Book Tales of Calhoun County

Download or read book Tales of Calhoun County written by Terry Allen and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-05-18 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains five short stories about events that occurred in Calhoun County, Mississippi, during the 1960s. They paint a picture of rural Southern life as I experienced it in that time and place. These events became a part of the personal history of all who lived them. I wrote this book to ensure that this part of our history would not be lost or forgotten. Although some parts of the stories have been embellished and names changed, they are based on actual events. Remembering those simpler times and the good people who lived them brings a smile to my heart. I hope you have the same response as you read Tales of Calhoun County.

Book excerpt: Vardaman is a small town in Calhoun county in north central Mississippi, named after James K. Vardaman, the governor of the state when the town was organized in 1904. Vardaman made a big impression during his campaign speeches in that area and most of the residents were his firm supporters. The long-awaited railroad into the eastern part of Calhoun county was finally being built and it crossed one of the few main north-south roads in a wooded area a few miles south of the community of Ellzey. This is where the new town sprang up, and it killed Ellzey. Because James K. Vardaman was a hated foe of President Theodore Roosevelt, the Post Office Department refused to name the post office in the new town after Vardaman and, instead, called it Timberville. For 12 years, the residents of the town of Vardaman endured having a post office address different from the name of the town where they lived. The railroad which caused the town to form was torn up in 1939 after the virgin hardwood forests in the area had been harvested, the Great Depression had taken its toll, and improved highways began to make truck travel practical. The town struggled on through World War II and eventually become well-known, even famous, for the superb quality of sweet potatoes increasingly marketed from there. This book was written and complied from contemporary accounts and from the memories of living citizens. Detailed information about the surrounding communities from which the original settlers of Vardaman came and genealogical information about many of the local families makes this a useful reference for those with family roots in this area. The book also includes 162 photographs and the original obituaries of nearly 250 of the older area residents.

  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Calhoun County written by Kimberly O'Dell and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1998-09 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calhoun County has a diverse and unique history. Chief Ladiga and his Creek tribe first settled in the northeastern half of the county. By the early 1800s, settlers from Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina came to this scenic mountainous area to farm in the county's rich valleys. After the Treaty of Cusseta removed the Creeks west of the Mississippi in 1832, more settlers began arriving. In 1833, Benton County was incorporated into the state of Alabama and Jacksonville was made the county seat. Oxford, or "Lick-Skillet," was a frontier town at the time, and Piedmont, or "Cross Plains," was an intersection for the two stagecoach routes. By the time of the Civil War, the county would change its name to Calhoun County in honor of South Carolina statesman John C. Calhoun. In 1872, two northern industrialists, Samuel Noble and Gen. Daniel Tyler, created their "model city" in Anniston, which began a period of great growth in the county.

Book The Cherry Hill Poplar Springs Reid Community

Download or read book The Cherry Hill Poplar Springs Reid Community written by Monette Young and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monette Morgan Young wrote about the area she knew best, the northeast corner of Calhoun County, Mississippi, where she was born and reared. This area included the old communities of Cherry Hill and Reid with their focal point at the Poplar Springs Baptist Church. She blends her library and census data research with information from family Bibles and hours of discussions with older family members and the hundreds of letters she exchanged with far-flung distant cousins. To this she adds her own personal memories of growing up as a single child on a small isolated farm and the daily life there. Binding all this together is her narrative similar to sitting on her front porch with a glass of iced tea and listening to her tell about the times gone by and the people and how they lived. The book includes a census of the Poplar Springs cemetery conducted in 1985 by her cousin Clarence Morgan and his family and which has been annotated with genealogical information for many of the listings by Monette Young.
