kindly influences, was a new experience to him; he found an absence Of the home surroundings and the sympathy and affection he had SO fully enjoyed in his father's house. The treatment he received made the greater impression upon him from the fact that he had not a strong constitution and was Often Sick. Unfortunately his feeble condition was sometimes regarded as feigned, and because of this he was Often-times taxed much beyond his real strength. He had several severe illnesses, and in two or three instances he was supposed to be past recovery. After remaining in the Academy two years he engaged in teaching, but a few miles distant from the Academy. He was thus engaged for three or four years; a part of this time, however, he was engaged in the neighborhood of his father's home. In 1840 he entered a college at Ripley, Brown co., and remained about a year, leaving there in. 1841, returned to Greene Co., and there engaged in teaching and the study of medicine, in which he had the late Dr. Samuel Martin, of Xenia, for his preceptor, with whom he not only had superior instruction in medical science and practice, but also had there inculcated, in a receptive mind, the views of the dignity and importance of medical science and practice that have ever characterized him, from that time to the present. He practiced with and for his preceptor about one year; after which he removed to Bentonville, a small town in Fayette Indiana, where he soon established an excellent practice, especially for a. New country. Not being satisfied with his attain ments in medical science, he entered the Medical College of Ohio in 1846, and graduated in March, 1848. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ohio Dental Journal, 1900, Vol. 20 More recent investigations in histology of the dentin show that the tubuli are filled with a protoplasmic mass and I might say that this was long ago demonstrated by John Tomes of England, and this with many other discoveries gave him everlasting fame, and for which he received a knighthood. Another point in refer ence to these tubuli filled with the fluid, analysis of dentin shows. There is 10% of water only in the tooth substance, analysis also shows 25% 'of organic matter in the tubuli, if they were filled with fluid we would not have this large proportion of 2570 organic and 7570 of inorganic. I am only raising a doubt about the possibility of the existence of water. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Ohio State Journal of Dental Science 1885 Vol 5 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ohio State Journal of Dental Science, 1885, Vol. 5 While so many in the profession are deploring the decline of true prosthesis at the present time, very few. It would seem, truly understand the causes which led to it, or the means by which it mav again be restored to its former position in the estimation of the more intelligent men in the profession. And yet these causes are easily found. They exist in every dental workshop where vulcan ite and section teeth constitute any considerable portion of the business. And it was the invention and introduction of the latter which marks the decline of true dental prosthesis. With the invention of section teeth, the necessity for taste, skill and judgment on the part of the dentist, no longer existed. Or if it did, it could not longer be exercised. Why study expression, and nature's methods, when by no possibility, could those methods be followed? Whoever has observed the endless modifications which exist in the arrangement of the natural teeth, also the wonderful vari ety of expression, resulting from these modifications, has not failed to perceive that, to reproduce in artificial teeth, every shade and variety, which we behold in nature, must, of necessity, require long and careful study of the methods of arrangement.
