Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Patterns of Western Spruce Budworm and Douglas-Fir Tussock Moth Outbreaks in the Northern Blue Mountains, Oregon, Since A. D. 1700 The objectives of this study were to reconstruct and analyze a multicentury history of budworm and tussock moth outbreaks in old-growth mixed-conifer stands of the north ern Blue Mountains and Eagle Cap edemess in northeastern Oregon. We were par ticularly interested in assessing possible changes in outbreak dynamics in the 2oth century relative to previous centuries. Our starting point for this study was observa tions of radial growth responses to defoliation by these two insects in previous tree ring studies conducted within the region (brubaker 1978; Brubaker and Greene 1979; Vcman 1980, From this work it was evident that characteristic tree-ring pat terns (hereafter called signatures) caused by budworms and tussock moths might be detected and isolated in radial increment time series. Following this lead, we applied dendrochronological methods developed and demonstrated in the southern Rocky Mountains (swetnam and others 1985; Swetnam and Lynch 1989, 1993) to tree-ring collections from the Blue Mountains. In this paper, we describe the results of our investigations in the northern Blue Mountains; we focused primarily on the historical patterns of change in regional-scale outbreaks among all sampled stands. Book Major Outbreaks of the Douglas fir Tussock Moth in Oregon and California

Download or read book Major Outbreaks of the Douglas fir Tussock Moth in Oregon and California written by Boyd E. Wickman and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Case histories of five tussock moth outbreaks that occurred in California and Oregon between 1935 and 1965 are discussed. Information is given on the size and duration of the outbreaks, the presence of natural control agents and the damage caused. Most of the outbreaks were eventually treated with DDT. However, enough information was available from untreated portions to show the probable trend of natural events in the absence of direct control. Repeated patterns observed in each of the outbreaks enabled certain generalizations to be made about natural population behavior and tree impact. All infestations followed a 3-year cycle with inconspicuous to minimal defoliation the first year, severe foliage loss the second year, and ultimate collapse of the population by the end of the third year. The most severe tree damage occurred in the second year. Additional loss of foliage before population collapse in the third year was usually of minor importance in terms of total impact. Although other natural factors were involved, a virus disease appeared to be the principal cause of insect mortality during collapse.

Book Sampling Populations of Western Spruce Budworm and Predicting Defoliation on Douglas Fir in Eastern Oregon Classic Reprint

Carolin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sampling Populations of Western Spruce Budworm and Predicting Defoliation on Douglas-Fir in Eastern Oregon A cluster design appeared to be the best solution for sampling these stages. For low, medium, and high populations, number and size of clusters per stand and number of stands were determined for means with an acceptable sampling error of 20 percent, at p z 0. 05, and also other precision and confidence levels. Sampling requirements were particularly great for low egg populations and medium populations of larvae in buds. Book A Case Study of a Douglas fir Tussock Moth Outbreak and Stand Conditions 10 Years Later

Download or read book A Case Study of a Douglas fir Tussock Moth Outbreak and Stand Conditions 10 Years Later written by Boyd E. Wickman and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tree damage occurring immediately after an outbreak of Douglas-fir tussock moth, Orgyia Pseudotsugata McD., and stand conditions 10 years later are described. Because of increased radial growth and ingrowth in the 10-year postoutbreak period, good evidence indicates that tree damage caused by the tussock moth may not be as severe in the overall stand dynamics as previously pictured. The insect probably plays a key role as a phytophagous regulator of primary production in some second-growth white fir stands in California and elsewhere.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impact of the Douglas-Fir Tussock Moth on Forest Recreation in the Blue Mountains A survey of recreationists, resort owners, packer-guides, motel operators, and employees of natural resource agencies revealed little evidence that a recent outbreak of Douglas-fir tussock moth had significant or widespread influence on recreation in northeastern Oregon. Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outbreaks of the Western Spruce Budworm in the American Northern Rocky Mountain Area From 1922 Through 1971 Research on the western spruce budworm in recent years has been concerned chiefly with its population dynamics, behavior, genetic characteristics, and chemical control. Few investigations have been directed specifically to its relationship with its host tree species or to the patterns of its outbreaks. Such studies must ultimately be made. Fortunately, much basic information useful for these studies exists in numerous reports that document details of the chronology, geographic distribution, and general severity of many of the budworm outbreaks in the two Forest Service Regions. The general purpose here is to review this information (mostly unpublished) as a background for continuing biological and ecological studies of this important forest insect pest and as an appropriate reference for investigations into its epidemiology. Specifically, our intent here is to (1) consolidate, summarize, and present information about the location, host types, duration, effects, and measures for control applied in past outbreaks; (2) discuss factors thrt appear to relate to the location, duration, and probable effect of budworm outbreaks in the the Regions; and (3) identify problems for further study to more accurately assess the impact possibilities of outbreaks of the budworm in host forests managed for specific uses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radial Growth in Grand Fir and Douglas-Fir Related to Defoliation by the Douglas-Fir Tussock Moth in the Blue Mountains Outbreak A recent extensive outbreak in the Blue Mountains of Oregon and washington offered the opportunity to study tree damage resulting from defoliation by extremely dense populations of dftm. The objective of studies begun in 1972 was to use defoliation intensity in 1972 and 1973 as a predictor of tree damage during and after the outbreak. Two important forms of damage, tree mortality and top - kill, have already been summarized from this study (wickman l978a). The three forms of damage have also been mathematically represented in the dftm outbreak model (overton and Colbert This paper summarizes the effects of defoliation on radial growth during and immediately after the outbreak.
