Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Bengali Literature: In the Nineteenth Century 1800-1825 To a mere literary taster; but even in this seemingly dullest period of our literary history, there is much more than is ever dreamt of in the philosophy of the airy generaliser who hurries over it to pastures more agreeable. It is the silent but strenuous efforts of the hosts of forgotten or half-forgotten writers, both foreign and native, of this and later periods that have built up the whole fabric upon which the present-day literature is based but it has always been the misfortune of the worthy pioneer authors to be kept in the background and looked upon as notable curio sities. It is time, however, when their records are fast vanishing and in a few years will be irretrievably lost, that we must hasten to estimate their work and worth, reconstruct their history, and give them their respective share of credit in the growth and progress of the national mind. Book Print and Publishing in Colonial Bengal

Download or read book Print and Publishing in Colonial Bengal written by Tapti Roy and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reconstructs the history of print and publishing in colonial Bengal by tracing the unexpected journey of Bharat Chandra’s Bidyasundar, the first book published by a Bengali entrepreneur. The introduction of printing technology by the British in Bengal expanded the scope of publication and consumption of books significantly. This book looks at the developments and the parallel publishing initiatives of that time. It examines local enterprises in colonial Bengal engaged in producing and selling books and explores the ways in which they charted out a cultural space in the 19th century. The work sheds fresh light on book production and the culture of print, and narrates the processes behind the printing of books to understand the multi-layered literary practices they sustained. A valuable addition to the history of publishing in India, this book will be useful to scholars and researchers of South Asian and Indian history, Bengali literature, media and cultural studies, and print and publishing studies. It will also appeal to those interested in the history of Bengal and the Bengali diaspora.

Book Writing Cultural History in Colonial and Postcolonial India

Download or read book Writing Cultural History in Colonial and Postcolonial India written by Henry Schwarz and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the colonial period in India, English historians portrayed the British conquest and domination of India as the realization of a historic destiny, absorbing the particular history of India into the overarching narrative of the Empire. When Indian scholars educated in the British system began to write their own histories of the period, they had to struggle to reclaim their past and to make the Indian people the subject of their history. Henry Schwarz explores this struggle through an analysis of Indian cultural histories written between 1870 and the present. Focusing on English-language texts written by Bengali historians on the subjects of literature and culture, Schwarz critically analyzes landmark works of the genre and compares Indian writing about cultural heritage to the dominant forms of European historiography prevalent during the colonial period. Indian historians incorporated European aesthetic standards and theories of history into their writing, yet they managed to transform these ideas in ways that challenged British ideological domination. Schwarz shows how, in writing a distinctly Indian history of India, they produced a unique historiographical style of great complexity deploying brilliant reconfigurations of the dominant themes, styles, ideologies, and tropes that characterize acceptable modes of history writing in the West. Moving from the late nineteenth century to the present, Schwarz identifies six distinct modes of translation and transformation produced by these writers, ranging from liberal-nationalist text to those of writers associated with the Subaltern Studies project. He analyzes the narrative modes employed during the period and traces the movement toward the metaphoric and ironic styles of the post-Independence era. Writing Cultural History in Colonial and Postcolonial India provides a needed counterweight to the emphasis on colonial discourse that has come to dominate recent postcolonial scholarship. By examining how the colonized interpreted and transformed the experience of oppression through their own work, this book represents postcolonial studies written from the other side.
