This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Production of Acala Cotton in the San Joaquin Valley of California Soils that will grow good crops of alfalfa and other deep-rooted field crops will grow good cotton. A medium-sandy loam is the ideal type, since it is more easily worked and absorbs and holds water better, though large yields have been obtained from sandy and heavy land. Cotton will stand a small amount Of alkali, but good crops are not to be expected from alkaline or hardpan soils. Where hardpan is less than 3 feet from the surface the roots do not develop normally, and water is required more frequently. On good land when the plants are well grown the bolls are larger and Open more widely, so that picking is easier, and the fiber is of better and more uniform quality. Some farmers have the idea that land which has been in alfalfa or pasture for several years should not be planted to cotton, because the cotton may grow too large and fail to open its bolls before frost. Although this sometimes oc curs on rich land with a high water-holding capacity, the highest yields of cotton in the San Joaquin Valley have usually been oh tained from fields previously in alfalfa or other leguminous crops. The use of cowpeas, vetches, and melilotus has increased rapidly in the last few years. Ordinarily, less water is required to grow a crop of cotton on rich alfalfa land; for this reason greater precaution is necessary in applying irrigation to avoid too luxuriant growth. Prior to then, the production of the crop was largely confined to restricted areas in the Pecos River Valley, in the south eastern corner of the State. The principal producing districts at present lie in the valley of the Rio Grande m Dona Ana County and in the Pecos Valley in the counties of Chaves and Eddy, with several smaller districts in other parts of the State. Book Classical Biological Control of Bemisia tabaci in the United States A Review of Interagency Research and Implementation

Download or read book Classical Biological Control of Bemisia tabaci in the United States A Review of Interagency Research and Implementation written by Juli Gould and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-03-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews interagency research and development of classical (importation) biological control of Bemisia tabaci (biotype B) conducted in the USA from 1992- 2002. The successful discovery, evaluation, release, and establishment of at least five exotic B. tabaci natural enemies in rapid response to the devastating infestations in the USA represents a landmark in interagency cooperation and coordination of multiple disciplines. The review covers all key aspects of the classical biocontrol program, beginning with foreign exploration and quarantine culture, through dev- opment of mass rearing methodology, laboratory and field evaluation for efficacy, to field releases, integration with other management approaches, and monitoring for establishment and potential non-target impacts. The importance of morphological and molecular taxonomy to the success of the program is also emphasized. The book’s contributors include 28 USDA, state department of agriculture, and univ- sity scientists who participated in various aspects of the project. Bemisia tabaci continues to be a pest of major concern in many parts of the world, especially since the recent spread of the Q biotype, so the publication of a review of the biological control program for the B biotype is especially timely. We anticipate that our review of the natural enemies that were evaluated and which have established in the USA will benefit researchers and IPM practitioners in other nations affected by B. tabaci.

  • Author : J. Apple
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book Integrated Pest Management written by J. Apple and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade is probably unparalleled as a period of dynamic changes in the crop protection sciences-entomology, plant pathology, and weed science. These changes have been stimulated by the broad-based concern for a quality environment, by the hazard of intensified pest damage to our food and fiber production systems, by the inadequacies and spiraling costs of conventional crop protection programs, by the toxicological hazards of unwise pesticide usage, and by the negative interactions of independent and often narrowly based crop protection practices. During this period, the return to ecological approaches in crop protection was widely accepted, first within entomology and ultimately within the other crop protection and related disciplines. Integrated pest management is fast becoming accepted as the rubric describing a crop pro tection system that integrates methodologies across all crop protection dis ciplines in a fashion that is compatible with the crop production system. Much has been written and spoken about "integrated control" and "pest management," but to date no treatise has been devoted to the concept of "in tegrated pest management" in the broadened context as described above. Most of the manuscripts in this volume were developed from papers presented in a symposium at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Ad vancement of Science held in San Francisco in February, 1974. In arranging that symposium, the editors involved plant pathologists, entomologists, and weed scientists.

Book Treatise on the Heathen Superstitions that Today Live Among the Indians Native to this New Spain 1629

Download or read book Treatise on the Heathen Superstitions that Today Live Among the Indians Native to this New Spain 1629 written by Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Treatise of Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón is one of the most important surviving documents of early colonial Mexico. It was written in 1629 as an aid to Roman Catholic churchmen in their efforts to root out the vestiges of pre-Columbian Aztec religious beliefs and practices. For the student of Aztec religion and culture is a valuable source of information. Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón was born in Taxco, Guerrero, Mexico, in the latter part of the sixteenth century. He attended the University of Mexico and later took holy orders. Sometime after he was assigned to the parish of Atenango, he began writing the Treatise for his fellow priests and church superiors to use as a guide in suppressing native "heresy." With great care and attention to detail Ruiz de Alarcón collected and recorded Aztec religious practices and incantations that had survived a century of Spanish domination (sometimes in his zeal extracting information from his informants through force and guile). He wrote down the incantations in Nahuatl and translated them into Spanish for his readers. He recorded rites for such everyday activities as woodcutting, traveling, hunting, fishing, farming, harvesting, fortune telling, lovemaking, and the curing of many diseases, from toothache to scorpion stings. Although Ruiz de Alarcón was scornful of native medical practices, we know now that in many aspects of medicine the Aztec curers were far ahead of their European counterparts.
