Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Black Adonis Could they have done anything else than live in connubial felicity, after the man had proved himself so noble and the woman had learned to appreciate him at his true worth? Well, whether they could or not, they didn't. Blanche is the happiest of wedded wives. She still holds to her theory that marriage is based on wrong principles, and that the contract as ordinarily made is {rightfully immoral but she says if all men were like her Jules there would be no trouble. In this she proves herself essentially feminine. She is learning, albeit a little late, that man was not made to live alone, and that the love a mother feels for her child is not the only one that brings joy to a woman's breast. Angel Hill is a loner, mostly disregarded by her peers as a goody-goody. Her father is dying, and her family’s financial situation is in turmoil. Though they’ve attended the same schools, Isaiah never noticed Angel as anything but a dorky, Bible toting church girl. Then their English teacher offers them a job on her mobile library, a three-wheel, two-seater bike. Angel can’t turn down the money and Isaiah is soon eager to be in such close quarters with Angel every afternoon. But life changes on May 31, 1921 when a vicious white mob storms the Black community of Greenwood, leaving the town destroyed and thousands of residents displaced. Only then, Isaiah, Angel, and their peers realize who their real enemies are.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Immediate Jewel of His Soul: A Romance In the wide sense there are three points of view from which novelists may write: the bizarre, the real and the ideal. He may portray life in caricature to produce laughter; he may depict it as it is or is likely to occur; and he may exhibit it as it should be. This romance abandons caricature; it adheres strictly to the problems that actually face us now. As its philosophy is realistic idealism, it sets forth some of our immediate aspirations and ideals. It is a story of the earnest Negro, trying to rise unto great place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Entailed Hat Or Patty Cannon s Times

Download or read book The Entailed Hat Or Patty Cannon s Times written by George Alfred Townsend and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Better known as a journalist and correspondent during the American Civil War, George Alfred Townsend was also an author of fiction. Townsend combined the two, fiction and journalism, in The Entailed Hat, or Patty Cannon's Times: A Romance. This novel provides readers with an account of the life and crimes of Martha "Patty" Cannon. Patty Cannon was a criminal leader who lived in the Delmarva Peninsula region of the United States. The gang that she led was responsible for the kidnapping and sale of slaves and free blacks from the area to plantation owners in the South. Told from the perspective of a newsman decades after the crimes were committed, the story is a semi-fictionalized account of Cannon's crimes and the racial prejudice that made them possible. It is a tragic story of the failure of humanity that includes a romantic storyline. While the historical accuracy of Townsend's book is unproven, it remains one of the most detailed accounts of this period in history. Townsend was a gifted writer, and the author brings his experience as a war correspondent to this book. While presented as a novel, the book is ripe with factual details. Townsend builds an engaging romance story to further the narrative, but remains always focused on the terrible actions of Patty Cannon and her gang of criminals. As both a fictionalized story of romance and an account of a dark period in history, The Entailed Hat, or Patty Cannon's Times is a fascinating read. The historical significance of the subject matter makes Townsend's novel affecting in a way few novels are and readers interested in a novel rooted in truth will find this to be a highly engrossing book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birthright: A Novel It was a faint, pungent smell that played in the back of his nose and somehow reminded him of his mother, Caroline Siner, a thick-bodied black woman whom he remembered as always bending over a wash-tub. This was only one unit of a complex. The odor was also connected with negro protracted meetings in Hooker's Bend, and the Harvard man remembered a lanky black preacher waving long arms and wailing of hell-fire, to the chanted groans of his dark congregation; and he, Peter Siner, had groaned with the others. Peter had known this odor in the press-room of Tennessee cotton gins, over a river packet's boilers, where he and other roustabouts were bedded, in bunk-houses in the woods. It also recalled a certain octoroon girl named Ida May, and an intimacy with her which it still moved and sad dened Peter to think of. Indeed, it resurrected in numerable vignettes of his life in the negro village in Hooker's Bend; it was linked with innumerable emo tions, this pungent, unforgetable odor that filled the Jim Crow car. He withdrew his finger slowly from his ear, and sat motionless in the water with his eyes still shut, his hand still poised beside his head, his finger still extended in the manner of a speaker about to make a vigorous affirmative gesture. Gradually he relaxed. His face lost its tight, um natural lines, his eyes blinked wide Open, and he dropped his hand slowly into the tub.
