Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive account of the history and administration of land grants for education in the five states of the Northwest Territory. Beginning with the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, which set aside land for public education in the region, Knight traces the development and implementation of land grant policies through the 19th and early 20th centuries. His analysis sheds light on the challenges and opportunities that the land grant system presented for the development of education and agriculture in the region, and offers valuable insights into the history of American education more broadly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin of the Land Grant Act of 1862 (the So-Called Morrill Act), Vol. 4: And Some Account of Its Author, Jonathan B. Turner There is no desire to detract one iota from the credit due Mr. Morrill for his earnest, wise and persistent advocacy of the policy of Federal Aid to education. By his action on this subject he gained and deserved the name of statesman and his glory and reputation will wax with the passing years while that of many of his colleagues who were more prominent at the time will wane and pass away; because they did not recognize the really important things and he did. All honor to him for his early work and above all for his continued support of this policy once begun! On the other hand, the credit for having first devised and formulated the original plan and of having worked up the public interest in the measure so that it could be passed belongs clearly to Professor Turner and should be accorded him. Download or read book The Educational Significance of the Early Federal Land Ordinances Classic Reprint written by Howard Cromwell Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Educational Significance of the Early Federal Land Ordinances In 1774 Washington tried to form a company to develop the connection between the Potomac and Ohio rivers.3 At that time, the city of Baltimore Opposed the plan because it was feared that it would divert the western trade from Baltimore. Before this plan took any definite Shape the war began and the scheme was abandoned for about ten years. With the surrender of claims to the western lands by the various states, especially the Virginia land cession of March I, 1784, interest in Opening an easy path for travel from tide-water to the Ohio country was re vived. Two of the terms of this cession are of special importance.4 One is the provision that these lands Should be laid out into states, which Should be admitted to the Union on equal terms With the original states. The other is the provision which reserved land for the soldiers who had conquered the Northwest. Undoubtedly, both of these provisions had their in uence in the subsequent legislation with reference to the political development of the West and in the solution of the problem of paying the soldiers of the Revolution. The fundamental problem at this time, however, was an eco nomic one, in so far as the relation of the western country to the Union was concerned. It was generally felt that before any plan of political organization of the West could be put into Operation it was necessary to bind the back-country to the sea-board by economic ties. Certainly the national leaders were aware of this necessity. In the same month that Virginia ceded her west ern lands to the Union Jefferson and Washington were in cor respondence concerning the development of a water connection by way of the Potomac and Ohio rivers. Thus was Washing ton's plan of 1774 revived. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
