Book excerpt: Medieval Architecture of (undivided) India, both of the Sultanate (1192-1526 A.D.) and the Mughal Period (1526-1658 A.D.) had been greatly misinterpreted and misrepresented by the British of the East India (Trading) Company, as a matter of policy. It is only, much later, after the Independence (1947) that its study could be undertaken in the right earnest and the correct perspective. Architecture constitutes a veritable chronicle in stone. The stamp of an Age and a People - their tastes, beliefs, values, ideas, skills and achievements - everything that makes up a civilization, is most faithfully imprinted upon their monuments. Indo-Muslim Architecture is a fine art, as much as a source of Medieval Indian History and Culture and, as such, it must be conceived and studied as a discipline, without the romantic tales with which it has been hitherto associated. This work covers the fundamental aspects of the Historiographical Study of Indo-Muslim Architecture and ventures to theorise it and make it a perfect discipline.

Book excerpt: In the field of medieval Indian historiography, an eight-volume magnum opus, History of India as Told by Its Own Historians, by Sir Henry Myers Elliot (1808-53) and the editor-compiler of his posthumous papers, John Dowson (1820-81), was published from London between 1867 and 1877. These landmark volumes continue to retain their popularity even nearly hundred and fifty years later, and scholars still learn from and conduct their research on the basis of this work. However, an enterprise of this scale and magnitude was bound to suffer from some serious shortcomings. An eminent Indian scholar, S.H. Hodivala undertook the daunting task of annotating Elliot and Dowson’s volumes and worked through all the new material, selecting or criticizing and adding his own suggestions where previous comments did not exist or appeared unsuitable. The first volume of Hodivala’s annotated Studies, was published in 1939, while the second was published posthumously in 1957. Over the years, while the work of Elliot and Dowson has seen many reprints, and is even available online now, Hodivala’s volumes have receded into obscurity. A new edition is presented here for the first time. Hodivala also published critical commentaries on 238 of about 2000 entries included in another very famous work, Hobson-Jobson (London, 1886) by Sir Henry Yule (1820-89) and Arthur Coke Burnell (1840-82). These have also been included in the present edition. These volumes are thus aimed at serving as an indispensable compendium of both, Elliot and Dowson’s, and for Yule and Burnell’s excellent contributions of colonial scholarship. At the same time these would also serve as a guide for comparative studies and critical appreciation of historical texts. Originally, It Covered An Immense Mural Area 500 Yards In Length And 16 Yards In Height, By An Ingenious System Of Panelling Which, Besides Stylized Florals, Arabesques And Geometricals, Depicted Beautiful Figurative Compositions. Architect, Potter, Painter And Glazed-Tiler Collaborated On This Grand Project Which Has No Parallel In The World.Domeless Tomb With A Barahdari With Chaukhandi Roof Or A Plain Chabutarah Was Also A Unique Growth Of This Age And The Most Notable Tombs Of This Class, As Those Of Akbar, I Timad-Ud-Daulah And Jehangir, Have Been Studied In Detail. Development Of Such Distinctive Architectural Features As Dado , Gateway And Minar Also Belongs To This Period, During Which Unprecedented Emphasis Was Given On Ornamentation, Which Is Why This Art-Epoch Is Noted For Colour And Design . This Study Has Been Made In The Context Of, And With Reference To, The Cultural Milieu Which Produced It And This Is Not Only A History Of Jehangir S Architecture But Also A History Of Jehangir S Age And History Of Jehangir S India. It Is A History Of Those Tender Feelings, Sublime Thoughts And Subtle Ideas Which Go To Make A Civilization, Not Of Those Political Intrigues And Feuds, And Military Conflicts Which Destroy It.
