In population to the square mile Brown stands fifth in the state, the counties averaging higher being Kenosha, Milwaukee, Racine and Winnebago. The total farm acreage is on which farms are located. Of these are owned and operated by the farmer himself, 2-46 are under lease, and 20 are owned by farmers who employ a manager to look after the property. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Brown County, Wisconsin, Past and Present, Vol. 2: Illustrated After arriving here mr.-wigman remained with Rev. Van den Broek until the end of July, 1849, during which time he was employed in teaching the ordinary branches of a common school as well as the catechism to the half breeds, Canadians and Indians. At this time coming in contact with the Indians. He learned their language and became well acquainted with their customs and mode of living. At the close of the school term July, 1849, Mr. Wigman wanted more out-door exercise. He left Father Van den Broek and engaged in farming _in Wrightstown where again, at the request of Father Van den Broek he occupied his leisure hours in teaching the Indians and half breeds and pre paring them for their first communion. Mr. Wigman continued in the occupation of farming and other manual labor until the year, 1854, when he entered a dry-goods and general store as clerk, which position he occupied for a little over two years, when he was induced to teach the public school in the town of Green Bay (now town of Scott). The town of Green Bay was then composed of the now towns of Scott, 'preble, Humboldt and Green Bay. While teaching school he entered upon the study of law under the direction of the late Judge Cotton and Hon. Timothy O. Howe. He also filled the offices of justice of the peace, town clerk, treasurer and assessor. Meanwhile he continued the study of law borrowing books for that purpose from the lawyers of Green Bay and practicing whenever opportunity offered itself before justice courts. His father having died in 1862 the following spring he made a visit to Holland to settle up his father's large estate. Many of his relations were living at that time. His father had, at first, intended to follow Mr. Wigman to the new world but later on reversed his plans and wanted his sons to return to him. Our subject, however, could not comply with this wish and so it happened that father and son never met again. CHAPTER XIX BROWN COUNTY IN THE CIVIL WAR The year 1860 and the one following--the first year of the great war--were spoken of at the time and afterwards as "the golden years." Industries along all lines were booming; large crops of wheat (both spring and winter) oats, barley, corn and peas were harvested in abundance and excellent profits realized. Brown county shared largely in the fat of the land and throughout her borders was peace and plenty. The grain elevator built by I. G. Beaumont and A. Pelton was finished at Green Bay, Hathaway and Penn, lessees, with an aggregate storage capacity of forty thousand bushels, and was found absolutely inadequate from the first to meet the required demand. The grain trade in 1860 promised to be larger than ever before. In preparation for the heavy shipments from the Green Bay port the New York Central placed two new screw steamers, Rocket and Comet on the Buffalo line, and these with the steamer Michigan made the tri-weekly trip with regularity. On the river the most important addition in transportation facilities was the Elwood belonging to D. M. Loy, De Pere, which carried ten thousand bushels of wheat at a speed of six miles an hour. The greatest crops of wheat ever raised in Wisconsin were during the years of 1861 and 1863, when the yield was respectively twenty to twenty-five million, and twenty-five to thirty million bushels. The price per bushel ranged from $1.75 to $2.00. On July 28, 1860, Portage City called a meeting to consider running a steamboat from Portage to Green Bay. A power of business organization intelligently directed, a faculty for recognizing every opportunity, a shrewd discrimination and a well balanced judgment have placed John Joseph Basten in the front ranks of the progressive men of New Franken. Starting out with no extraordinary advantages he has steadily pushed forward until he has attained a prosperity which is altogether unusual. He was born July 22, 1871, and is a son and grandson of Wisconsin pioneers. His grandparents, Frank and Margaret Basten, came from their native country of Germany at an early day and settled on a tract of wild land in Preble township, this county. This property Frank Basten set about improving and developing and built a rude log cabin, in which he resided for a number of years. He and his wife died upon the farm. The father of our subject, John Basten, was born in Prussia and came to the United States with his parents when he was only seven years of age. He grew to manhood upon the homestead and from his childhood took an active part in the arduous labor of clearing and developing the property.
