It unravels the development and ramifications of Bengali drama by juxtaposing it with the popular culture of the region. The paper puts an emphasis on the regional paradigm of drama by interlacing 'orient' and 'occident' influences. It prioritizes and discerns two-fold model of Bengali drama that is hitherto not emphasised by the scholars. The first segment was the nascent stage of Bengali drama. It explains the development of Bengali drama at the intersection of Greek and Sanskrit influences. The second section was the stage of maturation of Bengali drama. It explicates the amalgam of English and Russian influences for the formation of a new style of drama in Bengal. The paper unfolds the project of internatiolization and scientific modification of a regional art.

Book excerpt: This book traces a significant shift in 20th century Irish theatre from the largely national plays produced in Dublin to a more expansive international art form. Confirmed by the recent success outside of Ireland of the "third wave" of Irish playwrights writing in the 1990s, the new Irish drama has encouraged critics to reconsider both the early national theatre and the dramatic tradition it fostered. On the occasion of the centenary of the first professional production of the Irish Literary Theatre, the contributors to this volume investigate contemporary Irish drama's aesthetic features and socio-political commitments and re-read the plays produced earlier in the century. Although these essayists cover a wide range of topics, from the productions and objectives of the Abbey Theatre's first rivals to mid-century theatre festivals, to plays about the "Troubles" in the North, they all reassess the oppositions so commonplace in critical discussions of Irish drama: nationalism vs. internationalism, high vs. low culture, urban experience vs. rural or peasant life. A Century of Irish Drama includes essays on such figures as W. B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, J. M. Synge, Sean O'Casey, Brendan Behan, Samuel Beckett, Marina Carr, Brian Friel, Frank McGuinness, Christina Read, Martin McDonagh, and many more. Book excerpt: Abstract: Over the past decade, reality television has become one of the most popular television genres. Documentary theatre occupies a similar niche within this viewer climate. Composed principally of primary source information, documentary theatre claims to possess more historical validity than other forms of historical drama, which employs original dialogue and allows more flexibility with chronological order with the aim of heightening the dramatic tension. The purpose of this thesis is to explore whether documentary theatre functions as history, or if it surrenders that validity by virtue of it being in a dramatic rather than a scholarly form. By focusing on how the genre appropriates the methodologies and techniques in the creation and execution of history and drama, the tensions that give documentary dramas power beyond that of tragedy are revealed. Dramatists such as Moisés Kaufman, Anna Deavere Smith and Emily Mann make use of several techniques employed by historians, from a sensitive gathering of primary source material, contextualizing the information within a certain frame, and constructing a thorough narrative of an event. However, they are dramatists by trade, and as such are interested not in creating historical documents but viable stage plays. Thus, their docudramas also make use of dramatic techniques, particularly those of tragedy. The documentary theatre, then, functions both as drama and history, and the interplay of those two forces.

Book excerpt: This edited collection reconnects the literary imagination to the early modern cognitive environment. Under the spell of post-romantic aesthetics, modernist criticism regarded the imagination as an autonomous driver of artistic production and severed its dense ties to the image, reducing the latter to a formalistic category emptied of psychological significance. But early modern writers and thinkers did not hold such views. They understood the literary image to issue from the embodied mental faculties of the author and, through its rhetorical inscription, to influence, in turn, the interiority of the reader. For both authors and readers, then, engaging with images was not a detached aesthetic experience; it was a psycho-physiological struggle fraught with ethical peril insofar as the imagination was known for its volatility and unruliness, susceptible to the dysfunction brought on by disease and bearing, at times, in Protestant England the taint of superstition and idolatry. This volume accordingly investigates the imagination’s alliances, altercations, and betrayals with rival cognitive operations based upon premodern faculty psychology.

In Political Adaptation in Canadian Theatre Kailin Wright investigates adaptations that retell popular stories with a political purpose and examines how they acknowledge diverse realities and transform our past. Political Adaptation in Canadian Theatre explores adaptations of Canadian history, Shakespeare, Greek mythologies, and Indigenous history by playwrights who identify as English-Canadian, African-Canadian, French-Canadian, French, Kuna Rappahannock, and Delaware from the Six Nations. Along with new considerations of the activist potential of popular Canadian theatre, this book outlines eight strategies that adaptors employ to challenge conceptions of what it means to be Indigenous, Black, queer, or female. Recent cancellations of theatre productions whose creators borrowed elements from minority cultures demonstrate the need for a distinction between political adaptation and cultural appropriation. Wright builds on Linda Hutcheon's definition of adaptation as repetition with difference and applies identification theory to illustrate how political adaptation at once underlines and undermines its canonical source.
