Book Histories of the Kings of Britain Classic Reprint

Download or read book Histories of the Kings of Britain Classic Reprint written by Geoffrey of Monmouth and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-19 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Histories of the Kings of Britain 1. The Beginnings of Arthurian Story - Arthurian romance is known to us in its best and purest form through the lays and romances that were produced in France during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. It is a body of preeminently imaginative literature, and although it reflects the chivalric life of France at the tune in which it was and mystery, of prowess, beauty, love, and enchantment, where valorous heroes achieve impossible adventures, and messengers from fairyland appear easily and naturally on marvellous errands. A brilliant part of our literary heritage from France, it does not, however, like the chansons de geste, the great Carolmgian epics, represent French national legend. It is a composite whole, which embodies Oriental stones, bits of classical myth, and above all Celtic tradition, - those "idle and pleasant tales of Britain," as they were called by a twelfth-century French poet, Jean Bodel, who justly gave to the Arthurian material the designation that has ever since clung to it, "the matter of Britain." In this material the central name, but not the most prominent figure, is that of Arthur, King of Britain, for Arthur himself in the romances is little more than a rot faineant, who remains in the background, while the true glory of adventure belongs to the knights whose proudest boast it is that they are attached to his court. Never could his name have become so potent, if he had not earlier tradition been accredited with more valiant deeds than he accomplishes in romance. It is not in the romances alone, however, that Arthurian story is recorded, and such light as we have upon Arthur's early fame is shed from literature of a different class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of King Richard the Third of England King richard the third, known com mouly in history as Richard the Usurper, was perhaps as bad a man as the principle of hered itary sovereignty ever raised to the throne, or perhaps it should rather be said, as the principle of hereditary sovereignty ever made. There is no evidence that his natural disposition was marked with any peculiar depravity. He was made reckless, unscrupulous, and cruel by the influences which surrounded him, and the cir cumstances in which he lived, and by being habituated to believe, from his earliest child hood, that the family to which he belonged were born to live in luxury and splendor, and to reign, while the millions that formed the great mass of the community were created only to toil and to obey. The manner in which the principles of pride, ambition, and desperate love of power, which were instilled into his mind in his earliest years, brought forth in the end their. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of Henry the Fifth, King of England The three several memoirs of Henry the Fifth, King of England, printed in the present Volume, for the first time, are in themselves sufficiently valuable and interesting to deserve some attention at the hands of the future historian; while an additional interest, perhaps, is lent to them by the juxtaposition in which they are placed. Though professing to give an account of the actions, motives, and career of the same personage, they do so from wholly different points of view; and they respectively reveal to us the character of one of the most popular monarchs in English History, under aspects so widely dissimilar, that it is almost with difficulty - so far, at all events, as the first and third of these works are concerned - an uninformed or superficial reader would recognize in them the portrait of one and the same individual. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of King James II of England When once a character has become historical, it is usually studied in no other light than that of history. Yet it may have been chiefly remarkable for characteristics other than historical, and, in some cases, its personality cannot be rightly understood or judged solely from the part it played in historical events. Most readers of English history have decided that James II. was a failure, many of them that he was a fanatic, and not a few that he was a fool; such decisions having been mainly founded upon his actions as a King; that is to say upon his doings during little more than two of the sixty-eight years of his life. Book The Kings and Queens of Scotland Classic Histories Series

Download or read book The Kings and Queens of Scotland Classic Histories Series written by Richard Oram and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-09-16 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the Scottish monarchy is a long tale of triumph over adversity, characterised by the personal achievements of remarkable rulers who transformed their fragile kingdom into the master of northern Britain. The Kings and Queens of Scotland charts that process, from the earliest Scots and Pictish kings of around ad 400 through to the union of parliaments in 1707, tracing it through the lives of the men and women whose ambitions drove it forward on the often rocky path from its semi-mythical foundations to its integration into the Stewart kingdom of Great Britain. It is a route waymarked with such towering personalities as Macbeth, Robert the Bruce and Mary Queen of Scots, but directed also by a host of less well-known figures such as David I, who extended his kingdom almost to the gates of York, and James IV, builder of the finest navy in northern Europe. Their will and ambition, successes and failures not only shaped modern Scotland, but have left their mark throughout the British Isles and the wider world.
