Download or read book Henry Pilcher s Sons Opus List and Historical Sketch written by Bynum Petty and published by LULU. This book was released on 2014-10-20 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Pilcher constructed his first pipe organ in Dover, England, in 1820. Over a period of almost 125 years, four generations of family members-working first in England and then in the United States-built Henry Pilcher's Sons Organ Company into a business known for its high manufacturing standards. The institution they created placed organs throughout the United States and only saw its end with the outbreak of World War II. This reference volume, rich with previously undiscovered source material, presents a historical synopsis of the family business. Also included is the opus list of Pilcher organs, arranged both chronologically and by region, and published here for the first time. A vital source for Pilcher organ historians and admirers, this volume offers useful data for anyone seeking historical background or information on specific Pilcher organs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the life of one of the most remarkable and neglected pioneers of the modern protestant missionary movement. Jacob Grigg was a young Cornishman who, inspired by his contemporary William Carey, was the first English missionary to volunteer for Africa. His career was a chequered one. Expelled by the Governor of Sierra Leone, he emigrated to the newly-free United States of America. There he became renowned for his ability as a preacher, evangelist and theological thinker. An emancipationist and committed to worldwide evangelism, he suffered for his views. Workloads led to alcoholic addiction which he conquered. This is the first biography of a remarkable man who died nearly two centuries ago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion is viewed here as the great cultural force which introduced and preserved civilization in the era of westward expansion from 1776 to the eve of the Civil War. In this first major study of religion in the South, Mr. Posey surveys the work of the seven chief denominations—Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Disciples of Christ, Cumberland Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, and Protestant Episcopal—as they developed in the frontier region that now comprises the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri. The great challenges faced by the churches, Mr. Posey believes, were, first, the barbarism continually threatening a people isolated in a savage wilderness and, second, the materialism likely to engross minds preoccupied with the hard necessities of frontier survival. Many frontiersmen who had wandered across the mountains to escape the trammels and restrictions of an established society were distrustful of traditional religion, and some forgot their inherited beliefs entirely. To overcome these attitudes demanded new approaches. As organizations the churches faced great obstacles in attempting to minister to the folk on the moving frontier. One early answer was the camp meeting, and many of its features—an emphasis upon fervid emotion and individualism and the active participation and use of untrained people in religious services—continued as dominant elements in frontier religion. Indeed, those churches flexible enough to make use of these appeals were the most successful in spreading their beliefs. But inherent in the emotion and individualism was the danger of fragmentation, a danger most tragically evident when the slavery controversy split most southern denominations from their northern brethren. In education the churches fared better; even those that were at first skeptical of its benefits were by the time of the Civil War actively engaged in its support. But overall, the southern churches were hampered by too little money for the support of priests and preachers, too little communication between isolated congregations, and too little regard for service to the community. At the center of the churches' work—the care of congregations, the missions to the Indians and the Negroes, and the founding of educational institutions—were the frontier ministers. Mr. Posey pictures these men—stern and hard but full of zeal—as performing a stupendous task in their efforts to build and maintain spiritual life on the southern frontier.

Book Baptists and Worship

Download or read book Baptists and Worship written by R. Scott Connell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worship is dialogue. It is more than that, but it is not less than that. The way Baptists have worshiped for three and a half centuries demonstrates this consistently, in spite of their penchant for freedom and autonomy. No one tells Baptists how to order their worship services. They don’t have a common liturgy that they must follow, and yet their services look remarkably similar. This is largely due to two controlling factors in their worship: The Bible that they embrace as inspired, inerrant, authoritative, and sufficient; and the Christ-revealing gospel that is contained within its pages. When the word of God is followed closely, a shape for worship order begins to emerge. It is the same “gospel-shape” that is found throughout the Bible. When the word of God is applied to a worship service in which God and his people are engaged in a worship conversation, a consistent contour of gospel elements and content begins to emerge that reveals the glory of the Christ we gather to worship. He is so glorious that when we behold him, we are transformed into the same image from one degree to another. This is the power of corporate worship (2 Cor 3).
